Nets GM Sean Marks discusses process for first round of 2025 NBA Draft
NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks made some surprising moves for the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft while the team made history for the amount of first-round picks made. Marks not only kept all five picks despite the public perception that at least one of the picks would be dealt, but he also approached the Draft in an interesting way. "I give a lot of credit to, not only our scouts, but our performance and coaching staff who spent a lot of time doing their due diligence over the last couple of months and our scouts the best part of the last year or two watching these guys all over the world," Marks said following the conclusion of the first round. One of the more shocking moves that Marks and the front office made was selecting BYU guard Egor Demin with the eighth overall pick. "I think first and foremost was the IQ. We looked at how he played the game, how he moved the ball, involved his teammates, saw one or two plays ahead," Marks said when asked what led to the selection of Demin. "Obviously, the size for his position is great when you've got a 6'8' combo guard, point guard, but he can move and play off the ball too. We enjoyed watching him at BYU and then we had multiple opportunities to see him in Brooklyn up close and personal and get to meet him." What made the Demin selection surprising was due to the fact that the Russian was expected to be taken either in the late Lottery or possibly closer to 20th overall. HoopsHype's Cyro Asseo de Choch had Demin being taken by the San Antonio Spurs with the 14th overall pick so it's possible that Marks and company wanted to make sure they took Demin before anyone else could. Brooklyn's next pick after No. 8 was No. 19 so it would have been unlikely for Demin to fall that far down the board. "I think his defense is great, how he guards pick-and-rolls. I think that was great length. So, there's a lot of attributes there," Marks continued while speaking about Demin and the theme for the rest of the class. "And obviously all these guys are untapped. I'm just thrilled to get these guys in front of our coaching staff with Jordi and the development coaches and get them out there and really see what they can become."
