Applications Open for Second Meat Minds Programme

The Meat Minds programme is now open for applications from people working in Wales' red meat supply chain. Launched last year, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) said it had received an extremely positive response to the initiative and is on the look-out for its second group of recruits. Successful applicants will be given exclusive access to the latest industry insight and professional expertise during themed sessions and from a personal mentor. They will enjoy opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the supply chain, from farm to fork, and forge new connections. HCC's Producer and Processor Senior Officer Lowri Thomas said: 'We are pleased to offer this unique opportunity again this year to young and enthusiastic individuals. Members could be farmers, processors, butchers, retailers, chefs – or anyone involved in the red meat supply chain between the age of 21-35. They must be passionate about red meat production and promotion, interested in research and development and keen to see developments within the industry.' Participants will need to commit to a total of six days – five themed days and one other spent with an assigned mentor in the workplace. They will benefit from numerous networking opportunities and industry know-how from guest speakers. As a group, they will be expected to work collectively on an industry focused project of their choice to produce results that will benefit the industry. Lowri added: 'We have very much enjoyed working with a great group of people this year and look forward to providing the next group with a whole host of worthwhile experiences.' 2024-2025 group member Dafydd Walters said: 'We've had opportunities to meet people from within the sector and make valuable connections. We've heard from a dietician, we've touched on marketing, on nutrition, animal health and the environment, we've gained a real perspective of the red meat supply chain. The programme has been unique and a fantastic experience.' Daniel Owen is also a member of the first group. He said: 'We have met with several retail representatives as well as scientists and organisations that have taught us everything from farm to fork. The programme provides you with invaluable experience in the fact that you meet leaders within the industry and get to create connections with like-minded individuals your age.' The deadline to apply for the second round of Meat Minds is 5pm on Wednesday 2 July. The application form can be downloaded from the HCC website.

More Than 100 Apprentices Attend Training Company's Graduation Ceremony

Milestones in the learning journeys of more than 100 Welsh apprentices were celebrated at an apprenticeship graduation ceremony in Mid Wales. Apprentices travelled from across Wales to attend the bi-annual graduation ceremony organised by Cambrian Training Company and its sub-contractors at the Royal Welsh Showground, Llanelwedd. Cambrian Training Company's managing director, Faith O'Brien, congratulated the graduates, but said: 'Remember this day as a milestone, not the destination. The skills you've gained through your apprenticeship are the tools – how you utilise them, shape them and innovate with them is up to you. 'As you move forward, keep the spirit of learning alive, embrace challenges and remember that every experience, good or bad, is a step closer to the professional you aspire to be. 'Apprenticeships open doors for everyone, allowing individuals to enter their desired careers. They also help businesses to build the skilled workforce they need, proving that learning isn't just confined to classrooms – it's about gaining real-world experience. 'Every single apprentice has proved that, with dedication, resilience and the right guidance, anyone can create their own path to success. We want to shout your achievements from the rooftops.' Cambrian Training Company is one of Wales' leading work-based learning providers, delivering apprenticeships for the Welsh Government. Sectors covered by the company and its partners include hospitality, food and drink manufacturing, leadership and management, sustainable resource management, health and social care and hairdressing. Faith revealed that more than 480 of the company's learners had successfully completed their frameworks over the past six months. She thanked trainers and mentors who had contributed to the success of the graduating apprentices and the company's partners, stakeholders and employers for their 'unwavering' support. 'Your support and expertise have been the cornerstone of these apprentices' success,' she said. 'You've not only shared your knowledge but also instilled confidence and belief in each apprentice. 'Our collaboration ensures that the skills our apprentices gain are not just relevant but are exactly what our evolving industries need.' One of this year's graduates was Lowri Milson, 23, from Penclawdd. Working with Cambrian Training Company and Elite, she was one of their first learners to complete a Foundation Apprenticeship in Hospitality Services on the Supported Shared Apprenticeship programme, designed for apprentices with learning needs. Lowri, who volunteers at cafes in Penllegaer and Dunvant, is keen to secure a job working in a bar. She was supported to achieve her apprenticeship by Cambrian Training Company's hospitality training officer Andrew Addis-Fuller who said he was proud of her achievement. 'Lowri is a remarkable individual who was very shy when I first met her,' he said. 'She developed her confidence so quickly that she was soon able to work on her own during busy shifts. I am so proud of her.' Lowri said: 'Today's graduation means that I have accomplished something special in my life and I want to continue learning. I want to return to bar work in the future because I enjoy meeting new people and interacting with customers.'

Conwy couple one step away from winning 'dream' farm

Viewers will see Ryan and Lowri, from Conwy, go head-to-head against remaining hopefuls Sara and Ioan, from Ceredigion and Gwynedd, in a sheep dog trial in the last episode on Saturday, May 3. The couples will also present their business plans to Trystan Edwards, Eryri General Manager, and Giles Hunt, Land and Estates Director for all of the National Trust, in a bid to be crowned the new tenants of a 600-acre dream farm in Eryri (Snowdonia). Over the last few weeks, seven applicants have battled it out to become the new tenants of unique hill farm Llyndy Isaf, Nant Gwynant, by completing real-life farming tasks. Applicants have now been whittled down to just two. Ryan and Lowri live just 20 miles away from the farm. The husband and wife duo, who have two young children, hope the tenancy will be a chance to combine Ryan's passion for hill farming and Lowri's desire to welcome tourists to the farm. Ryan is a first generation farmer but has built up his livestock throughout his career and hopes to bring them to the farm. Lowri said: "We've benefited a lot from this experience." Ryan said: "We came as a married couple but we are leaving here as business partners." Ryan admitted to Matt that without Lowri, he couldn't do "any of my things". Lowri said to Ryan: "I'm just proud to see you in your element and seeing you grow in the past eight years." The couple said they "don't give up easily". They said the tenancy will allow them to grow as a family and individually and give them a chance to "make their mark". Llyndy Isaf has been in the care of National Trust Cymru since the charity bought the farm in 2012 after a successful public appeal. READ MORE Throughout the series, applicants have been monitored by Trystan and Giles. Trystan Edwards, general manager for Eryri, National Trust Cymru, said: 'It's a privilege to have a farm in Wales selected for this programme. Llyndy is an incredible landscape, from the shores of Llyn Dinas to the heather clad ridge of Mynydd Llyndy, it holds a special place for nature, people and history." The winners, who will be offered a life changing 15-year tenancy of the farm, will be revealed in the episode on May 3. National Trust: Our Dream Farm with Matt Baker is on Channel 4 on Saturday at 7pm. Readers can catch up on 4oD.
