New remains bring California wildfire toll to 31
(KTLA) – The death toll from January's historic and devastating Southern California wildfires continues to rise. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office announced that additional human remains were located at a home in Altadena. Crews responding to the area Monday quickly determined that the suspected remains were human and directly related to the Eaton Fire. The discovery marked the first new wildfire victim found since April 2. This yet-to-be-identified person has since been added to L.A. County's ongoing list of victims from January's wildfires. The current tally is 31 deaths, including 12 in the Palisades Fire and now 19 in the Eaton Fire. The Medical Examiner's Office relies on complex scientific methods to identify human remains which are typically in poor condition from the fires. Scientists utilize dental records, DNA comparisons, radiographs, prosthetic serial numbers and other techniques to identify any remains that come into their possession. The Medical Examiner's Office also works with local law enforcement to cross-reference missing persons reports to narrow the search. 'Due to the complexity of these methods and the process, it can take considerable time to confirm a decedent's identity in these types of cases,' officials said. There is no current timeline for when, or if, this latest victim will be identified. Of the 31 people confirmed dead in the blazes, only one other person has yet to be identified. That person's remains were recovered on Jan. 14, on the 600 block of Lomas Avenue in Pacific Palisades.

Richard Simmons' longtime housekeeper denies ‘kidnapping' him, says he was happy in final years
Richard Simmons' longtime housekeeper and companion Teresa Reveles is speaking out about the late fitness guru's final years. In a candid conversation – her first broadcast interview – Reveles told the 'Today' show about the unique nature of their relationship, and claimed that he was incredibly happy in the years before his death on July 13, 2024. She began working for Simmons decades ago, in 1988, and while some rumors have claimed that she was to blame for his disappearance from the spotlight in his later years, she denied it. When host Liz Kreutz asked about speculation that she'd 'kidnapped' him, she laughed and replied, 'No, I think he kidnapped me!' While she said their relationship wasn't sexual, she did admit they were very close. 'He (fell) in love with me right away, that he says, 'No, you're never going to leave me,'' she explained. She said that to her, he was 'like a brother … like my father, my friend, my boyfriend, my everything.' 5 Richard Simmons with his longtime housekeeper and companion Teresa Reveles in 2017. Facebook / Teresa Reveles Reveles insisted that she and Simmons weren't romantic partners, and said that if anyone was confused by the unconventional relationship she shared with him, 'It's their problem. We were very happy, and the last ten years was the most happy years.' When asked about Simmons' sexual orientation, which he never publicly disclosed, she refused to answer, but when she was asked if she ever knew about any romantic partners he had, she said, 'Me. He never love anybody like me.' She added, 'Well, he wasn't my lover, not sexually, but he kissed me all the time.' 5 Richard Simmons in 2017. He died on July 13, 2024 at age 76. Facebook / Teresa Reveles As for how secluded Simmons became in the years leading up to his death, she said, 'He was not happy that he was getting old, OK? He says, 'No, I want people to remember me the way I was.' You know … full of life.' Reveles was the one who found Simmons after he died. She said that was a 'crazy, sad day,' but that he had been 'very, very happy.' 'I never saw Richard, in 36 years, unhappy, or mean, or upset,' she said. In a message to Fox News Digital, Tom Estey, Simmons' longtime friend, said, 'Let's CELEBRATE Richard – the human being. It's nearly his Birthday. I worked with him for 30 plus years, and more importantly, we were close friends even longer. I choose to celebrate these milestones.' On July 11, 2024, Simmons suffered a fall and spent the following day in bed. On the morning of July 13, Simmons was found unresponsive on his bedroom floor. Authorities were called, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The fitness instructor and TV icon died as a result of blunt traumatic injuries, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office announced two months later. The 76-year-old's manner of death was ruled as an accident. Arteriosclerotic cardiovascular was listed as a contributing factor. At the time, Reveles told People, 'When I saw him, he looked peaceful.' 5 Richard Simmons speaks to an audience before a summer fashion show at Grand Central Terminal in New York City on June 2, 2006. I had a heart attack a few years ago, and my hands did the same.' The day before he died, Reveles said Simmons' leg was hurting from a fall the previous day. Simmons passed away one day after his birthday, July 12. She told him, 'Let's go to the hospital. Maybe you broke your leg.' Simmons protested, 'No, Teresa, not on my birthday. Why [don't we] wait, and we do it in the morning?' 'But in the morning, it was too late,' Reveles said. Los Angeles Police Department officials confirmed to Fox News Digital at the time that there was 'no foul play' suspected in his death. Fox News Digital's Stephanie Nolasco and Tracy Wright contributed to this report.

7-Eleven worker dies after allegedly being attacked by manager
7-Eleven spokesperson told a local TV station that the company was fully cooperating with the investigation and that the suspect was fired. A 7-Eleven employee in Los Angeles died after allegedly being attacked by her manager, who authorities are searching for, according to local police and the deceased worker's family. Jessica McLaughlin was found unconscious by Los Angeles police on June 24 after patrol officers received a radio call around 2:15 p.m. regarding a felony battery at the convenience store on Melrose Avenue, according to a department news release. McLaughlin, who police said was in her 20s, got into a verbal dispute with another woman inside the 7-Eleven that escalated into a physical altercation, the department stated. Once discovered by police, McLaughlin was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead on July 2. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office is in the process of determining McLaughlin's cause and manner of death, police said. 'This attack should have never happened' McLaughlin's brother, Sean McLaughlin, created a GoFundMe to cover the costs of his sister's funeral. "Jessica McLaughlin is my sister — but she's so much more than that. She's a daughter, a best friend, and the kind of auntie every kid dreams of having," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "She's been my rock these past five years while we've lived together. She was always there — for me, for our family, and honestly, for anyone who needed her." Sean McLaughlin also described on the GoFundMe page what allegedly transpired on the day of his sister's death, accusing "one of her managers" of "violently and senselessly" attacking her on June 24. The brother alleges his sister's manager "held her down, sat on top of her and didn't let her breathe." "While some coworkers tried to help and stop it, they were attacked too. When she finally got free, she collapsed. She wasn't breathing," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe about his sister. As McLaughlin's coworkers gave her CPR and called for help, the manager "ran to the back room to try and delete the security footage — and then fled the scene on her bike," the brother wrote. Neither the LAPD nor McLaughlin's brother identified the manager allegedly involved in the incident. "This attack should have never happened," Sean McLaughlin wrote. More news: Father and son identified as campers found dead at Isle Royale National Park GoFundMe for Jessica McLaughlin nears $50,000 goal The GoFundMe created by McLaughlin's brother is nearing its $50,000 goal. As of July 3, it has received over $31,000 in donations. "We're trying to give her the goodbye she deserves," Sean McLaughlin wrote on the GoFundMe page. "We want to give her a beautiful service — something that honors who she was and how deeply she was loved." A 7-Eleven spokesperson told KTLA that the company was fully cooperating with the investigation and that the suspect has since been fired. USA TODAY contacted 7-Eleven and Sean McLaughlin on Thursday, July 3, but has not received a response. Jonathan Limehouse covers breaking and trending news for USA TODAY. Reach him at JLimehouse@

Doctor accused of providing Matthew Perry with ketamine has agreed to plead guilty, Entertainment News
Federal prosecutors said in a statement that Dr Salvador Plasencia, of Santa Monica, California, is expected to plead guilty to four counts of distributing ketamine. He could face a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison and a US$2 million (S$2.56 million) fine. The Friends actor — who portrayed Chandler Bing in the US show — was found dead on Oct 28, 2023, aged 54, at his home in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office autopsy report, Matthew Perry died due to "acute effects" of ketamine and subsequent drowning. Dr Plasencia, 43, who filed a plea agreement on Monday (June 16), will be the fourth person to plead guilty in connection to the late actor's passing. He was set to go on trial in August. The US Attorney's office for the Central District of California said they expect the doctor to enter his plea in the coming weeks. According to the plea agreement, Dr Plasencia claims he worked with Dr Mark Chavez — who pleaded guilty, in October, to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine — and sold "twenty 5ml vials of ketamine, less than a full package of ketamine lozenges, and syringes" to the actor's personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa between Sept 30, 2023, and Oct 12, 2023. Chavez previously claimed in his plea agreement that he sold ketamine to Plasencia off-market for Matthew Perry to use. Iwamasa pleaded guilty on Aug 7 to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine, causing death. Chavez's sentencing is due to take place in September, and Iwamasa's in November. In August, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) clarified to E! News that Plasencia and Chavez had given up their right to advise and authorise the use of a medicine or treatment. Ahead of being arraigned, US Attorney Martin Estrada said about the duo at the time: "These defendants cared more about profiting off of Perry than caring for his well-being. "Matthew Perry's journey began with unscrupulous doctors who abused their position of trust because they saw him as a payday, to street dealers who gave him ketamine in unmarked vials."
