St. Paul firefighters nationally recognized for carrying kids from house fire

Two St. Paul firefighters have been recognized nationally with an award of valor. Firefighters Jacob Ryks and Mason Conlin found multiple young children in a burning home in Payne-Phalen last year and carried them out. 'Despite the valiant efforts,' four of the six children died, said the award from Firehouse Magazine. Two of the children and their mother survived. The Michael O. McNamee Award of Valor is named for a now-retired Worcester, Mass., fire department district chief. It 'reflects a larger mission about what it means to be brave in the face of danger,' according to the magazine. McNamee 'displayed great courage at the Worcester Cold Storage Warehouse Fire in December 1999, when he made the bold decision to stop additional Worcester firefighters from entering the building when there already were six lost inside.' It was the middle of the night on Jan. 3, 2024, when an unattended candle started a fire at a home on Arkwright Street near Maryland Avenue. Ker Lor and her children became trapped in the home that was engulfed in flames and heavy smoke. The children were 1 to 6 years old and included a set of twins. Lor's husband, Pa Cheng Vang, was at work. Ryks forced his way into the home as Conlin prepared a firehose. In the first bedroom, Ryks felt around and found a child on a bed, who he carried outside to turn over for care. He went back into the same room, encountered a bunkbed and found another child who he carried outside. 'With water on the fire, Conlin peeled off and began to search, when he found a child in another bedroom and carried the individual outside,' Firehouse Magazine said in the commendation. 'He continued to search. Instincts kicked in, and he unraveled a blanket and found another child, who he brought to medics outside.' Ryks went back again to the room where he found two children and located another child. A firefighter and captain found the sixth child and Lor. The two firefighters have also been recognized locally, with the MN 100 Club presenting First Responder of the Year Awards to them in St. Paul in November. Abigail R. Election results: Voters deciding next Ward 6 city councilor in northeast Salem

This story will be updated at 8 p.m. with initial election results. Voters in northeast Salem are deciding who will represent them in the Ward 6 position on the Salem City Council. Mai Vang, Logan Lor and Deanna Garcia are competing for the seat, which is unpaid and nonpartisan, and includes neighborhoods near Interstate 5, Lancaster Drive, Center Street and Sunnyview Road. Salem has been without a Ward 6 councilor since January when former Councilor Julie Hoy was sworn in as mayor. The winner will serve out the remainder of Hoy's term, which was set to expire at the end of 2026. For races to finish an unexpired term, the candidate with the most votes wins outright. Vang is a Salem family law attorney who graduated from Willamette University College of Law. She said she is focused on issues like the city budget, affordable housing, safety and livability, and economic development. As of May 14, Vang's campaign had raised $31,160, according to Oregon Secretary of State's Office finance records. Garcia is an operations and policy analyst for the Oregon Department of Transportation and chair of the North Lancaster Neighborhood Association. Garcia said she is focused on public safety, homelessness, livability and the budget and said she's watched services and livability in Ward 6 fail to keep pace with population growth. As of April 24, her campaign reported raising $57,172, according to Oregon Secretary of State's Office finance records. Lor has worked as an Oregon Department of Corrections officer for 27 years. He is focused on jobs, livability and collaboration and said he wants to bring his perspective as a blue-collar worker and father to the council. "We need to change the policies at City Hall, because what the systemic social-economic disparity has done is create the northeast into a poverty area in Salem," Lor said. Lor ran unsuccessfully for Ward 6 in 2014. He was criticized in the weeks before the election by Marion County Democrats for his "anti-LGBTQ social media posts" and was told he was not eligible for endorsement. In the Facebook post, Lor said gay rights were not equivalent to civil rights. He had no reported financial activity for donations to his campaign on the Secretary of State's Office website. Frankie Lor leans on Zac Purton again as Savvy Twinkle looks to break his duck at Happy Valley

Frankie Lor and Zac Purton after Horsepower's winner at Happy Valley in October. Photos: Kenneth Chan Trainer and champion jockey bid to add to haul of 15 winners from 41 runners when teaming up this season Frankie Lor Fu-chuen is confident he can continue his strong partnership with champion jockey Zac Purton when Savvy Twinkle lines up in the Class Four Sports Club Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup (1,000m) at Happy Valley on Wednesday night. The Capitalist gelding is yet to win in five career starts, but posted his best effort yet when second to the in-form Super Sixty at the track and distance of Wednesday night's race last month. Savvy Twinkle was rousted early by Alexis Badel and snaked his way to the rail to lead after 300m, before only being collared in the final 100m after a game rally. That experience will stand him in great stead and despite facing a wide draw in barrier nine, Lor is confident of a big run from the four-year-old. Super Sixty rallies up the inside! Apprentice @elliswong05 guides the chestnut to a second win at Happy Valley for Caspar Fownes... 👏#HappyWednesday | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 23, 2025 'Last time he went well, it's the same distance but last time he was drawn a bit better,' said Lor. 'The pace will be fast, so we'll have to see after he jumps. 'The form looks good and I think there is more to come from him. Hopefully this time Zac can help me.' Lor has enjoyed a fruitful partnership with Purton this season, with the pair teaming for 15 winners from 41 total runners for a very healthy 37 per cent strike rate. 'It's always a positive to have Zac on board – when I ask him he'll pick the right one, so that's why he has 15 winners for me,' said Lor. Acappella Nova races on-speed under Ange Jones and goes on with the job for @tonygollan 🏇@BrisRacingClub — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) October 16, 2024 The 59-year-old trainer also has fascinating Australian import The Red Hare running in the Class Three Wyndham Handicap (1,200m) under jockey Derek Leung Ka-chun. The son of Sebring Sun – known as Acappella Nova pre-import – was beaten on debut in Australia but won his subsequent two starts, scoring over 1,200m at Eagle Farm and 1,350m at Doomben. The Red Hare ran well to finish third in a recent barrier trial at the Valley, racing greenly but always under a tight hold. And Lor is hoping for a big run from him on his local debut, though the draw in stall nine could have again been kinder. 'He's a little bit nervous in the mornings but when he starts cantering he's very quiet,' said Lor. 'He needs to learn a bit more but when I've trialled him, he's been good. 'I think he's OK off a rating of 67, but the draw is a bit unfortunate because stall nine is a bit wider than I'd want. 'I have put the earmuffs on him because he's a bit nervous and I think that will help him. He's got a good chance if overcoming his draw.' Lor has bounced back from a slow start to the campaign, which saw him go winless in the first month of the season until Master Trillion broke the drought on October 6. With 42 winners, he sits just two behind third-placed Ricky Yiu Poon-fai and is not too far off the pace overall, with 14 separating him from title leader John Size.

Frankie Lor chases Class Two double with in-form pair at Sha Tin

Frankie Lor Fu-chuen will chase a Class Two double at Sha Tin on Sunday afternoon with in-form pair Voyage Samurai and Bottomuptogether headlining the handler's all-out assault on the 10-race card. Lor, who has a runner in each of the weekend's races, will hope Voyage Samurai is ready for the 1,800m of the Class Two Hong Kong Lions Cup. An all-the-way winner over a mile last start, Voyage Samurai finds himself in a strong contest featuring the likes of Five G Patch, Helene Feeling, La City Blanche, Winning Dragon and Bundle Award. 'I think he can handle the 1,800m because he has a big stride and he can keep on well on the speed. Since we put the blinkers on, he has improved,' said Lor of his five-year-old, who has sported blinkers in his past three starts for a fourth, a second and a win. Last-start winner Voyage Samurai headlines Sunday's 11-runner Class 2 Lions Cup at Sha Tin! 🏆 #HKracing Fields 👉 — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) April 17, 2025 The only jockey to salute aboard Voyage Samurai with five successes, Derek Leung Ka-chun retains the ride and the pair jump from gate four. Bottomuptogether also begins from barrier four in the Class Two Kowloon Bay Handicap (1,200m) as he tackles Sha Tin's all-weather track for the first time. Successful in the grade over the Happy Valley 1,000m three starts back, Bottomuptogether has done just about everything but win over six furlongs at Sha Tin this season. After three seconds and a third over the turf 1,200m, Lor has opted to roll the dice on the dirt. FOUR more wins to go! 😏 A new all-time Hong Kong wins record is looming as @zpurton posts his 1,810th Hong Kong victory with a double at Happy Valley aboard favourite Bottomuptogether in the Class 2 dash... 🎯#HappyWednesday | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) January 15, 2025 Zac Purton sticks with the four-year-old son of Shamus Award and they do battle with the likes of Copartner Prance, Beauty Waves and Stellar Express. 'He usually trials very well on the dirt. He can lead or he can sit second. There aren't too many Class Two 1,000m or 1,200m races, so we need to try the dirt. He's in good form,' said Lor, who has had a winner at the past five Sha Tin meetings. One of the gallopers successful in that streak was South Star, who will look to make it two victories on the bounce in Sunday's Class Three Ho Chung River Handicap (1,400m). A convincing winner at the course and distance on March 30, South Star steps up in grade and will again be partnered by Andrea Atzeni. Nice win, South Star! @Atzenijockey guides Frankie Lor's youngster to a stylish first win at his third start... 👊#LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 30, 2025 Triumphant More is another in-form galloper among Lor's full weekend book, with the four-year-old chasing a fourth win of his debut season in the Class Three Ngau Tau Kok Handicap (1,200m). Second at the course and distance last start, Triumphant More looks well placed to help Lor, who sits seventh in the trainers' premiership, add to his 35 victories so far this campaign. The affable handler also saddles up Silver Destiny, Dreaming Winner, Fun N Fun Together, Beauty Live, Lucky Impact and Victory Moments this weekend. Looking forward, Lor expects to have two runners on Champions Day next weekend – Lucky With You in the Group One Chairman's Sprint Prize (1,200m) and Happy Together in the Group One Champions Mile. The latter will face one less international raider after Lake Forest was withdrawn by William Haggas on Thursday.
