How social media reacted to Drake Powell's 2025 NBA Draft selection
The former Tar Heel was a late first-round selection in Wednesday's NBA Draft.
When Drake Powell declared for the NBA Draft, mixed emotions ensued. Powell proved his defense was next-level, but despite a few offensive outbursts, another year in college would likely cement Powell as a Lottery Pick.
As the first round in Wednesday's NBA Draft reached the 20s, Powell waited to hear his name called. It finally happened – with the 22nd overall pick, the Atlanta Hawks chose Powell.
The Brooklyn Nets own the rights to Powell's selection, though, so Powell will actually play his rookie NBA season in New York
Wednesday night marked the second consecutive year UNC had a player drafted, with Harrison Ingram taken 48th overall by the San Antonio Spurs. In addition, Powell is the first former Tar Heel chosen in the first round since 2022, when Walker Kessler (finished his career with Auburn) also went 22nd overall, but to the Utah Jazz.
Brooklyn, once a promising team with the likes of superstars James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, now sports a young roster with plenty of talent. The Nets don't have a clear-cut starting small forward, so Powell should slide in nicely next to Ziaire Williams.
Powell brings defensive intensity and a hidden scoring ability to Brooklyn, which complements Powell with stars like D'Angelo Russell, Cam Thomas and former Tar Heel Cameron Johnson. Powell averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, but as mentioned previously, his 29 steals and 25 blocks highlighted his defensive abilities.
