Lokeshwar stars in LKK's first win of the season

Opener Lokeshwar's best score in TNPL (90 n.o, 57b, 5x4, 5x6) and leg-spinner R. Divakar's three for 16 helped Lyca Kovai Kings (LKK) beat Nellai Royal Kings (NRK) by 67 runs in a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match at the Chennai Super Kings ground here on Saturday. Chasing 166, NRK folded for 98 to hand LKK its first win of the season. Earlier, LKK posted 165 for six, having been put in to bat. The new-ball swing and the wind blowing across the ground throughout the innings made run-scoring difficult. Left-hander B. Sachin (10) slog-swept left-arm spinner Sachin Rathi against the wind for S.R. Athish to pouch it at deep midwicket. Andre Siddarth (duck) hit against the wind off Rathi too, skipping down the pitch to the second ball he faced to hole out to Muhammed Adnan Khan, who ran in from long off. Only skipper Shahrukh Khan (30, 25b, 2x4, 2x6) defied the wind. He pulled off-spinner B. Rocky for a six to deep square leg and hit a six off left-arm spinner N.S. Harish over a leaping long-off fielder, both against the wind. He engaged in a 75-run fourth-wicket stand (off 46 balls) with Lokeshwar. Lokeshwar ramped Yudheeswaran for a six to fine leg in the sixth over and slog-swept a slot ball for a six to deep midwicket off the same bowler in the 20th over. He also ramped Cherian for a six to fine leg and slog-swept Rathi with the wind for a six to deep midwicket. On reaching his fifty off 39 balls, he danced down the track and hoisted Rathi for a straight six. The scores: Lyca Kovai Kings 165/6 in 20 overs (S. Lokeshwar 90 n.o, Shahrukh Khan 30, Sonu Yadav 2/16, Sachin Rathi 2/25) bt Nellai Royal Kings 98 in 17.5 overs (P. Bhuvaneswaran 2/9, M. Siddharth 2/16, R. Divakar 3/16, N. Kabilan 2/26). Toss: Royal Kings. Sunday's matches: SKM Salem Spartans vs Dindigul Dragons (3.15 p.m.); Siechem Madurai Panthers vs Idream Tiruppur Tamizhans (7.15 p.m.).

Ram Arvindh and Chaturved sizzle as Panthers take down Kovai Kings

R. Ram Arvindh's well-crafted 64 (48b, 4x4, 3x6) and a quickfire cameo from skipper N. S. Chaturved (46 n.o., 23b, 4x4, 3x6) helped Siechem Madurai Panthers beat Lyca Kovai Kings by seven wickets in the final league game of the Coimbatore leg of the TNPL-9 at the Sri Ramakrishna College here on Wednesday. Pursuing 170, openers Ram and B. Anirudh Sita Ram (37) showed that batters could score at a brisk pace while playing conventional shots and gave their side a solid start. The duo displayed positive intent while minimising risk during their 88-run alliance. Ram showed great range, sweeping and late-cutting M. Shahrukh Khan for a six and four. He then lofted N. Kabilan and walked down to flick the pacer through the leg-side majestically. Later, skipper Chaturved came out guns blazing, smashing Jhatavedh Subramanyan for two sixes and a four in the 13th over and got the job done. Earlier, for the second match in succession, the Kovai Kings' batters failed, and it was left to skipper Shahrukh to save his outfit from the blemish with an entertaining unbeaten 77 (44b, 8x4, 4x6) that took the team to 169 for five. Asked to bat, Kings started well, getting to 55 for one in the PowerPlay, but the Panthers' spinners pulled back, picking up wickets in regular intervals to reduce the home side to 107 for five. Shahrukh was at his flamboyant best, striking cleanly, but lacked support from his teammates. He gave the final flourish, smashing pacer S. Surya Anand for consecutive sixes in the 19th and finished the innings with a hat-trick of fours off Gurjapneet Singh. However, it was not enough for the Kings to avoid a second straight defeat in their backyard. The scores: Lyca Kovai Kings 169/5 in 20 overs (M. Shahrukh Khan 77 n.o.) lost to Siechem Madurai Panthers 171/3 in 17.5 overs (R. Ram Arvindh 64, B. Anirudh Sita Ram 37, N.S. Chaturved 46 n.o.). Toss: Panthers. Next match: At Salem (June 13): Idream Tiruppur Tamizhans vs SKM Salem Spartans (7.15 p.m.).

Shivam steers Dragons to convincing victory

Shivam Singh's unbeaten half-century (82 n.o., 50b, 5x4, 5x6) powered Dindigul Dragons to a convincing seven-wicket win over Lyca Kovai Kings in the opening match of TNPL-9 at the Sri Ramakrishna College ground here on Thursday. Chasing a moderate target of 150, opener Shivam started cautiously before seamlessly switching gears and delivering some lusty blows. Shivam, who was dropped on one, found able support from R. Vimal Khumar as the duo added 64 runs for the second wicket. The opener cut, swept and pulled en route his half-century. Once he crossed 50, he cut loose and closed out the game in style by smashing pacer Govinth for consecutive sixes as the defending champion romped home with 16 balls to spare. Earlier, Dragons' skipper R. Ashwin opted to field first, and his bowlers backed up the decision with a disciplined effort to restrict Kovai Kings to 149 for eight. Only B. Sachin put up a fight for the home team, scoring 51. The openers lacked intent and struggled to score boundaries against Ashwin and pacer Sandeep Warrier. Sachin and Andre Siddarth then came together for a 62-run alliance for the third wicket to set a platform for the Kings. Sachin was the aggressor in the partnership and was strong off the backfoot, targeting the square region behind the wicket on the off-side. However, a mix-up between the duo meant Andre was run out in the 13th over. From there, the Dragons struck at regular intervals to restrict the two-time champion to a below-par total and kickstart its title defence on the right note. The scores: Lyca Kovai Kings 149/8 in 20 overs (B. Sachin 51, Warrier 2/27, Ashwin 2/33, Periyasamy 2/30) lost to Dindigul Dragons 154/3 in 17.2 overs (Shivam Singh 82 n.o., Shahrukh Khan 2/26). Friday's match: IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans vs Chepauk Super Gillies (7.15 p.m.).
