Angels activate Yoán Moncada after five-week absence

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels expected a boost with the return of third baseman Yoán Moncada, who was activated for Tuesday night's game against the Texas Rangers after missing five weeks because of right knee inflammation. The switch-hitting Moncada, 30, was batting .237 with an .841 OPS, six homers, six doubles and 19 RBIs in 30 games when he went on the injured list on June 2. Moncada is also one of the team's more disciplined hitters, with 32 strikeouts and 13 walks in 113 plate appearances. Advertisement 'We've all seen it — we know how valuable he is to us,' Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery said. 'He just anchors everything. He brings peace and calm to third base and the lineup. I'm glad he's here.' Moncada, who batted sixth and played third base Tuesday night, had four hits in nine at-bats during a brief rehabilitation stint with the club's rookie league affiliate in Arizona, playing one game at third base. 'I'm not 100%,' Moncada, speaking through an interpreter, said when asked if his knee is still bothering him a bit, 'but the knee is … I don't feel as bad.' Luis Rengifo, who is batting .230 with a .584 OPS, four homers and 20 RBIs in 83 games, and Kevin Newman, who is batting .211 with a .486 OPS in 43 games, were the team's primary third basemen in Moncada's absence, but neither is as productive as Moncada. Advertisement Rengifo will move to second base to replace the injured Christian Moore, but he is still expected to make some starts at third as Moncada is eased back into a full-time role. 'I think there's sort of an air of caution in general,' Montgomery said, when asked if Moncada will need more days off. 'We have a four-day break coming up in a week. He's missed some time. He played three games. He came out of them clean. We want to keep that momentum, and if we can, we will.' ___ AP MLB:

Hot Angels plate 4 runs in 8th, shut out Braves

July 2 - The visiting Los Angeles Angels broke up a scoreless game with four runs in the eighth inning and beat the Atlanta Braves 4-0 on Tuesday in the opener of their three-game series. The Angels have won five of their last seven and pulled back to the .500 mark. The Braves have lost five of their last six and dropped to eight games below .500. With one out in the eighth, Mike Trout delivered a hustle double and Taylor Ward walked. Jo Adell then lined a changeup from reliever Dylan Lee (1-3) down the left-field line for a double to drive in the first run. Former Brave Jorge Soler greeted new pitcher Enyel De Los Santos with a double to drive in a pair, and pinch-runner Gustavo Campero scored on an RBI single by Luis Rengifo. A trio of Los Angeles relievers -- Jose Fermin (1-0), Reid Detmers and Kenley Jansen -- covered the final three innings to complete the team's fifth shutout. It was the seventh time Atlanta has been blanked this season. The starting pitchers both worked six scoreless innings. Atlanta's Grant Holmes allowed three hits, three walks and struck out 10 -- his second game with double-digit strikeouts -- and departed after throwing 106 pitches. LA's Tyler Anderson gave up four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts. Both teams wasted scoring opportunities. The Angels left the bases loaded in the fourth and stranded runners on the corners in the fifth. Atlanta got a leadoff triple from Michael Harris II in the fifth inning -- his first extra-base hit since June 20 -- but were unable to drive him home. Atlanta's Matt Olson had a hit and walk and extended his career-best on-base streak to 31 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors. The last Atlanta player to surpass 30 games was Freddie Freeman, who reach base in 33 straight in 2020. Atlanta's Ronald Acuna Jr. struck out four times for the second time in his career; the other occasion was Sept. 13, 2020, against the Nationals. --Field Level Media
