India's Luxmi Group takes majority stake in Brew Tea Co.

Indian tea group Luxmi Group has acquired a majority stake in the UK's Brew Tea Co. for an undisclosed sum. Following the transaction, which took place in June, co-founders Phil and Aideen Kirby now have a 20% stake in Brew Tea Co., according to a joint statement with Luxmi Group. Everyday operations at Brew Tea Co. are to remain unchanged following the deal, co-founders Phil and Aideen Kirby told Just Drinks, with all executive management and businesses retaining their roles. They added they "look forward to see exciting new products and new markets evolve in the near future". Set up in Manchester in 2012, Brew Tea Co. sells a range of loose-leaf tea and tea bags, which includes English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Assam varieties as well as herbal infusions like lemon and ginger or apple and blackberry. "This partnership allows us to strengthen those relationships at the source. What matters most to us is the experience in people's kitchens every single day,' co-founder Phil Kirby said in the statement. 'We're proud of how close we are to our customers - their loyalty has built Brew Tea Co. We're excited that with Luxmi, we can now take that same customer promise even further, with even better access to exceptional teas." As well as selling to large UK retailers like Waitrose, Sainbury's and Ocado, Brew Tea Co. also runs a subscriptions-based service, and currently has roughly 10,000 subscribers throughout the country. The group also ships globally according to its website. Commenting on the deal, Luxmi Group managing director Rudra Chatterjee said: 'As India celebrates its bicentennial of tea grown first in Assam, we are honoured to help bring the traditional craft that made Indian tea world-famous back into global focus." Founded in 1912, family-owned Luxmi produces a range of teas from 20 tea estates in West Bengal, Assam and Tripura, selling worldwide. It also manages four estates in Rwanda in Africa. Like Brew Tea Co., the company also runs a subscription service. Both groups said they would stay focused "on whole-leaf excellence, using only rolled leaves", as well as "on ethical sourcing". "By combining digital convenience with craft authenticity, they also aim to innovate the subscription experience", the statement added. "India's Luxmi Group takes majority stake in Brew Tea Co." was originally created and published by Just Drinks, a GlobalData owned brand. Makaibari owner buys 80% in UK's Brew Tea Co

Kolkata: Luxmi Group, owner of the iconic Makaibari Tea Estate, has acquired a majority stake in UK-based Brew Tea Co. Brew Tea deals exclusively with orthodox tea and has both an online and offline presence in the UK. Luxmi Group acquired an 80% stake in the company, while the remaining 20% remains with the existing promoters. After Tetley and Typhoo, this acquisition marks another British tea company being acquired by an Indian corporate, though it may not be of the same magnitude. Brew Tea Co was founded in Manchester by Phil and Aideen Kirby and has grown into a specialty tea brand, having a revenue between 5 million-10 million pounds (around Rs 100 crore). According to Brew Tea, its subscription service, delivering 500g of loose leaf or proper tea bags on a regular basis, now reaches nearly 10,000 homes across the UK - "brewed in over 40,000 kitchens". For most of its history, India produced orthodox whole-leaf teas. Since the 1950s, CTC (crush-tear-curl) processing revolutionised tea by enabling mass production, faster brewing and lower costs. Today, over 80% of India's tea production is CTC. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . AI Masterclass for Students. Kolkata's Luxmi Group acquires majority stake in UK's Brew Tea Co

Kolkata-based Luxmi Group, which owns the iconic Makaibari estate in Darjeeling, has acquired a majority stake in UK-based Brew Tea Co., a specialty tea company focused on whole-leaf teas. Founded in Manchester by Phil and Aideen Kirby, the Brew Tea Co.'s subscription service now reaches nearly 10,000 homes across the UK. Co-founders – Phil and Aideen Kirby – will retain a 20 per cent stake and continue to lead Brew Tea Co. as part of the partnership, a statement said. The partnership with Luxmi Group, which produces about 30 million kg tea across 25 estates in Assam, Darjeeling and Rwanda, will strengthen sourcing for Brew Tea Co. 'We've always believed that if you start with great leaves and the right partners, you don't need to interfere too much,' Aideen said in a statement. 'Sourcing directly from estates that share our values — with care for people, land, and craftsmanship — is what makes our tea taste as good as it does. This partnership allows us to strengthen those relationships at the source. What matters most to us is the experience in people's kitchens every single day,' added Phil. By joining forces, Luxmi and Brew Tea Co. aim to create a complete farm-to-cup model — offering full traceability, exceptional freshness, and a direct connection between garden and consumer. 'As India celebrates its bicentennial of tea grown first in Assam, we are honoured to help bring the traditional craft that made Indian tea world-famous back into global focus,' Rudra Chatterjee, managing director, Luxmi Group. Over 80 per cent of India's tea production is CTC (Crush-Tear-Curl) – which caters to the global demand for bagged, commoditised tea. But orthodox whole-leaf tea — hand-picked and carefully rolled, is the choice of tea connoisseurs across the world. For Brew Tea Co., the focus on whole-leaf excellence using rolled leaves with 'no dust or shortcuts' will continue to be the focus.
