$55K each? Group of 18 wins $1 million lotto prize in B.C.

The B.C. Lottery Corporation logo is shown in this file photo. (CTV News) A group of 18 colleagues on Vancouver Island will split a $1 million lottery prize after one of their tickets was selected in a recent Lotto 6/49 draw. Victoria resident Georgena Watmough and her group took home the guaranteed prize in the July 9 Gold Ball Draw, according to the B.C. Lottery Corporation. Split 18 ways, $1 million works out to $55,555.56 per person, though BCLC did not say how the group plans to share the money in its news release Wednesday. The winning ticket was purchased in Sooke, at the Chevron on Sooke Road at Church Road, according to BCLC. Watmough told the lottery corporation she was most excited to share the news with her kids, who didn't think it was real. 'It's surreal,' she told BCLC. A guaranteed prize of at least $1 million is awarded in every Lotto 6/49 draw. If the gold ball is drawn, the winner receives the Gold Ball Jackpot, which starts at $10 million and can grow as high as $68 million. The odds of winning the guaranteed prize depend on the number of tickets sold. The odds of winning the classic Lotto 6/49 jackpot of $5 million are approximately one in 14 million. BCLC says lottery players in the province have taken home more than $46 million from Lotto 6/49 so far in 2025.

Ontario couple vows to play Lotto 6/49 for a year — then wins $2.5M jackpot

Blaine and Evelyne started a one-year lottery plan and hit the jackpot halfway through Last fall, Blaine Parrington and Evelyne Rainville made a simple pact: they'd play Lotto 6/49 every Wednesday for one year and see what happened. Six months in, the Sturgeon Falls, Ont., couple found themselves $2.5 million richer. The couple's $3 Lotto 6/49 ticket matched the winning numbers in the April 2, 2025 Classic Draw. Their ticket was one of two that split the $5 million jackpot. While the retirees have been casual lottery players for nearly 15 years, dabbling in both jackpot and Instant games, this was their first major win. 'I scanned our Lotto 6/49 ticket on the store's ticket checker and saw the 'Big Winner' message. When I asked the store clerk to validate our ticket, the lottery terminal froze. An OLG representative called and confirmed we'd won $2.5 million,' said Parrington. 'I was amazed and shocked. It was a feeling that can't be explained into words.' With happy tears in his eyes, he rushed home to share the life-changing news with his loved ones. 'I was astonished,' Rainville said, recalling the moment she found out they were now millionaires. 'That afternoon, we had family over and told them about our winning ticket. Everyone was very happy for us, including our son, whom we video chatted with and sent a picture of the validation slip. It was a surreal and exceptionally overwhelming moment.' Parrington also shared the exciting news with his daughter, whose reaction was one he won't forget. 'I reached out to my daughter, but she was busy and had to call me back,' said Parrington. 'After seeing the text message I'd sent her, she returned my call. When I answered, she was singing the Barenaked Ladies song, 'If I Had $1,000,000.' It was such a wholesome moment.' The funny response was a reminder of how surreal this win felt for Parrington and Rainville — and how much joy it brought their entire family. With the prize now in hand, the couple is looking forward to a more relaxed and fulfilling chapter of life. 'I enjoy fishing, so I'm looking to buy a new boat,' said Parringon. 'I'd like to upgrade my car, and we'd love to plan a trip within Canada to see the Rocky Mountains,' added Rainville. 'We'll also share this prize with our children and grandchildren, complete some renovations, and make some investments for our future.' The duo's winning numbers were 18, 26, 35, 40, 43, 47, and the ticket was purchased at RX Drug Mart on King Street in Sturgeon Falls, Ont. Lotto 6/49 gives players a chance to win two jackpots every Wednesday and Saturday for $3 per play. The Classic Draw offers a fixed $5 million jackpot, while the Gold Ball Draw guarantees at least $1 million — or a growing jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb past $60 million. From a playful weekly tradition to a multi-million dollar win, Parrington and Rainville are proof that sometimes all it takes is one good idea and a little bit of luck. ‘Doesn't feel real': Calgarian wins $5M on Lotto 6-49

A Calgary man has won a whopping $5 million on the lottery. Mike Meldrum's windfall came from the June 18 Lotto 6-49 draw. The Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) announced the win last month, encouraging whoever bought the ticket to come forward to claim their prize. 'I saw someone had won in Calgary, but I hadn't checked my ticket yet,' Meldrum said in a news release. 'When I first told my wife, she didn't believe me,' he added. 'She told me to send her the numbers so she could check online herself.' Meldrum says he's been buying Lotto 6-49 tickets weekly for 35 years. Now, he's in the process of determining how to spend the money. 'Our cars are about ten years old, so we're thinking maybe new vehicles,' he said. 'I have some decisions to make about continuing work, too.' 'It doesn't feel real.' Meldrum purchased his winning ticket from 7-Eleven on Mount McKenzie Drive S.E. He won his prize by matching the following six numbers: 8, 14, 20, 25, 30, and 38.

B.C. man to plan dream Alaska fishing trip after $1M lottery win

Mackenzie resident Sim Chua will embark on his dream fishing trip to Alaska after winning $1 Million from Lotto 6/49. When B.C. man Sim Chua first found out he was going to be $1 million richer, he had only one thing on his mind – the picturesque rivers of Alaska and their abundant salmon and trout populations. The Mackenzie resident and avid fisherman had checked his winning ticket at the lotto kiosk inside the Mackenzie Mall on Mackenzie Boulevard, the same place he had bought it from prior to the May 14 Lotto 6/49 draw. 'I passed it to the retailer,' recalled Chua when detailing his win to the B.C. Lottery Corporation. 'Before scanning, she was telling me about how someone won $1 million in Mackenzie. Then she scanned the ticket and then said, 'Hey, it's you!'' Chua said he was most excited to share the news with his sister, whose ear-splitting response was one of pure surprise. 'She was just screaming so much on the phone. She couldn't believe it!' Still coming to terms with news of the life-changing win, Chua says the knowledge that he is now a millionaire still hasn't quite sunk in. 'I don't know what to do with myself,' he said. 'It's still unreal to me.' One thing he does know for certain is how the cash will be spent. Chua plans to use some of his winnings to purchase a new car, and to visit his ultimate vacation destination of Alaska. The 'dream trip' will involve plenty of fly fishing, he said. The odds of winning the main Lotto 6/49 jackpot – which requires matching all six numbers drawn without using the bonus number – are approximately one in 14 million, according to the BCLC. The odds of winning a guaranteed prize of $1 million or more in the Gold Ball Draw depend on the number of tickets sold.
