Lorde Makes Candid Comments About Her Gender Identity And Feeling Somewhere 'In The Middle'
Lorde has spoken candidly about her changing feelings towards her gender identity. Earlier this month, the What Was That singer was among the guests at this year's Met Gala, and made an interesting comment about her outfit while speaking to Vogue on the red carpet. Describing the ensemble as 'something of an Easter egg', she said: 'More will be revealed. But I just love the [outfit's] open back. To me, it really represents where I'm at gender-wise. I feel like a man and a woman.' "This is my creation. it's something of an easter egg, more will be revealed, but I just love the open back, to me it really represents where I'm at gender wise. I feel like a man AND a woman"— Lorde talking to Emma Chamberlain at the Met — Lorde Updates 🧬⛓️ (@LordeUpdatesBR) May 6, 2025 Lorde elaborated more on this during an interview in Rolling Stone magazine published on Thursday. Describing herself as 'in the middle gender-wise', she revealed that her friend, fellow singer Chappell Roan, recently asked her whether this meant she identifies as non-binary. 'I was like, 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man',' she explained. 'I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.' Reflecting on the current hardships faced by transgender and other gender non-conforming people, Lorde added: 'I don't think that [my identity] is radical, to be honest. I see these incredibly brave young people, and it's complicated. 'Making the expression privately is one thing, but I want to make very clear that I'm not trying to take any space from anyone who has more on the line than me. Because I'm, comparatively, in a very safe place as a wealthy, cis, white woman.' Lorde pops up in New York's Washington Square Park, performs new song after cops shut down surprise show
Surprising her fans, New Zealand-born pop icon Lorde pulled off an impromptu performance in New York's Washington Square Park, on Tuesday night. Earlier that day, she had asked her fans to meet at the park at 7 PM in an Instagram post. By 6:47 PM, a massive crowd gathered at the park, buzzing with anticipation for Lorde's first new single since 2021, What Was That. But just as the excitement peaked, the police stepped in. According to an NYPD spokesperson speaking to PEOPLE, the gathering was halted because the organisers didn't have the proper permits to perform in a public park. 'Officers were alerted of an unscheduled event… Sound and park permits are required… and the individuals were not in possession of either.' Lorde, always gracious, complied, without protest. She posted an update for her fans on her Instagram, saying: 'Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down,' and followed up with an apology: 'I am truly amazed by how many of you showed up!!! But they're telling me you gotta disperse… I'm so sorry.' But the night wasn't over. In true Lorde fashion, the moment transformed into something even more unforgettable. About two hours later, her longtime collaborator Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange arrived with a speaker and played the unreleased track for a loyal group of fans who'd decided to stick around. Then, just before 9:30 PM, Lorde reappeared, climbing onto a wooden platform in the middle of the park's fountain to give an acoustic, raw performance of What Was That. Dressed in an oversized jeans with wallet chains and a loose white shirt, Lorde gave a candid, stripped-down show only she could pull off. Some fans even clambered up trees to get a better view, while others made videos, which quickly went viral. The Internet lit up with reactions. A user wrote, 'All of us who got there and waited for her and then left after being told by the cops and parks people that it was canceled and she wasn't coming deserve priority on tickets when she tours.' Another user wrote, 'It is wonderful to see happy people. Bravo to the singer Lord.' Lorde's new single ‘What Was That' to drop tonight after weeks of cryptic messages
Some lucky fans were fortunate to hear a sneak peak of her latest track in New York City but not before police tried to shut it down. Lorde posted on her Instagram and Whatsapp group chat for her fans, telling them to meet her 'in the park at 7pm', with a photo of Washington Square Park. Fans started flooding the park an hour before her appearance, with many sharing photos online of eager fans scaling trees to catch a glimpse of the Royals hitmaker. However, they were left disappointed when Lorde posted again just before she was due to appear, explaining that the police were shutting it down. 'Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down,' the message read. 'I am truly amazed by how many of you showed !!! 'But they're telling me you gotta disperse ... I'm so sorry.' An hour later, the hardcore fans were still waiting for Lorde's surprise appearance. They went crazy when she appeared on a makeshift platform in black jeans and a white button-down, the same outfit she wore to tease the song a few weeks ago. 🚨 Lorde at Washington Square Park playing "What Was That"!! — Lorde Updates 🧬⛓️ (@LordeUpdatesBR) April 23, 2025 Previously, fans were only given a 15-second snippet of the song - What Was That - but a few have now been able to listen to it in full while they chased the producer through the park. A post last week included a headshot of Lorde, presumed to be the single's cover art, in a red shirt with a dripping wet face. It was taken by New York-based photographer Talia Chetrit. Lorde's social media revival and the sudden string of cryptic messages sparked excitement and speculation among fans eagerly awaiting new music from the singer. Her last release was her 2021 album Solar Power, her third full-length record since breaking on to the music scene with her hit single, Royals, and the accompanying album, Pure Heroine, in 2013. Since then, Lorde has released a new album every four years.
