Longstaff joins Leeds from Newcastle in £12m move
London, July 19 (UNI) Newly promoted Leeds United have signed midfielder Sean Longstaff from Newcastle for £12m plus potential add-ons. The 27-year-old, who had one year left on his contract at St James' Park, has signed a four-year deal. The move ends an 18-year association with Newcastle, having come through the ranks at the club. "I think from the first time I spoke to Leeds, I got a feeling that they really wanted me," Longstaff told LUTV. "It just fills you full of confidence and it just makes you want to repay those people. It is a massive, massive football club - similar to Newcastle in a lot of ways. "It was going to take a lot for me to leave Newcastle to be honest and I wasn't just going to leave to go anywhere so it had to be the right place for me and my family and I think this is a perfect place. "Every time I came to play at Leeds the atmosphere was amazing, it was always bouncing and a really tough place to play, and [I'm] just looking forward to having that on my side rather than having to play against." He made 214 senior appearances for the Magpies, but played only 787 minutes for Eddie Howe's side in the Premier League last season - mostly as a substitute. Longstaff also made five appearances in the Carabao Cup last season, but was an unused substitute as Newcastle defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the final to win their domestic trophy in 70 years, according to a BBC news. Leeds had already agreed personal terms with the English midfielder but had an offer of £10m rejected by Newcastle earlier this week. Longstaff is Leeds' fifth signing this summer following the arrivals of defenders Sebastiaan Bornauw, Jaka Bijol and Gabriel Gudmundsson as well as German forward Lukas Nmecha. Daniel Farke's side will begin their Premier League campaign at home to Everton on August 18. They play Manchester United in a pre-season friendly in Stockholm on Saturday, before further friendlies against Villarreal and AC Milan in August. UNI BM

‘I got the feeling Leeds really wanted me': Longstaff on why he left boyhood club Newcastle
Leeds: Leeds United made their fifth signing of the summer with the arrival of Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United. The experienced midfielder put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Elland Road. Longstaff arrives at Leeds having made 25 appearances in the Premier League last campaign for the Magpies, helping them to qualify for the Champions League. He was also a key figure in ending a 70-year trophy drought at St. James' Park by winning the League Cup. 'I remember obviously playing here as a little kid, nine, 10 years old. It is funny where life takes you. So to be back here now with the plans for the club and stuff, I think it is just really exciting to get going. I spoke to [Karl] Darlow straight away, but I have got to meet everyone. It seems like a really good group. I have heard great things. 'I think there is something to be said for a team that wants you and a club that really wants you. I think from the first time I spoke to Leeds, I sort of got a feeling that they really wanted me,' said Longstaff to Leeds United's media team. After enjoying important loan spells early in his career, Longstaff made his debut for Newcastle in a 2018 cup tie with Nottingham Forest and has since gone on to represent his boyhood club over 200 times in all competitions. The midfielder also admitted that it would have taken a lot for him to leave Newcastle, but believes the recently promoted club provides the right environment for him. 'It just fills you full of confidence and it just makes you want to repay those people. It is a massive, massive football club similar to Newcastle in a lot of ways. It was going to take a lot for us to leave Newcastle to be honest and I wasn't just going to leave to go anywhere so it had to be the right place for me and my family and I think this is a perfect place. 'I got to watch pretty much all the games and see a team that was really exciting to watch, athletic, really good on the ball. Every time I came to play at Leeds the atmosphere was amazing it was always bouncing and a really tough place to play and just looking forward to having that on my side rather than having to play against,' he added.

Leeds sign midfielder Longstaff from Newcastle
LONDON: Newly-promoted Leeds have signed midfielder Sean Longstaff from Premier League rivals Newcastle, it was announced Friday. No fee was disclosed but British media reports said the four-year deal was worth an initial £10 million ($13 million), rising to £12 million ($16 million). Longstaff, 27, in the final season of his Newcastle contract, has moved to Elland Road after being restricted to eight Premier League starts for his hometown club last term. He made 171 top-flight appearances for the Magpies after coming through their academy, but fell behind Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali in the race for regular first-team football. Longstaff is Leeds' fifth pre-season signing following the arrivals of Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Gabriel Gudmundsson. Leeds, promoted after winning last season's second-tier Championship, are looking to re-establish themselves among the elite. They were one of English football's pre-eminent clubs of the late 1960s and early 1970s, as well as the last team to win the old First Division, the forerunner of the Premier League, in 1992. — AFP

The 27-year-old has joined the Whites for an initial £12million, with a further £3m in potential add-ons. Longstaff has inked a four-year deal at Elland Road, having been a major target for the newly-promoted side, who had three bids turned down by the Magpies before an agreement was finally reached. Longstaff, who joined Leeds' Premier League rivals at the age of nine, has made 214 appearances for the Magpies, hitting 16 goals. He played 32 times for Eddie Howe's men last term as they lifted the Carabao Cup and finished fifth in the league to secure Champions League qualification - but was largely used as a substitute. "Every time I came to play at Leeds the atmosphere was amazing, it was always bouncing and a really tough place to play, and [I'm] just looking forward to having that on my side rather than having to play against." Newcastle said: "Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Sean for his outstanding contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future." With 171 appearances in the top flight, Longstaff brings crucial Premier League pedigree to Daniel Farke's squad following their promotion from the Championship as champions. Longstaff becomes Leeds' fifth new addition, following Lukas Nmecha, Jaka Bijol, Sebastiaan Bournauw and Gabriel Gudmundsson. His arrival takes their summer spending to around £45m. A sixth may not be far away, as Leeds are continuing to work towards a deal for Hoffenheim star Anton Stach. Farke's side begin their Premier League campaign at home to Everton on August 18.
