My run-in with rude Scarlett Johannson still shocks me to this day… she may be worth £11bn but money can't buy manners
AS Scarlett Johansson was ushered up the red carpet looking breathtaking in a skin tight nude gown, crowds gasped and flashbulbs exploded in a frenzy as it became clear we were watching a star being born. In a sea of skinny starlets, she was refreshingly curvy, and her stunning looks were already drawing gushing comparisons with 1950's sex symbol Marilyn Monroe - but Scarlett was just 19 years old and nervous. 16 Scarlett Johansson arriving at the Golden Globe Awards on the night of our meeting in 2004 Credit: Getty 16 The smiling starlet, pictured at the after party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, had just stunned Nadia in their encounter Credit: Getty 16 Scarlett was nominated for Lost In Translation with Bill Murray, the role that first shot her to worldwide fame in 2004 Credit: Alamy 16 Sun writer Nadia Cohen at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles in 2004 Credit: Supplied That was 20 years ago. Now the phenomenal success of Scarlett's latest action movie Jurassic World: Rebirth has sent the actress' earning power stratospheric - with her worldwide box office takings soaring to a staggering £11billion ($14.8bn). She surpassed Marvel Cinematic Universe stars It's an astonishing feat, but when I first met the actress as she was starting out in Hollywood she was, in my opinion, not prepared for the intense scrutiny that lay ahead. We had a painfully awkward encounter at the Golden Globe Awards in January 2004, where she was nominated for Lost In Translation, the 2003 role that first shot her to worldwide fame. I was reporting on the awards show for an American entertainment magazine, and about halfway through the ceremony I nipped away from the press area in the balcony to use the toilet. As I was washing my hands, Scarlett emerged from a cubicle behind me and our eyes met in the mirror. I smiled, but she did not smile back. I blurted out: "I love your dress!" In hindsight it was a pretty obvious thing to say, but I genuinely meant it. She looked fantastic. Scarlett Johansson corrects Today's Savannah Guthrie after host botches famous Jurassic Park line in awkward moment I looked away, and turned off the tap. But instead of giving a polite nod or simply saying, "Thanks," she glared back, slowly looked my plain black frock up and down, and asked with a sarcastic sneer: "Is this the part where I'm supposed to say I like yours?" I was too stunned to reply, and spent the rest of the evening wondering why on earth she would have even bothered to be so rude to a total stranger. She is now a 40-year-old mother-of-two and has the world at her feet, but continues to rub people up the wrong way. Her love life has been colourful, to say the least. She briefly dated Hollywood producer Jack Antonoff when they were at high school together, and in 2006 had a year-long fling with Pearl Harbour hunk Next she fell for heartthrob Ryan Reynolds, 48, who would become the first of her three husbands. They had only been dating for a year when it emerged they had tied the knot on Vancouver Island in September 2008 - but their marriage was over three years later, allegedly due to her workload. I was too stunned to reply, and spent the rest of the evening wondering why on earth she would have even bothered to be so rude to a total stranger Nadia Cohen Scarlett swiftly moved on to movie executive Nate Naylor in 2011. By 2012 however, she had fallen for French journalist Romain Dauriac during a trip to Paris, and they married in a secret ceremony at a ranch in Montana in 2014. They had a daughter - Rose, now 10 - but There was a bitter custody battle over where Rose would live, and in a terse statement issued at the time Scarlett pleaded for privacy. She said: "Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same." Yet she bounced back fast and was dating Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost by 2017. The pair tied the knot in New York in October 2020 and now have a three-year-old son called Cosmo. She has also complained about being "I think women that are curvy can be pigeonholed in that bombshell thing,' she moaned. 'It's not like I actively look for sexy roles. 'It's not a requirement that my character be pretty and delicate. I never think about my character being sexy, unless that's written in." Earlier this year, in March, she grumbled about eager fans asking for photos with her. In an interview with InStyle magazine she revealed her strict policy for getting rid of unwanted admirers. 'It really offends a lot of people," she admitted. 'It doesn't mean I'm not appreciative, of course, that people are fans, or happy to see me. 'But I always say to people, 'I'm not working.' And that means I don't want to be identified as being in this time and place with you. I'm doing my own thing. 'I like to be in my own thoughts that have nothing to do with what other people think of me. I don't like being self-conscious.' Just last week Scarlett was caught shrieking at photographers while filming her new drama Paper Tiger. 'Move out the f*****g way,' she yelled, ushering a snapper away with her hand. 'I'm working.' 'I see Woody whenever I can, and I have had a lot of conversations with him about it. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.' Meanwhile other stars including Scarlett was also accused of "whitewashing" Japanese manga art when she was cast as a cyborg in Ghost In The Shell in 2015. In the original animated films and video games her character was Asian, and more than 15,000 people signed a petition urging producers to replace her with an Asian actress. Scarlett defended herself, arguing: 'Acting goes through trends. "You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job. 'There are a lot of social lines being drawn now, and a lot of political correctness is being reflected in art." She came under fire again in 2018 for arguing that a straight woman should be able to play trans characters - but amid a torrent of harsh criticism from the trans community she dropped out of her role in Rub and Tug. She had been set to play crime kingpin Dante 'Tex' Gill, who was born Lois Jean Gill but identified as a man, and used his massage parlours as a front for prostitution dens. A year later Scarlett admitted she had been insensitive. In hindsight, I mishandled that situation. I was not sensitive Scarlett Johansson 'In hindsight, I mishandled that situation,' she said. 'I was not sensitive, my initial reaction to it. 'I wasn't totally aware of how the trans community felt about those actors playing and how they felt in general about cis actors playing transgender people. "I wasn't aware of that conversation, I was uneducated. So I learned a lot through that process. I misjudged that, It was a hard time. 'It was like a whirlwind. I felt terribly about it. To feel like you're kind of tone-deaf to something is not a good feeling.' Perhaps it's not as much fun as it sounds being universally admired as a sex bomb and hounded by adoring autograph hunters - but that evening in the ladies loo of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, I was simply being polite. And she should have done the same. 16 Critics said her role in Ghost in the Shell should have gone to an Asian actress Credit: Alamy 16 Thousands campaigned for Scarlett to quit the 2015 action role Credit: PARAMOUNT PICTURES

Scarlett Johansson Reveals ‘Full Circle Moment' With Her Brother At Her J World Premiere, And I Love When She Reminds Us She's A Twin
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Scarlett Johansson once said that for 'like 15 years,' she's wanted to be in a Jurassic Park movie. As luck would have it, her wish was granted, as she's now the lead ofJurassic World Rebirth. The prospect of getting to lead such a massive film seems cool enough on its own. However, during a premiere for the 2025 movie release, Johansson had a 'full circle moment' she had with her twin brother, and this is yet another sweet sibling story from the actress. The Lost in Translation alum is a birthday twin to longtime co-star Mark Ruffalo and even has a Black Widow look-alike on TikTok. However, Scarlett Johansson has a real twin brother of her own named Hunter, who's apparently a huge Jurassic Park fan. While at Rebirth's New York premiere, Scarlett told E! News just how much of a fan her twin bro is of the sci-fi thriller franchise: He was the loudest audience member. I knew that would be the case because he loves Jurassic so much and was like, there for it. It's incredibly sweet to hear that Scarlett Johansson has such immense support for her. Also, how cool must it be for Hunter to know that his sibling is now part of such an immense franchise? Of course, made the event a truly special moment for both of the siblings, however, was the fact that both siblings grew up loving the blockbuster dinosaur franchise. As Scarlett later said: He would've been there either way because he's a fan and the movie is so explosive. He was literally orchestrating the John Williams music and was just like, so loud. That was really fun because we saw the movie together when we were 9 or 10 in the theater, and here we are in this full circle moment. It's kind of crazy. While I definitely love this affection and shared fandom between siblings, I'm always delighted when Scarlett Johansson reminds us that she's a twin. It's a little celebrity tidbit that's easy to forget and still amuses a person when they're reminded of it. While we've seen celebrity siblings working side-by-side like the Olsen Twins or Tia and Tamera Mowry, some stars have twins who aren't in the entertainment business. For instance, Rami Malek's twin brother or Jon Heder's brother aren't working actors. I think it'd be cool if Scarlett and Hunter Johansson were to appear on screen together. However, given Scarlett's career, I'm glad that they can still share a moment like the one they had at the premiere. I also love the notion of Hunter orchestrating the great John Williams' music. Honestly, I'm sure plenty of fans would probably have a somewhat similarly visceral reaction to hearing that iconic Jurassic Park theme song. Scarlett Johansson may not bring up the fact that she's a twin all that often. However, her anecdotes about her sibling never disappoint whenever they come into play. I'm hopeful that both of the Johanssons will hold onto the memory of that cool-sounding New York premiere for years to come. At present, though, fans can check out Jurassic World Rebirth for themselves, as it's currently playing in theaters nationwide.

Scarlett Johansson Says She No Longer Gets Cast For Her 'Desirability Or The Male Gaze': 'Something Has Shifted'
Scarlett Johansson has opened up about her fight to free herself from being labeled as a Hollywood "sex symbol" and getting cast solely because of her physical appearance. During a recent interview, she stated that her breakout role in the movie "Lost in Translation" put her in a box, so that she was solely getting cast for her "desirability." However, that all changed for the actress, as Scarlett Johansson landed roles in a wide variety of movies that showcased her acting capabilities, not just her looks. Johansson is undeniably one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and is currently the highest-grossing actress of all time, with a total box office earnings of $14 billion. However, reaching this point took a while for the Marvel star, who revealed that she had to fight her way out of getting cast only in roles made for the "male gaze." This meant she had to turn down some roles, despite being a young and hungry actress. In a chat with The Sunday Times, Johansson said, "When I was younger, a lot of the roles I was offered, or I went for, had their ambitions or character arcs revolving around their own desirability, or the male gaze, or a male-centred story. That is less frequent, though something has shifted." She then noted that things have changed for the better for young women in the film industry now, partly due to the presence of more positive role models and successful women in top positions. To ensure she didn't get permanently typecast in Hollywood for her "desirability," Johansson revealed that she turned down roles she felt were "deeply unfulfilling" and would instead wait for parts that gave her the chance to prove her abilities as an actress. She noted that doing this came with the fear that she might become "irrelevant" at "any moment." However, for Johansson, playing the long game and being selective of what roles she accepted was key to her success. "I just waited. I had to become comfortable with the idea that it could take some time," Johansson said. "Which is hard when you're a young actor, but at that time I didn't have any children." The actress's patience and determination ultimately paid off, as she now boasts a diverse range of movie roles that showcase her talent and versatility. From the commercially successful movies in which she has appeared, such as "Avengers: Endgame," to critically acclaimed films like "Marriage Story" and "Jojo Rabbit," Johansson has done it all. More recently, Johansson made her directorial debut with the movie "Eleanor The Great," and is set to star in the upcoming blockbuster "Jurassic World Rebirth." In an interview with E! News, Johansson revealed that working on "Jurassic World Rebirth" brought her closer to her co-stars, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Rupert Friend in more ways than one. "One of the best parts of making a movie is the family that you develop while you're shooting," she shared. "We didn't have much time to rehearse on this film," Johansson explained. "So just having the opportunity to spend as much time as we could doing stuff that was enjoyable was important." The on-set conditions made the camaraderie between the movie's cast members even more vital. Filming in Malta under sweltering conditions, with temperatures reaching 103°F and a stifling 90 percent humidity, reportedly tested their endurance. To cope with the extreme climate and encounters with nature, the cast would unwind with group dinners and laughs. "It helps to have some nice memories to look forward to," Johansson said, "to daydream about when you're deep in mangrove water with poisonous snakes." Johansson's love for "Jurassic Park" is so strong that when she learned of a new film in the works, she didn't hesitate to reach out to Steven Spielberg himself to pitch herself. "I had a meeting with him and I don't actually know if he knew the depths of my 'Jurassic' fandom," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "But I'm hoping that no one explained it to him too thoroughly because it maybe would've come off as being a little too much." However, she admitted that Spielberg was thrilled when she expressed what being part of the franchise meant to her. "Although knowing Steven now, he was excited when I shared with him how much it would mean to me to play any part in 'Jurassic.' I could've played it cooler, and maybe I wouldn't have gotten it," she admitted. In her chat with E! News, Johansson shared whether her daughter, Rose, 10, whom she shares with her ex-husband Romain Dauriac, will be allowed to watch the movie. "I've been talking to some other 'Jurassic' fans and they say this is the scariest one," she said, "but I would let my daughter see it." She added: "It's still appropriate for the family. You just gotta watch it through the crack in your fingers." Reflecting on her own experience with the iconic franchise, Johansson recalled: "I was 10 years old in the theater and part of the impression it left on me was the jump scares, the laughs, but the terrors for sure." She noted: "That's part of what's so great about 'Jurassic.' It's thrilling in all ways: visually and also emotionally."

‘Biggest mystery' in cinematic history still unanswered
It's been more than 20 years since Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson joined forces for Sofia Coppola's award-winning film Lost in Translation. And yet, in the two decades since the movie's release, the mystery surrounding the pivotal final scene has never been revealed. Today, it remains one of the most endearing movie mysteries of all time. What did Murray's character Bob Harris whisper to Johansson's Charlotte during their final encounter? Only the co-stars, and the filmmaker herself know the answer. In the blockbuster, widely regarded as one of the best travel movies of all time, Murray plays a faded film star who forms a fleeting, intimate bond while in Tokyo with Johansson's character, a disillusioned young Yale graduate and newlywed. The film was a bona fide hit, earning $US118.7 million on a $4 million budget. It received four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Murray. Coppola ultimately took home the award for Best Original Screenplay. And yet, that final whispered line seems to be what viewers still obsess over. Over the years, film critics and movie buffs have attempted to decode the parting thoughts of Murray's character at the end of the pair's whirlwind stay in the Japanese capital. But the answer has never been divulged. The most popular guess, which a YouTuber went viral for back in 2007, is: 'I have to be leaving, but I won't let that come between us, okay?' Other stabs in the dark from cinema detectives include: 'Promise me, that the next thing you do, is go up to that man and tell him the truth.' 'I just want you to know I will never forget this okay?' 'When John [Johansson's character's husband] is ready for his next business trip, go up to that man and tell him the truth, okay?' Others on Reddit have weighed in over the years, with one commenting, 'It's supposed to be ambiguous, a private moment just between the two characters.' Another wrote: 'How people hear anything but 'tell him the truth, okay' at the end of the phrase is bizarre.' Yet another couch critic said: 'You are supposed to decide what he whispers. I don't believe it is scripted.' There were plenty of jokes, too. 'You'll become Black Widow one day,' one person quipped. Director Sofia Coppola herself weighed in on the mystery on the film's 15th anniversary, simply stating: 'That thing Bill whispers to Scarlett was never intended to be anything. 'I was going to figure out later what to say and add it in and then we never did.' Meanwhile, the co-stars have continued to enjoy the prolonged secret over the years, without actually giving it away. The Cadyshak star, now 74, appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show back in March to promote his movie Riff Raff, however wound up reminiscing about the hit romantic comedy-drama from 2003. 'Well there was a girl, she was a teenager back then her name was Scarlett Johansson back then,' the comedian told Barrymore. 'She was only 17 when she made that movie, 17 years old and it was beautiful to make the movie with the two of them [Coppola and Johansson].' The host then hit up Murray about the unforgettable whisper scene. 'I love that you guys had the confidence to leave the film on the note of mystery,' she said. 'Well that was an inspired moment, that happened in the moment, it happened in the moment,' Murray said vaguely, before adding, 'there were three of us that had the same moment.' Despite whispering in Barrymore's ear for added flair, Murray concluded by saying: 'That was a moment of seeing, 'This is going to happen and it's going to be even better because we're never going to know'.' Right … Similarly, Johansson weighed in back in 2023 around the film's 20-year anniversary. 'Oh my god, that sounds pretty profound,' the Avengers star replied when hit up by Yahoo Entertainment about the exact transcript of the infamous moment. 'Probably way more profound than what was actually said!' Listening to the internet's answer a second time, she answered less confidently: 'Maybe? I don't know about that. I give it, like, a B-minus.' Of course, Johansson declined to reveal the exact sentence. And so, the mystery lives on.

Scarlett Johansson Has Been On Movie Sets Since Age 9. Someone Asked Her About The '10,000 Hours' It Takes To Become An Expert At A Craft, And She Did Not Hold Back
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. When Scarlett Johansson was 9 years old, she made her feature film debut in the 1994 movie North, and for the last three decades, she's been working consistently. So, obviously, she's put in way more than 10,000 hours of work. Now, as she prepares to release her projects on the 2025 movie schedule, she's sharing her feelings on the number of hours it takes to become an expert, and she did not hold back. With the exception of 2000 and 2020, Scarlett Johansson has worked every year since her on-screen debut in 1994. And according to Malcolm Gladwell, it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve a level of expertise. I think it's safe to say Johansson surpassed that number a very long time ago, and she agrees, as she told THR: Whatever the 10,000 hours part of it is [to master something], I've quadrupled that. I grew up on sets, and I'm a huge sucker for efficiency. Even in my job as an actor, I can read a call sheet and tell you exactly what's going to make us fall behind and what we'll owe the next day. If you take one look at Scarlett Johansson's list of best movies, this claim will immediately be backed up. From Oscar-nominated darlings like 2003's Lost in Translation as well as 2019's Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit to blockbuster smashes like Avengers, Avengers: Endgame, or any of the other great Marvel movies she's done, she has 100% accumulated more than 10,000 hours of work. She also has a resume that cements her as one of the most successful actors working right now. For reference, 10,000 hours equates to about 416 days or roughly a year and change of time. Scarlett Johansson has consistently worked for 31 years. So, it's safe to say she's far beyond your basic expert level. As she said, she's at a point in her career where she can simply read a call sheet and know how long something will take; that's how in tune with the process she is. Now, she's taking that expertise behind the scenes, too. That's right, this year the film Eleanor the Great will come out, and it's directed by Scarlett Johansson. This marks the first feature film the actress has ever helmed, and it's a thrilling jump in her career. The movie stars June Squibb, and while chatting with the outlet about her director, she gushed about Johansson's natural ability behind the camera: With her knowledge as an actress, she knew immediately what I was doing, where I was going and how I was shifting everything. That's wonderful because you don't often have that. I've worked with wonderful directors that don't have that kind of knowledge like Scarlett does. It only seems natural that the 95-year-old actress would have glowing things to say about her director. The Black Widow star has worked on tons of different projects and knows the ins and outs of the business, it makes perfect sense that all her work would translate over to directing. On top of directing, Johansson is also still getting her acting hours in. This year, Jurassic World Rebirth will be released on July 2, and both the actress and her co-stars have been hyping up the film and comparing it to Jurassic Park. She's also set to star in a Wes Anderson film, The Phoenician Scheme, which hits theaters on June 6. So, not only is she adding to her 10,000+ hours, she's also showing off her range as a performer. Overall, I think Scarlett Johansson's words ring true for her career, and she's proven over and over again that she's one of the best. Thankfully, she has no plans of slowing down either, so we'll get to keep watching her expert work for years to come.
