'Will AI replace lawyers? Law intern asks to use ChatGPT for witness analysis, gets hard copies instead
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to make inroads across industries, the legal profession is grappling with its place in traditional workflows. A recent viral post by senior advocate Sidharth Luthra on Twitter has sparked a fresh wave of debate.(AP) A recent viral post by senior advocate Sidharth Luthra on X has sparked a fresh wave of debate, after a law intern revealed he was prevented from using ChatGPT to analyse witness statements during an appeal case. The intern, who was assisting with legal work, had proposed using the AI tool to help process and interpret complex witness testimonies. However, his mentor reportedly dismissed the idea and instead handed him a stack of hard copies, telling him to rely on 'natural intelligence' over artificial intelligence. (Also Read: IT firm employee claims no salary hike for 3 years, wants to buy autorickshaw: 'Drive it before, after working hours') 'A law intern wanted to use Chat GPT to analyse witness statements for an appeal in my office. His mentor gave him hard copies to use natural Intelligence instead of artificial Intelligence [AI]!!!!,' Luthra wrote on X. The post caught fire on social media, with many users, including legal professionals, weighing in on what it says about the current attitude toward technology in law. How did X users react? 'AI can very well read and analyse hard copies as well. At times better than humans,' one user commented. 'Law practitioners must embrace AI, not oppose it.' Another responder shared a startling anecdote from the field, 'In some prominent police stations in Telugu states, officers are reportedly using ChatGPT to prepare remand copies. Statements were being recorded and processed by AI, all without the accused knowing. It was saving typing time and the sections were also accurate, they said.' Some took a more balanced view, noting the potential of AI when combined with human judgment. 'Natural intelligence combined with artificial intelligence is the way forward.' 'AI won't replace lawyers, but lawyers who use AI will replace those who don't, the next 5-7 years will prove this.' The exchange has since opened a wider conversation about how, and when, AI should be integrated into legal processes. While some see it as a threat to tradition, ethics, or even job security, others argue that AI tools like ChatGPT can streamline research, improve drafting accuracy, and eliminate repetitive tasks. Delhi Confidential: Heavy hitters
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal is learnt to be leading the battery of lawyers appearing for Justice Yashwant Varma in the challenge against in-house inquiry mechanism that indicted him. Sibal will be joined by former Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, and Senior Advocates Sidharth Luthra and Siddharth Agarwal. Both Sibal and Luthra have handled impeachment proceedings in the past. While Sibal appeared for Justice V Ramaswami in 1993 and spearheaded the motion against former CJI Dipak Misra, Luthra appeared for Justice S K Gangele. Soft Diplomacy Many delegates, who were part of the post-Operation Sindoor global outreach, had called for more soft diplomacy and exchange programmes. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seems to have taken this up. During a meeting Friday with a South Korean delegation led by former prime minister Kim Boo Kyum, Birla proposed the idea of parliamentary friendship groups from the Indian side. Such groups from both sides are expected to have interactions in future. Quick Exit Many officials and politicians tend to overstay in their official bungalows long after demitting office. Former IAS officer Amitabh Kant, however, vacated his official bungalow at 6, New Moti Bagh within a month of resigning as India's G20 Sherpa on June 15.

HC junks plea challenging ex-CM Channi's election
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed an election petition challenging the victory of former Punjab CM and Congress member of Parliament Charanjit Singh Channi from the Jalandhar (SC) Lok Sabha seat. The petition, filed by Jalandhar-based social activist Gaurav Luthra, had accused Channi of indulging in corrupt practices, underreporting election expenses, and concealing material information in his affidavit submitted to the Election Commission. However, Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma on Thursday dismissed the case after Luthra's counsel repeatedly failed to appear in court. Channi, who won the Jalandhar seat in the June 4 results, was represented in court by advocate Nikhil Ghai. In his plea, Luthra alleged that Channi concealed key details in his Form 26 affidavit, including actual election expenditure. He claimed that a lavish round-the-clock langar at a local guest house, multiple roadshows, the hiring of singers, and a large number of public meetings were not properly accounted for in the expense register. The petitioner also alleged that local media, including news portals and TV channels, gave disproportionate coverage to Channi, amounting to paid news that was not reflected in his poll spending. Luthra had sought that Channi's election be declared void under Section 100 of the Representation of People Act, 1951.

Supreme Court grants Tamil Nadu MLA Jagan Moorthy anticipatory bail in abduction case
The Supreme Court Monday granted anticipatory bail to Tamil Nadu MLA M Jagan Moorthy in the case of the alleged abduction of a teenager in the state's Thiruvallur district, and said 'the matter requires consideration.' Issuing notice to the Tamil Nadu Police, the bench of Justices Manoj Mishra and N Kotiswar Singh directed, 'In the meantime, if the petitioner is arrested in connection with FIR No.101/2025 registered at PS – Thiruvalangadu (renumbered as C.R. No.1/2025), he shall be released on personal bond of Rs.25,000/-, subject to the undertaking that he shall cooperate in the investigation and will not threaten the witnesses or tamper the evidence.' Moorthy, the Kilvaithinankuppam AIADMK MLA, approached the top court after the Madras High Court dismissed his plea on June 27. Appearing for him, Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra submitted, 'There is no dispute that the abductee was recovered and not from the possession or control of the applicant.' Luthra contended the legislator 'has been implicated for malafide reasons by alleging that he had a hand in the abduction' and that 'even assuming that the applicant interacted with one of the parties to the dispute, that may be considered for the purposes of settling the issue.' Luthra added, 'In any event, no custodial interrogation is required.' The Madras High Court also ordered the arrest of H M Jayaram, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Tamil Nadu, in the matter, but it was set aside by the Supreme Court. Moorthy and Jayaram were 'implicated' in the May 10 abduction of an 18-year-old boy in Thiruvallur. The boy was reportedly abducted by a group seeking information about his elder brother, who had married a young woman from Theni district against her family's wishes.

Informing accused grounds of arrest: SC agrees to hear Karnataka's plea against HC order
New Delhi, The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a plea of Karnataka Police against an order which rejected an accused's custody remand in a murder case saying he was not informed about the grounds of arrest. Informing accused grounds of arrest: SC agrees to hear Karnataka's plea against HC order A bench of Justices K V Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh said the matter required consideration. "The matter requires consideration. Issue notice on the special leave petition and on the application for stay," the bench said. In its April 17 order, the high court set aside the trial court's remand order passed on February 17, 2023 and directed the man's release from custody subject to certain conditions. The apex court issued notice to the man, arrested on February 17, 2023 in a murder case in Hassan district, for his response on the plea. Senior advocate Sidharth Luthra appeared for the police. The bench noted that in a separate plea over the issue of grounds of arrest, the apex court reserved its verdict on April 22. "The outcome of this judgement will have a bearing on finally deciding this matter. Place this matter for further consideration on July 18," the bench said. Luthra said a large number of cases were pending before the high court, where it was likely that the order under challenge before the apex court in the present case would be cited as a precedent. "You show this order to the high court. We are waiting for this, they should also wait," the bench told Luthra. The high court order noted the petitioner was not informed any "worthwhile particulars, as soon as may be, upon his arrest", let alone the satisfaction of the requirement of communication in writing the grounds as postulated in subsequent judgments pronounced since the arrest. The top court would consider in the separate plea, in which verdict was reserved on April 22, whether in each and every case, even arising out of an offence under the erstwhile IPC, would it be necessary to furnish grounds of arrest to an accused either before arrest or forthwith after arrest. It would also consider whether, even in exceptional cases, where on account of certain exigencies it will not be possible to furnish the grounds of arrest either before arrest or immediately after arrest, the arrest would be vitiated on the ground of non-compliance with the provisions of section 50 of the erstwhile CrPC. Section 50 of the CrPC deals with person arrested to be informed of grounds of arrest and of right to bail. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
