FIFA Club World Cup fuels hot streak for Charlotte hotels
Thousands of fans flocked to Uptown this summer for the FIFA Club World Cup. Why it matters: Not only did it shine an international spotlight on the city, but it also packed the city's hotels, boosting Charlotte's economy. Catch up quick: Bank of America Stadium hosted four matches between June 22-30, including soccer royalty Real Madrid. By the numbers: Hotel occupancy in Mecklenburg County increased 3.5% year-over-year for that period, according to the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. In Uptown, hotel rates ranged from $183.67 to $248.17 on match days, and hotel occupancy peaked at 93.9%, per CRVA. Like other cities, Charlotte uses taxes generated from hotel stays and restaurant and bar tabs for projects that bring in tourism dollars, such as stadium or convention center renovations. What they're saying: "Events like the FIFA Club World Cup don't just bring people to Charlotte — they elevate our global profile, create lasting impact, and generate measurable benefits for our visitor economy," CRVA CEO Steve Bagwell said in a statement. Between the lines: Though business travel and in-office work haven't returned to their pre-pandemic levels, leisure travel in Uptown has surged. The big picture: Charlotte has been on a roll with massive events this year, from the ACC Tournament in March, to Lovin' Life Music Festival, Kendrick Lamar, Shakira and Metallica concerts and the PGA Championship in May, plus back-to-back nights of Savannah Bananas games at Bank of America Stadium in June.

Lovin' Life Music Fest evacuated due to severe weather, lightning
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Day 2 of the Lovin' Life Music Festival in Uptown was cut short due to severe weather. Shortly after 5 p.m., officials announced they were evacuating the festival grounds immediately. Spectators are asked to seek shelter at the 7th Street parking deck. CMPD evacuates Lovin' Life Music Fest due to severe weather
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police evacuated the Lovin' Life Music Fest on Saturday afternoon in light of severe storms. Severe thunderstorms rolled into Mecklenburg County around 4:30 p.m. And the severe thunderstorm warnings ended around 5:30 p.m. FORECAST: Tracking strong to severe storms Saturday PM CMPD evacuated the Lovin' Life Music Festival in Uptown as lightning approached. They asked spectators to seek shelter in nearby parking garages. Lovin' Life posted on social media before 5 p.m. asking people to evacuate festival grounds and go to the 7th Street parking garage. Showers, storms could threaten Lovin' Life Music Festival
The risk for showers and storms will increase in Charlotte as we approach the weekend and could impact events like the Lovin' Life Music Festival and the Kendrick Lamar concert at Bank of America Stadium. Lovin' Life Music Fest announces daily schedule for 2025 lineup Friday's storm chance is isolated with a pop-up shower or storms possible during the afternoon and evening out ahead of a cold front. Fortunately, the day will not be a washout. The best chance for scattered showers and storms across the area will be Saturday afternoon and evening. Heavy rainfall will be the primary risk with any storms that pass by. However, there's also a low risk for a strong to severe storm, with damaging wind gusts being the biggest concern.
