Carlos Mendoza on David Wright ceremony, slumping Francisco Lindor, Luis Torrens' crucial error

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said he had tears in his eyes watching the David Wright ceremony prior to the game. His Mets team of 2025 however appears to be out of sync. Francisco Lindor's swing appears to be "getting long" according to Mendoza and the main reason he's mired in a slump. He was not happy with Luis Torrens' throwing error on a pick-off play, observing that it was not the "right situation" for that play.

Juan Soto's mad dash home in the 8th helps Mets avoid sweep by Reds

Juan Soto dashed home with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, beating a throw to the plate on Luis Torrens' sharp grounder to second base, and the New York Mets avoided a three-game sweep Sunday with a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Soto led off the inning by drawing a walk from Brent Suter (1-1) and went to third on Jeff McNeil's one-out double. With the infield playing in, Tony Santillan got Torrens to hit a hard grounder to second baseman Matt McLain, but Soto got an excellent jump and scored with a headfirst slide as the one-hop throw arrived. Ryne Stanek earned his second save with a scoreless ninth. Edwin Díaz (5-0) blew a save opportunity for the second time this season when he plunked Spencer Steer with a pitch to force home the tying run in the eighth. Díaz then struck out Tyler Stephenson to leave the bases loaded. Brandon Nimmo had an RBI single in the third and No. 9 hitter Luisangel Acuña gave the Mets a 2-1 lead with a run-scoring double in the fifth. Elly De La Cruz hit an RBI single in the first for the Reds. Mets left-hander David Peterson allowed an unearned run in six innings. Fellow All-Star Andrew Abbott gave up two runs in six innings for Cincinnati. It was Torrens' first RBI in a Mets victory since he had two in an 8-1 win over Colorado on June 7. The bottom four Mets batters went 4 for 13 with two RBIs. ... Reds center fielder TJ Friedl was plunked four times in the series and has been hit by a pitch six times in his last five games. He was hit by a pitch just five times in his first 91 games. The Mets continue a six-game homestand Monday night, when RHP Kodai Senga (7-3, 1.39 ERA) starts against Los Angeles Angels LHP Tyler Anderson (2-6, 4.34). The Reds head to Washington, where RHP Brady Singer (7-7, 4.32 ERA) opposes Nationals RHP Jake Irvin (7-5, 4.58).

MLB experimenting with new challenge system at All-Star Game

A national audience is about to learn all about the automatic balls and strikes (ABS) challenge system. MLB will employ the ABS system in next week's All-Star Game on July 15 while there are growing calls to move toward using the operation in the future, according to ESPN. While MLB employed the ABS system during spring training and in the minors, there will be more eyeballs watching the Midsummer Classic than your random Grapefruit League game. The hitter reportedly has to hit his helmet or hat to indicate he would like to challenge the call, and then an animated replay will be shown on the scoreboard for the umpire to review for a ruling. The need for a better-defined strike zone has been increasing in recent years fans as players, managers, executives and fans alike have grown tired of bad calls affecting games. 3 The ball missing the zone in the ABS system. Advertisement MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said last month he plans to submit a proposal to the 11-person competition committee this summer to decide on whether to implement ABS for the 2026 system. 'I think that teams are really positive about ABS,' Manfred said, per The Athletic. 'You know, I do have that unscientific system that I use — my email traffic — and my distinct impression is that using ABS in spring training has made people more prone to complain about balls and strike calls via email, to me, referencing the need for ABS. That is undoubtedly true, undoubtedly true.' Players reportedly prefer a challenge system compared to a fully automated strike zone, while fans overwhelmingly approve of the ABS system. Advertisement MLB officials relayed to ESPN that 72 percent of fans said ABS had a 'positive' effect on their experience and 69 percent would like it to be implemented going forward. 3 The ABS system would, in theory, help lessen managers flipping out on umpires. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Only 10 percent had negatives view of the system. This year's All-Star Game will be played at Truist Park in Atlanta.
