Two Egyptian films awarded at Casablanca Arab Film Festival

Two Egyptian films, The Brink of Dreams and Love Bites, won awards at the sixth edition of the Casablanca Arab Film Festival (13-20 June). Nada Riyadh and Ayman El-Amir directed The Brink of Dreams, which received the Jury Prize in the Feature Film Competition. Love Bites, written and directed by Mahmoud Zain, received a Special Mention in the Short Film Competition. The Brink of Dreams follows the story of an all-female Coptic group that formed a theatre troupe to perform plays inspired by Upper Egyptian folklore in their small village. The troupe aims to raise awareness about important issues, like early marriage, domestic violence, and girls' education. The film stars Majda Masoud, Haidi Sameh, Monika Youssef, Marina Samir, Myriam Nassar, Lydia Haroun, and Youstina Samir. In 2024, The Brink of Dreams won the Golden Eye Documentary Prize at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The film garnered numerous other awards from international festivals, the latest being Best Feature at the 15th edition of Malmö Arab Film Festival (29 April - 5 May). Love Bites is a 12-minute drama starring Sedky Sakhr, Sohila Alanwar, Nadia Hassan, and Mahmoud Yehia. The film tells the story of Hayam, an unmarried 20-year-old girl, who passes away. Her brothers, Zaher and Murad, discover love bites on her neck and chest just before the body washing. This fact hinders the completion of the body washing practice for fear of a scandal. Love Bites premiered at the Aswan International Women's Film Festival (2-7 May 2025), receiving a Special Mention in the Short Film Competition. The film was then screened at the Rotterdam Arab Film Festival (28 May–1 June). This is not the first time Egyptian films have garnered recognition at the Casablanca Arab Film Festival. In 2024, the film Maqsoom was awarded the Best Main Actress prize at the Feature Film Competition, and I Promise You Paradise won the Best Short Film Award at the festival's fifth edition. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

MAD Solutions brings six short films to Rotterdam Arab Film Festival

Each of these six films is represented internationally by MAD World, with MAD Distribution handling sales across the Arab World. MAD Solutions is showcasing a lineup of six short films at this year's Rotterdam Arab Film Festival, which runs through June 1. The selected works—Last Nights of Summer, Love Bites, Madonna, Upshot, Nya and Born a Celebrity—hail from across the Arab region and delve into themes of family, identity, freedom and memory. Opening the slate is Last Nights of Summer, a story following three cousins—Farah, Rana and Leila—who reunite at their childhood home in Jordan two years after their grandfather's death. Written and directed by Yasser, the film examines the subtle transformations in relationships over time and distance. It stars Tara Emad, who also serves as executive producer, alongside Shahd El Shater and Farah Aboughattas, with cinematography by Mohamed Ashraf Koushi and music by Donia Wael. Following is Love Bites, a tense family drama centered on two brothers who struggle to agree on how to prepare their deceased sister's body after discovering unexpected marks that could spark scandal among waiting mourners. The cast includes Sedky Sakhr, Mahmoud Zain, Sohila Alanwar, Nadia Hassan, Mahmoud Yehia, Sara Alaaeldin and Rowan Alaa Eldin. The film features cinematography by Moamen Alameldin and editing by Mohamed Mamdouh. In Madonna, the action shifts to a monastery in Egypt, where the theft of an archaeological artifact puts the abbots under pressure. Tensions rise between Father Maurice and Francis, and suspicion falls on Suad, the chef, who is struggling to secure surgery for her daughter. A dramatic turn shifts the stakes entirely. Directed by John Fareed Zaki and co-written with Abanoub Nabil, the film stars Karim Kassem, Abd El-Aziz Makhyoun and George Sassine, with visuals by cinematographer Filopater Morad and editing by Sara Abdullah. The psychological drama Upshot unfolds on a secluded farm in Gaza, where Suleiman and Lubna have isolated themselves in the aftermath of personal tragedy. Their fragile peace is disrupted by the arrival of a stranger, triggering a descent into unresolved grief and memory. Directed by Maha Haj, the film is a co-production between Palestine, Italy and France, and features performances by Mohammed Bakri, Areen Omari and Amer Hlehel. Offering a child's-eye view of conflict, Nya tells the story of seven-year-old Anya, living in a 1994 Algerian suburb. As civil unrest creeps closer, her carefree world begins to fray. Directed by Imene Ayadi, the film features a standout performance by Melissa Benyahia and captures the quiet erosion of childhood innocence against a backdrop of war. Closing the selection is Born a Celebrity, a thoughtful character study of Kamel, a 25-year-old Palestinian man overwhelmed by the attention of his tightly-knit community. As he seeks space to define his own identity, his quiet rebellion becomes a moving meditation on freedom and social pressure. The film is written, directed, edited and co-produced by Luay Awwad with Nour Abukamal, and stars Munther Bannourah and Khaled Masso. All six films are represented internationally by MAD World, with MAD Distribution handling Arab world sales.

Deff Leppard's Rick Savage's son becomes model as he fronts huge fashion campaign

Def Leppard star Rick Savage has launched a fashion line alongside his son - with the pair making waves in the fashion world days after Madonna's son hit out at 'nepo babies' The son of a an iconic rock band has become the latest child of a star to wriggle into the spotlight as a model. Music fans will be aware of the chart topping band Def Leppard. The group, fronted by singer Joe Elliott, has been churning out hits since 1979 with major smashes including Pour Some Sugar on Me, Let's Get Rocked, and Love Bites. The other members of the band include drummer Rick Allen, guitarist Phil Collen, fellow guitarist Vivian Campbell - and bassist Rick Savage, who also belts out backing vocals. ‌ Rick has been married to Paige Hannon since 2004 and together the couple have three children - including son Scott Savage who is now making waves as an emerging model. Scott's step into the spotlight has been encouraged, no less, by his father as the boys have teamed up for a new campaign. ‌ Overnight Angels Crew is a new fashion brand which is a joint venture between Rick and Scott - and the pair have been doing their best to show off the chic collection of sport-tinged designs. The official Instagram page of the brand has shown the father and son dressed up in items from the collection. One snap showed Soctt sporting a bomber jacket while posing against a wall with his chart-topping dad. A caption alongside the image stated: "@scottsavage__ rocking our iconic College Bomber Jacket—where timeless style meets modern sustainability." Sharing more details of the design, the caption added: "Crafted from 100% recycled polyester with quilted padding, it features a ribbed collar, hem, and cuffs, plus two side pockets and a snap dome closure. Designed for comfort and built to last." The designs appear to have been an immediate hit with fans - with one commenting on the post: "Nice picture of father and son. I'm so syched that the two of you are working together. Ild love to see more of the rick savage line too. The o.a.c. rocks could use a few more pieces for women though. Chill @scottsavage__ your doing great!!!" The official Overnight Angels Crew website shines a light on the origins of the brand. The About Us page states: "The brand name was born from a place of Savage's nostalgia, inspired by Ian Hunter's title track on his 1977 album, Overnight Angels. ‌ "It was this Summer of '77 that Savage was at a crossroads in his own life. Def Leppard formed that same year, and Savage chose to pay homage to that poignant time in his life with a brand he hopes will inspire others with its gritty attitude and reminiscence." Proving that the rock star and his son are taking a hands-on approach to business, the statement continues: "Both Rick and his son Scott worked closely with Nick Holland, the go to fashion expert for all Rockstar alike. ‌ "Holland founded the successful clothing line Pretty Green with Oasis' Liam Gallagher. He brings with him a wealth of experience, bringing to life a luxurious brand grounded in the disruptive and evocative nature of the designs." The brand offers a wide range of apparel for sale - from caps to shorts, hoodies to bandanas. Price points range - with the bomber jacket modelled by Scott retailing at £245 and sweatshirts costing around £120. Rick and Scott's venture has made waves days after comments made by Madonna's son, Rocco Ritchie, raised eyebrows as he mouthed off about nepo babies. The 24-year-old artist, who is also the son of director Guy Ritchie, mouthed off to Fantastic Man magazine. He said: 'I always think it's funny that back in the day, some of the most beautiful cathedrals that were ever built would be built by generation after generation of the same family. And now, if you are born from a family – and I'm not saying this is wrong – you start looking at nepo babies and they are not the most interesting bunch, are they?'
