Lovlina Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen Return To Indian Team For World Championships

Star boxer Nikhat Zareen and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain were on Thursday named in India's team for the World Championships, scheduled to take place in Liverpool in September. The 20-member team was finalised after a week-long assessment at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala. The tournament, to be held from September 4 to 14, will be the first World Championships organised by the new governing body, World Boxing. It will feature competitions in 10 weight classes for men and women, marking the first time male and female boxers will compete in an Olympics-style event for the title of World Boxing Champion. Both Zareen and Borgohain missed the women's nationals in March. The former, a two-time world champion, was injured at the time, while Borgohain wasn't sent by the Assam state unit because of internal federation disputes. Nikhat and Lovlina returned to the national camp by competing in the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad earlier this month. However, they missed the recent World Cup in Astana. The 20-member squad was finalised after the boxers went through a week-long assessment at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala. The tournament, to be held from September 4 to 14, will be the first World Championships held under the aegis of the new governing body of the sport, World Boxing. The SAI NCOE combined team earned seven medals, including two gold, while the TOPS Core & Development squad clinched three gold, completing the podium. Railways' gold medallists included Babirojsana Chanu (57kg), who achieved a dominant 5:0 victory over Kamaljeet Kaur of All India Police, Prachi (60kg), and Jyoti (51kg), who was awarded the win after Telangana's Nikhat Zareen withdrew due to injury. 'Winning gold at the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament is the perfect start to my preparations before I head overseas to begin the next phase of my training for the Women's World Boxing Championships in September. The competition here was intense and facing such high-caliber opponents has only strengthened my resolve," said Lovlina. The remaining gold medals were distributed among SAI NCOE, TOPS, and state units. Former Youth world champion Ankushita Boro (65kg) also secured a top-podium finish with a hard-fought 3:2 win over Railways' Shashi. Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 29 (ANI): Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 medalist Lovlina Borgohain eased past Punjab's Krisha Verma in the 75 kg weight category with a unanimous victory, setting up a clash against Uttar Pradesh boxer Sneha in the penultimate round of the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Telangana on Sunday. Former youth world champion Ankushita Boro showcased her class on Day 2 of the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament, advancing to the semifinals in the 65kg category with a clinical 5:0 win over Rajasthan pugilist Parthvi on Sunday. In the 51kg division, home favourite and two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen delighted the Hyderabad crowd with a dominant 5:0 victory over Kalpana. Organised by the Telangana Boxing Federation under the aegis of the Boxing Federation of India and the Sports Authority of Telangana, the tournament brings together top-tier names and emerging prospects from across the country. With 15 participating units--including 12 from the recent Elite Nationals, host Telangana, the SAI NCOE Combined team, and the TOPS Talent & Development squad--the competition is part of BFI's ongoing initiative to refine the national pool and scout future stars, as per a BFI press release.
