Exclusive: Rahul Bhat on challenges of shooting at Kumbh for his Hollywood debut

Rahul Bhat unveiled the first look of his upcoming film, 'Lost and Found in Kumbh', at the Cannes Film Festival 2025 on May 18. The film would mark the actor's Hollywood who was last seen in the Netflix series 'The Black Warrant', visited Cannes for the third time. In an exclusive interview with India Today Digital, the actor shared details of the Hollywood film which was shot in Kumbh during the Mela. He not only shared the experience of the shoot, but also added that the film would be a light-hearted comedy - a genre that Bhat hasn't been a part of for a long am playing an Indian professor who lives in England and has a British wife and a son, from the marriage," Rahul told us when we asked him about the film. "He comes with his wife and son to Prayagraj because his father has called him. But, when he reaches Prayagraj, his father is missing but his ex-wife, who is an Indian, is present with their son. He is in a fix with these two wives and two sons and they all go to search for the father. Now, these two kids are lost in the search and the film is about finding these two kids. It's a light-hearted comedy."So, was it a challenge shooting in Kumbh? Bhat shared, "It was a nightmare shooting in Kumbh, because it was hot, and there were half a billion people there. It was mayhem. But I must say that it was very well-organised because managing so many people at the same time is no joke. Shooting there was a challenge, but the producers did a great job. It was a professional team, which is why we could carry it out. The local government also really helped. They gave us a place to shoot on the bank of Ganga."advertisementHe added, "There was a lot of noise and, because it was a sync-sound film, it was very difficult. But the sound designer is also a great guy, who was a part of 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' (2008 film). The fact that people gather around the moment they spot a camera, was a challenge. We did a lot of guerrilla shooting and organised a lot of things - like cordoning off an area. So yeah, we managed a great film." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rahul Bhat (@itsrahulbhat)Rahul Bhat also hopes that the real locations would elevate the film by adding a touch of authenticity."Kyunki kya hota hai, asli location aur asli cheezon ka maza hi alag hota hai (the effect of shooting in real location hits differently). You can really smell that honestly in the film."Will the film be released in India? "It's an English film completely and I don't know what kind of market is there in India for this kind of film," Bhat Bhat attended the Cannes Film Festival for the third time. He had previously attended it in 2013 for 'Ugly' and in 2023 for 'Kennedy'.Must Watch

Rahul Bhat on Kennedy release delay: It hurts, hope it releases soon

Rahul Bhat walked the Cannes Film Festival for the third time this year for his upcoming film, 'Lost and Found in Kumbh', which would also mark his Hollywood debut. Before this, he had attended the festival in 2023 for the Anurag Kashyap film, 'Kennedy'. The film, which also features Sunny Leone, has not yet been released in Indian theatres despite earning accolades at several film festivals across the globe and in India. Speaking exclusively to India Today Digital, the actor shared that the fact the film has not yet been released hurts him and also expressed hope, claiming that there is a strong possibility for its release this about 'Kennedy' release, Rahul Bhat told India Today Digital, "I hope it releases soon. They are saying that it should release this year. It's a tragedy because.. pata nahi kya kuch log aate hai, fir woh naukriya chhodte hai fir dusre log aate hai (God knows what people come, then they leave, then other people join) [then the release gets stuck]. It's crazy."Bhat added, "There's a possibility that it will be released this year. We worked so hard on that film. It hurts, because what is acting all about if people don't see? Why do we make movies or art? For people to appreciate it, see it, and tell you the good things, criticise you but tell you something! The whole purpose of art is to reach people. If it doesn't reach people, then what's the point?"advertisement The film has also been loved by people all across the globe. "It's gone all over the world, and it has been received so well, with a thumping response. It had been to Cannes and within minutes the tickets were sold. In Toronto too, tickets were sold the moment they opened it. Here in Mumbai, I think they said in one-minute tickets were sold. In Kolkata, 2000 people were inside and 3000 were outside! There was a lathi charge. In producero ke kaan mein kuch sunai nahi padta hai ya kya pata nahi (I don't know if this news even reached the producer), it's crazy," Rahul Bhat also claimed that the film fraternity complains that the audience does not turn up in theatres, while offbeat films like 'Kennedy' do not even get a fair chance. "Fir bolte hai theatre mein aate nahi log. Agar theatre mein filmein lagaoge nahi, toh kahan se aayengein? (It is being said that the audience does not come to the theatres. If you do not put up different films, why will they come?) They like to play the same kind of films in theatres, and then they complain that people are not coming. Then these big theatre chains now sell tickets for thousands of rupees, and they think people will come," Bhat also felt that India should have theatres, especially for indie films. "Everywhere in the world, in the west, there are small theatres for offbeat films; there is a certain kind of market there for such kinds of films. There's nothing like this in India, but hopefully, there will be someday."Back in April this year, director Anurag Kashyap also hinted at the film's release this year. "After the screening of the film at the 10th Indie Meme Film Festival in Austin, Texas, he stated, "Back home, my producers are working towards the release of the film, and it should happen soon."Kashyap had, in January, also spoken up about the delay in the film's release, claiming that it now lies in the hands of people who are inexperienced. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter India, he said, "I have made five films that are lying unreleased. Where is Kennedy? And whose hands is Kennedy in? It's in the hands of some people who've never made films before. The people who made 'Kennedy' in the studio are all gone. The people who are there, the directive given to them is to up the share prices, generate profits, cost recovery... That's all there is. Nobody is interested in films. It doesn't matter if 'Kennedy' went to Cannes; it doesn't matter if it had such a massive reception at festivals. Forget outside India, they've seen the reception in India, but where is the film?"Fans in India are also eagerly waiting for the film's Watch

"Log bolte hain achi filmein banate nahin hain, toh jab achi film aap dabbe mein rakhoge to kya hoga(People complain they don't make good films but when good films would be canceled then what will happen)? I can't understand what does it take to wake up some people," he said. The Black Warrant actor pointed out how Kennedy is one of the most travelled films all over the world. He cited names of the countries including Toronto, Australia and New York Film Festival being the latest one where he has been nominated. "It is you know uski jo mohabbat hai usko is city se mohabbat, vo jo uska ek nazar hai ek uska point of view hai city ka (It is his love for this city and his point of view of this city) and Kennedy is also one of the point of views Anurag's you know... it's a love letter to the city," he further added. On a concluding note, Bhat shared that he has heard the film will be released soon.
