'Harry Potter' Actor, 62, Makes Rare Comment About Daniel Radcliffe

'Harry Potter' Actor, 62, Makes Rare Comment About Daniel Radcliffe originally appeared on Parade. Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs is opening up about his former castmate, Daniel Radcliffe, who famously played the titular character in the film franchise. During the June 9 episode of Modern Family star, Jesse Tyler Ferguson's podcast,Dinner's On Me, Isaacs, who played the nefarious Lucius Malfoy, complimented Radcliffe for his intelligence and his humbleness. "I always knew he was smart. I thought he would, and I still think he'll end up being a director as well as an actor. But I loved what [is that] he was so grounded and so mature, always and humble. And he's continued to be ambitious. Really ambitious. And take risks as well. He's like, 'I've been famous. I'm rich. I've done those things. So now I do interesting, independent films,'" said Isaacs during the podcast interview. The White Lotus actor also shared he and Radcliffe improvised a moment together toward the end of the 2002 film, Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. "My very first day I was improvising lines and my very first shot was walking out of Dumbledore's office from the end of Chamber of Secrets and where he just dismissed me," said Isaacs while recording the podcast episode. "And I leave and I went, 'I don't know if this, would this guy leave without saying something. Harry Potter's there. He's a very proud, arrogant man. Surely he'd say something, try get status back in.' We'll try something. And I made up a line. And Danny made up a line back and I thought, we're allowed to make s--t up in Harry Potter. Wow." Isaacs reacted to the recent news that actor and musician Johnny Flynn has been chosen to play Lucius for the upcoming HBO Harry Potter television series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 62-year-old shared he was pleased that Flynn was going to play Lucius on his X account. 'A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too. Couldn't have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don't make him sing…' wrote Isaacs in the June 9 X post. Jason Isaacs Has Some Thoughts About The New Harry Potter Actor Playing Lucius Malfoy

The upcoming Harry Potter TV show is taking shape and, as part of that, the cast is being assembled. Over the past few weeks, Warner Bros. Discovery has been announcing the cast members, with the new Harry, Ron and Hermione stars even having been revealed. Earlier today, another round of supporting actors were revealed, including the actor who's set to play Lucius Malfoy. With that, Jason Isaacs – the actor who originated the role in the Potter films – took to social media to share his own take on the casting decision. It's been confirmed that British actor and musician Johnny Flynn is set to take on the role of Lucius on the highly anticipated fantasy series. Social media has apparently been set ablaze regarding the choice, with fans sharing their share of thoughts. Amid the chatter, Jason Isaacs took to X, where he retweeted a post about Flynn's casting. He also shared a sweet message of support for his predecessor as well as a humorous request: A fantastic actor, a lovely man and, irritatingly, a rather brilliant musician too. Couldn't have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don't make him sing… Leave it to the always-witty Jason Isaacs to come to the party with a bit of humor. Nevertheless, he seems to be all in on Johnny Flynn taking over his famous role, and that probably shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Isaacs actually had the opportunity to view Flynn's talents up close, as they starred alongside each other in the 2021 war film Operation Mincemeat. So I wouldn't take that last comment as an insult of any kind, given it's likely more of a playful jab. More on the Harry Potter show The Incredible Way The New Harry Potter Series Is Already Coming Together (And Yes, A Real School Is Involved) This is indeed a solid acquisition for the Potter show, as Flynn is indeed a true talent. He's shown off his acting prowess in films like Emma and Stardust, with the latter featuring him in the role of late musician David Bowie. As for his TV credits, the multihyphenate has appeared on Lovesick, Genius and The Lovers among other titles. He's also the frontman and lead songwriter of the band Johnny Flynn & the Sussex Wit. So, needless to say, Flynn is a man of many talents. Jason Issacs' positive feelings about the casting definitely track, given what he's been saying as of late. In April, Isaacs joked about his version of Lucius eventually being forgotten, due to someone else playing him on the eventual TV show. Despite that, Isaacs truly seemed to be at peace with the notion of his interpretation being pushed aside. On top of that, before he made those statements, he even pitched Meryl Streep to play Lucius. (And that's honestly a fun thought.) As mentioned a host of other Harry Potter characters were cast today, joining the previously announced cast. Check out the latest batch of stars to be confirmed for the show: Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge I'm confident that Johnny Flynn will bring something unique to the role of Lucius Malfoy. Sure, it'll be different from Jason Isaacs' take on the character but, of course, Flynn's goal shouldn't be to repeat what's come before. Whatever happens though, I agree with Isaacs in that Flynn's stellar musical talents should be left at the door once he takes on this iconic role. The Harry Potter show is set to premiere sometime in 2026 and will be available for HBO Max subscription holders. In the meantime, why not take a look at the titles that lie within the 2025 TV schedule.

Jason Isaacs reveals ‘professional catastrophe' after blockbuster movie flopped

Actor Jason Isaacs has revealed his career was plagued by 'catastrophe' after one of his blockbuster movies flopped spectacularly at the box office. The English actor, 62, spoke to Vulture following his recent starring in season three of HBO's smash hit The White Lotus, when conversation turned to his role in 2003's infamous bomb Peter Pan. Isaacs, who is perhaps best known for playing Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, portrayed Captain Hook in the much-hyped live-action fantasy film remake, which was shot on the Gold Coast in Australia. Despite receiving positive reviews after its release, the Universal Pictures film lost money, pulling in a worldwide total of just $US122 million against a $US130 million budget. Peter Pan 's failure to perform ultimately came down to heavy competition at the box office, with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Cheaper by the Dozen both in cinemas at the time. Remembering the setback, Isaacs said he was the 'lowest' he'd 'ever been' after its release. 'It was a big expensive production with multiple studios. We filmed for 14 months. The film tanked,' Isaacs told the outlet. 'I think it's a masterpiece, but people looked at the poster and went, 'Oh, f**k it. I've seen Hook with Robin Williams, and I've seen the cartoon. Why do I need to see another one?' 'It was a catastrophe professionally for me, a huge fall from grace. I couldn't get a walk-on role,' he continued. 'And I changed my agent and I almost changed my job, frankly, because I didn't think I'd work again. The lowest I've ever been was after Peter Pan. 'I was really in despair but not as bad as I would have been had I believed any of the bulls**t that had been whispered in my ear. 'I didn't over-invest in the results of it, which is something I tried to counsel the young actors on The White Lotus not to do.' On The White Lotus, Isaacs also confirmed widespread reports that all actors in the ensemble series were paid the equal sum of $US40,000 per episode, bringing their total pay for the series to $US320,000 each. It meant up-and-coming stars, including Sarah Catherine Hook and Sam Nivola, were paid the same as industry veterans including Isaac, Parker Posey and Leslie Bibb. 'I didn't know that was public knowledge. That's absolutely true,' Isaacs said of their salaries. 'Generally actors don't talk about pay in public because it's ridiculously disproportionate to what we do — putting on makeup and funny voices — and just upsets the public. But compared to what people normally get paid for big television shows, that's a very low price. 'But the fact is, we would have paid to be in it. We probably would have given a body part.'

But there's also a new Draco in town, as newcomer Lox Pratt will play the 'Harry Potter' character in HBO's television series. Jason Isaacs Supports Johnny Flynn Cast as Lucius Malfoy in HBO's ‘Harry Potter' Series

Jason Isaacs is passing the torch to the new Lucius Malfoy. On Monday, HBO announced nine more castmembers in the upcoming series, including who will play the Malfoy father and son Slytherins. Ripley actor and musician Johnny Flynn was cast as Lucius Malfoy and newcomer Lox Pratt will play Draco Malfoy. Couldn't have handed the snake-topped baton on to anyone better. Just please don't make him sing…' Last week, Harry Potter fans also got more exciting news when it was announced on Thursday that Tom Felton, who played Draco in the films, would play Draco again — but in the Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which begins on Nov. 11 and is a 19-week engagement through March 22, 2026. Felton attended the Tony Awards on Sunday and was a presenter, to which Isaacs took to X to confirm that he will go see his movie son on Broadway. 'Saw you presenting on the Tonys tonight son — you looked good, sounded good and did great. Tickets booked for November x,' Isaacs wrote. Prior to the award show airing, Felton spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about how it's the 'perfect' time to step back into the role of Draco, because in the play, Draco is now a Dad and the same age that Felton is in real life. 'Now, it's very much reprising the role, but also creating a new one because he's a father now. He doesn't want to make the same mistakes that Lucius made with Draco,' Felton said. 'So, it's familiar, but it's brand, brand new, so I'm really excited for that.'
