Adaptogen coffee is a clever combination of traditional coffee and plant-based adaptogen, which are perfect for busy lifestyles. The idea is simple: you get all the benefits of your morning caffeine fix, including increased alertness and sharper focus, while minimising side effects like nervousness, anxiety, or the dreaded energy crash later in the day. London Nootropics offer three unique blends to choose from Flow for mental clarity, Zen for calm focus, and Mojo, which includes Cordyceps mushroom to support stamina and energy production. Think of it as everything you love about your regular brew without some of the nastier side effects. What do adaptogens do for you? Adaptogens are naturally occurring herbs, mushrooms, and roots that are thought to help the body respond better to physical and emotional stress. They work by supporting your adrenal system and helping to regulate hormones like cortisol (the hormone responsible for spikes in our stress levels). Many people turn to adaptogens as a natural way to improve focus, reduce anxiety, and support balanced energy levels. In London Nootropics blends, adaptogens like ashwagandha and reishi mushroom help counteract some of coffee's less desirable side effects, such as jitters or mid-afternoon crashes. These blends have been designed to leave you alert yet calm, without the crash after. Is adaptogen coffee good for you? Many fans swear by adaptogen coffee as a gentler, more nourishing way to enjoy their daily brew. While research is ongoing, several adaptogens used in these blends, like ashwagandha and lion's mane, have been linked to stress reduction, better concentration, and enhanced physical performance. By combining these adaptogens with high-quality coffee, London Nootropics offers a functional drink designed to lift your mood and focus without the crash. What's the difference between adaptogens and nootropics? Both adaptogens and nootropics are natural substances known for supporting mental performance and well-being, but they work differently. Adaptogens help your body manage stress, stabilise hormone levels, and maintain balance. While nootropics directly support brain function, they can help improve memory, creativity, and motivation. While a mixture of both is necessary, for coffee drinkers who know that one strong cup might knock them off balance, reaching for a drink like London Nootropics that supports balance is key.

Is adaptogenic coffee the wellness upgrade YOU need? Our team put it to the test - here's what they really thought

If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission - learn more Have you ever drunk a third coffee by mid-morning only to crash hours later, buzzing and questioning whether the jittery high was worth it? Caffeine is best known for boosting alertness, but it also infamously spikes cortisol, the body's stress hormone, which can leave us feeling more frazzled than focused. Enter: adaptogenic coffee, the wellness trend that claims to give you the boost without the burnout. Packed with functional mushrooms and herbs, this new wave of brews promises energy and calm in one cup. To find out if it's all hype or actually helpful, we challenged our shopping team to swap their usual flat whites and cold brews for adaptogenic coffee brand London Nootropics for one full week. With blends from the brand costing as little as £0.67 per cup, which is far cheaper than your daily Starbucks, could this be the smarter way to start your day? Here's what we discovered. Layla Turner - Commerce Writer and Content Creator I've not drank an actual coffee in over a year since I made the switch to matcha, a decision I made to combat caffeine-induced anxiety. I've been curious about mushroom coffee for some time, as I often miss the taste of my daily brew - but would it really be possible to cure my cravings without the unwanted effects? Mojo Coffee from London Nootropics contains only six per cent roasted coffee, alongside Siberian ginseng, and, you guessed it cordyceps (you know, the things on The Last Of Us that take over the world). The Mojo blend is earthier (a side effect of the cordyceps) than what I'm used to, and has a slight bitterness to it, though when I stirred in a cheeky half spoon of honey, it certainly hit the spot. The moment of truth for me would be if I experienced any post-caffeine anxiety, and I'm pleased to say, the jitters never came. I'm not sure I felt as energised as I normally would after a proper cup of joe, but if you're looking for an alternative for dealing with the post-lunch slump, I found this made me feel more alert and able to focus more easily. For me, I'd give it a 7/10 for 6.5/10 for taste, and a 7.9/10 for energy. Lydia Wheatley - Senior Commerce Writer As an avid coffee drinker, I was super excited to try out these adaptogenic coffee s, especially if it meant getting some extra perks from the pretty intriguing ingredients list. Hoping to get an energy boost to help me tackle my daily workload, I opted to try out Flow – a focus and clarity-enhancing coffee made with Hifas da Terra Lion's Mane mushroom and Rhodiolife® Rhodiola Rosea. Having tried 'enhanced' coffees in the past and finding the flavour distasteful (muddy and tart), I was pleasantly surprised to find that this one simply tasted of, well, coffee. The contents of the coffee sachet looked, smelled and tasted like your run-of-the-mill 'soluble' coffee, which I found pleasant as a black coffee drinker, and while it doesn't quite match up taste-wise to my daily drip, it certainly had me feeling more enhanced. Drinking a mug at around 2pm, I found myself feeling more awake, switched on and mentally willing to work within half an hour. Where I would usually be struggling with an afternoon slump, I was instead left feeling far more focused and able to string sentences together. I'll definitely try this coffee again when I need to really buckle down. It's quick and easy to make, tastes good, and gives me a bigger, better boost than my mug of drip ever has. Danielle Amato - Lifestyle and Consumer Reviews Writer I have a twice-daily coffee habit, and while I enjoy the taste, it doesn't always make me feel great. I swapped my usual coffee with London nootropics to see if it made any difference. The three flavours I tried included Zen with Ashwagandha, Mojo with cordyceps and Flow with Lion's Mane. While I can't say I noticed any specific benefits after testing, I did genuinely feel less sluggish than usual. Surprisingly, I preferred it to my usual instant coffee (Nescafe Azera) and found it to be super smooth and easy to dissolve. It wasn't bitter or harsh, and I could enjoy it without milk. There was also no mushroom taste whatsoever. While I'll never ditch my espresso machine, I would consider swapping out my usual instant with London Nootropics.

Nutrition expert says mushroom coffee offers an energy boost 'without the crash'

Coffee is a staple for many, serving as a comforting warm beverage on dreary days or a cool refreshment when the sun's out. It's our go-to pick-me-up to power through the workday. Research has highlighted the numerous perks of coffee consumption, but there's a catch: the dreaded caffeine crash that often strikes in the afternoon. To combat this, we might reach for another cup, which can interfere with our sleep patterns and cause sleep deprivation. But there's good news for those looking for an alternative - mushroom coffees like DIRTEA offer a promise of sustained energy without the crash and a host of other advantages. DIRTEA's concoction melds 100% Arabica beans with Lion's Mane mushroom (1,000 mg) and a suite of B vitamins, including B6, B12, Pantothenic acid, and Folic acid, reports Wales Online. While its nutritional profile is noteworthy, what truly distinguishes it? We turned to nutrition expert Clarissa Bell for her insights on the mushroom coffee brand. Bell shared her thoughts: "What sets DIRTEA's Coffee Superblend apart is the powerful combination of organic arabica coffee with functional mushrooms, adaptogens and essential nutrients, all carefully chosen to elevate energy, focus and resilience." Lion's Mane, a functional mushroom celebrated for its cognitive perks, is at the heart of this innovative coffee blend. It's touted to enhance mental clarity, memory, and focus, positioning it as an ideal kick-starter for your day. Similar to caffeine, Lion's Mane is a nootropic known for boosting brain function. Combining it with caffeine is said to amplify its effects. Clarissa delves into the additional components: "The blend also includes two well-known adaptogens, ashwagandha and Maca. Adaptogens help the body manage stress more effectively; in this case, they balance out the stimulating effects of coffee." She further details the benefits of each ingredient: "Ashwagandha promotes steady energy levels and can soften the post-caffeine energy crash, while Maca supports cognition, mood and stamina. On top of all this, DIRTEA coffee is enriched with organic B vitamins that support natural energy metabolism, providing your body with resources to keep you energised all day long." Of course, they aren't the only adaptogenic coffee on the market. London Nootropics is another popular option, containing Hifas da Terra lion's mane, cordyceps, and chaga mushroom extracts. They offer a five-star rated starter bundle for £40. Otherwise, Amazon sells Javasu mushroom coffee, which contains lion's Mane, chaga, cordyceps, and L-theanine. So far, shoppers have rated it 4.2 out of five. A 150g box costs £36. Clarissa said: "Many people find that switching to DIRTEA coffee delivers a noticeable shift in how they feel, starting with more sustained, balanced energy levels and sharper mental clarity. Many people report feeling more alert and productive, without the common side effects of caffeine like jitters, crashes or anxious energy." She went on to discuss the health benefits of DIRTEA's mushroom beverages: "Beyond coffee, DIRTEA's functional mushroom range offers targeted support for a range of health goals. Chaga is exceptionally rich in antioxidants and supports immunity, digestion and skin health. "Reishi is known for its calming effects, helping to regulate the stress response and promote deeper sleep while strengthening immune defences. Tremella is known for enhancing skin hydration and elasticity, making it a go-to for those interested in skin health from within. "Cordyceps supports cellular energy, stamina, and recovery, and it is ideal for active lifestyles or anyone needing a natural, caffeine-free energy lift." With an impressive 4.8 rating from almost 20,000 reviews, DIRTEA has earned significant acclaim. Notably, one thrilled consumer remarked: "I go to bed looking forward to my DIRTEA coffee every morning. It is a real treat, and I feel the benefits. I also love a DIRTEA on the go." One enthusiast shared: "I didn't think I'd like this as much as I do. I was looking for something to help with my concentration and focus. I'm going through perimenopause, and my brain feels very scattered a lot of the time. I also knew caffeine wasn't my friend, but I love coffee. "So, having already jumped on the DIRTEA Cacao bandwagon, I thought I'd give the coffee a go and see if a) it would help reduce my caffeine intake and b) would help with my focus and energy levels. Pleased to say it is doing both, and I actually really look forward to my morning coffee now, it tastes great! Well done, DIRTEA." While many users were singing its praises, some weren't entirely convinced by the coffee's effects. A customer remarked, "I can't say I noticed much difference after finishing one jar... Maybe I need more." On the other hand, another user expressed satisfaction, saying, " I love the stuff. I started to feel positive effects after a couple of days, and I only need one coffee now to get through the day." DIRTEA is available for purchase at £38 per pouch (which works out at 63p per serving), or you can subscribe and receive a free mug, jar, and spoon, all for £30 (equating to 50p per serving) when ordered directly from its website.

I tried a mushroom coffee and was blown away by the results

If you were to ask my friends to describe me, I'm fairly certain 'sleepy' would be one of the first words they'd use. I'm no stranger to a midday snooze, a post-work nap, or even a quick 30-minute rest before heading out for an evening event. Despite starting my day with a cup of coffee, I often find myself feeling quite drowsy, and it's not uncommon for me to clock in a solid 12 hours of sleep if I've had a particularly exhausting day. As a result, people have often recommended adaptogenic blends of coffee, which promise other advantages. The creators of London Nootropics secured offers from Deborah Meaden and Sara Davies on Dragon's Den in 2022. The brand incorporates special ingredients known as adaptogens that help balance physical and mental stressors. They recently released a fourth blend in their range. Mush Love is a limited edition blend made in collaboration with Fantastic Fungi, the company behind the viral Netflix documentary. It uses lion's mane, cordyceps, and chaga mushrooms to elevate mornings. The limited edition is retailing at £12 for 12 sachets. The blends' ingredients are said to counteract side effects like jitters, anxiety, and crashes—something I'm always keen to avoid. I've seen these ingredients in other drink blends, too—like DIRTEA's Cacao Super Blend, which I mixed in with vegan hot chocolate powder. It contains lion's mane (60 Servings) and is available on Amazon for £37.99. Mushroom Coffee from Protein Works also contains similar ingredients, it's currently £23.99 instead of £39.99. Although I've not tried this one. In addition to Mush Love, London Nootropics offers a variety of bundles, including the Starter Bundle. Priced at £40, it includes 12 sachet boxes of the brand's Flow Coffee (for focus), Mojo Coffee (for strength) and Zen Coffee (for calmness). Reach readers can enjoy a 20% discount on London Nootropics with the code REACH20, valid until 11:59pm (BST) on 31/05/2025. This code can be used once per customer and cannot be combined with any other offers. I've previously tried London Nootropics' blends Flow and Mojo. Mojo uses cordyceps, which is believed to boost energy and stamina, increase oxygen flow to muscles, enhance aerobic capacity, and reduce fatigue. Preparing the drink was straightforward. I mixed it with hot oat milk, which resulted in a rather bitter taste. However, a dash of caramel syrup quickly fixed this, and I found myself enjoying it just like any other cup of joe. The effects were immediate, with a noticeable increase in alertness. I found myself taking deeper breaths and feeling physically stronger, which was somewhat unexpected. This could certainly be a beneficial option on workout days. As a remote worker, I noticed an increase in my typing speed, which I attributed to the coffee. Usually, such an energy surge would leave me jittery, but I experienced none of that. I didn't feel the need for my customary lunchtime nap or my 5pm snooze, which was quite an achievement. Aside from the slightly bitter taste, the only negative I found with the drink is the long-term cost compared to regular coffee; the packs would make perfect gifts, though, for health-minded friends.

Dragons' Den-backed coffee leaves shopper 'hooked on one taste'

Available in a range of flavours, the adaptogenic coffee blends are said to "enhance cognitive performance and improve brain health" When both Deborah Meaden and Sara Davies from Dragons' Den express interest in a product, it's often a strong indicator of its potential. That was the case in 2022 when the founders of London Nootropics — a brand known for its adaptogenic coffee blends designed to 'enhance cognitive performance and support brain health' — impressed the Dragons and secured offers from both investors. Since then, the company has expanded its reach, launching in prestigious retailers including Harrods, Selfridges, and even Meta's offices. London Nootropics is also currently collaborating with the Netflix documentary Fantastic Fungi, which celebrates the remarkable properties of mushrooms. As part of this collaboration, they've released a limited-edition blend called Mush Love. Priced at £12 for 12 sachets, this adaptogenic coffee features a powerful mix of Hifas da Terra lion's mane, cordyceps, and chaga mushroom extracts — formulated to combat fatigue and sharpen mental focus. Zain Peer, the co-founder of London Nootropics, expressed his enthusiasm, stating: "At London Nootropics, we're passionate about creating functional coffee blends that help people feel and perform their best," and noted that "Collaborating with Fantastic Fungi was a natural fit, aligning our love for adaptogens with their mission to inspire a deeper connection to mushrooms and nature." Louie Schwartzberg, the creative force behind Fantastic Fungi, couldn't contain his enthusiasm about teaming up with London Nootropics, adding: "We are thrilled to partner with London Nootropics on this exciting collaboration." He continued: "Mushrooms have always been a source of wonder and inspiration for me, and this partnership allows us to share their incredible benefits in a tasty cup of coffee," reports the Liverpool Echo. London Nootropics doesn't only sell the Mush Love blend, they also offer an array of packs including the aptly named London Nootropics Starter Bundle. For £40, this deal provides you with 12 sachet boxes encompassing Flow Coffee for focus, Mojo Coffee for strength, and Zen Coffee to relax. Then there's the Selection Box, which gives you a taste of all three coffees with 12 sachets, ideal for those just wanting to try them without too much outlay upfront. Liverpool Echo readers can enjoy a 20% discount on London Nootropics with the code REACH20, valid until 31/05/2025 at 11:59pm (BST). The code can be used once per customer and cannot be combined with other through until 31/05/2025 at 11:59pm (BST). This one-time-use code per customer can't be merged with other promotions. For an alternative option, consider DIRTEA Mushroom Coffee with Lion's Mane (60 Servings) available on Amazon for £37.99. This product, rated 4.3 stars, contains Organic Lion's Mane, Vitamin B, maca and ashwagandha root powders, all mixed with arabica coffee to enhance energy levels. Holland and Barrett offer the Cheerful Buddha Lion's Mane Mushroom Coffee Blend 150g for £11.24. This caffeine-free blend is infused with Lion's mane mushrooms, coconut oil, ashwagandha and cacao - all ingredients aimed at promoting wellbeing. Customers who have already tried the London Nootropics Starter Bundle have raved about it. One said: "I had a few free samples from my nutritionist and after one cup I was hooked. I tried flow and mojo on separate days, they both helped with my brain fog and most of all stopped the panicky sensation I get in my chest if I'm trying to enjoy a coffee and feel guilty I should be up and doing things. Zen is now my favourite for mornings where there is no rush (my weekend coffee), the others are brilliant for when I either need to get moving to walk somewhere or go to my Pilates class or just need the focus without the fog!". Another customer chimed in, saying: "Absolutely love this coffee, it tastes fantastic with oat milk and honey. Mojo gives me a great boost but without the crash of other coffee products. Love all these coffee definitely my favourite brand." A third customer, a self-proclaimed tea enthusiast, was won over by the coffee, saying: "I don't drink coffee as I am a die hard tea consumer BUT after trying these at my sister's insistence I am now hooked. The coffees are absolutely delicious and they really work for me. My favourite is zen but they all deliver amazing benefits without the punch and bitterness of regular coffee. Would highly recommend these. Will definitely be a regular buyer." Another customer however, raised an eyebrow at the cost, stating: "I absolutely love these coffees, they smell so good, are delicious and convenient The packaging is also beautiful and they make nice gifts but I wonder if they could be cheaper if you could buy a refill pack or something, I just can't afford to have them all the time." In conclusion, another purchaser shared their experience, adding: "I am enjoying delicious taste of this coffee, not sure if I can see effects of adaptogens yet but perhaps I need to pay more attention as wasn't really. I did not get ingredients descriptions cards in my boxes and I can see from other reviews that people got them and also personal messages, nice gesture, nothing in my boxes."
