PETA to sell 'kitten cakes' and 'fresh local Siamese' at seafood festival

PETA will be selling 'kitten cakes' at a seafood festival. The animal rights organisation is protesting against the Lymington Seafood Festival on Friday, July 11, by selling "locally caught tabbies," "fresh local Siamese" and "kitten cakes" at the event. The "provocative" display aims to "challenge people's speciesism" and "highlight that cats and crabs are the same in all the ways that matter." PETA senior campaigns manager, Kate Werner, said: "Crabs and other marine animals feel pain and terror just as cats and dogs do. "PETA urges anyone horrified by the thought of tucking into a tabby to extend that compassion to all animals and please, go vegan." A "kittenmonger" will be attending the event at Bath Road Park in Lymington to sell the "kitten cakes" at the entrance from 12.45pm. PETA is hoping to make people aware of the industry behind the meals, claiming that "live lobsters and crabs were impaled, torn apart and decapitated" at a crustacean abattoir. The charity also states that "chefs typically place live lobsters in pots of boiling water while they're still conscious" and that "every person who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals each year."

British rowers smash Pacific record to raise £50,000 for brain tumour foundation

A team of British adventurers has broken two world records by rowing unsupported across the Pacific Ocean – raising thousands of pounds to help families affected by brain tumours. The five-man Ocean5 crew completed the 2,800-nautical mile journey from Monterey, California, to Hanalei in Kauai, Hawaii, in just 32 days, six hours and 51 minutes, shattering the previous record of 54 days. Their expedition also saw 66-year-old businessman and team member Kevin Gaskell become the oldest person to row across the Pacific, according to the organisers of the World's Toughest Row. He was joined by his son Matt, 33, adventurer Tom Higham, 37, martial arts champion and Amazon explorer Patrick Deacon, 40, and performance therapist Stephen Greenan, 40. The team, who trained in Lymington, Hampshire, survived on freeze-dried meals, protein snacks and 10 litres of water each per day, while enduring severe exhaustion, sleep deprivation, salt sores, sea sickness and towering waves. Their carbon-fibre boat, Lady Jane II, powered by solar panels, carried enough food for 55 days and was equipped with three rowing positions and two small cabins. Before setting off, Mr Gaskell – a former managing director of Porsche, BMW and Lamborghini – described the challenge as the toughest they had faced. He said: 'This will test our resilience to the limit – the boat will not stop and we'll each be rowing for two hours on, two hours off.' The mission has raised more than £50,000 for The Lewis Moody Foundation, which supports people living with brain tumours. The foundation was set up by the former England rugby captain in 2015 following a family friend's diagnosis.

Brexit rules spark ‘clear demand' for more motorhome parking, lobby group says

More overnight parking options for campervans and motorhomes are needed in the UK to meet growing demand caused by post-Brexit travel restrictions, according to a lobby group. Boosting provision for these vehicles would generate more revenue for local businesses and increase the number of visitors to tourist destinations outside the peak summer season, the Campaign for Real Aires (Campra) said. Aires is a French word used to describe designated stopping places for motorcaravans – the collective term for motorhomes and campervans – which are much more common in continental Europe than the UK. Post-Brexit rules mean UK passport holders are prohibited from being in the Schengen area – which covers most of the European Union and some other European nations – for more than 90 days within a 180-day period. That means many UK-based motorcaravan users are seeking domestic destinations for overnight trips. But a survey of 6,731 users suggested 88% are dissatisfied with the UK's availability of overnight parking in desirable locations. The poll also indicated that motorcaravaners spend an average of £51 per day in local businesses and £23 per night on overnight parking or campsite fees. Many respondents commented on the UK's lack of infrastructure and welcoming attitude compared with continental Europe, Campra said. Last month, Hampshire County Council approved plans to ban campervans and motorhomes from staying overnight at the south coast beauty spot of Keyhaven, near Lymington. It claimed the move would 'bring order' to the area. Campra managing director Steve Haywood said welcoming motorcaravans to an area 'can be a hugely positive move'. He went on: 'There is a clear demand – emphasised by post-Brexit travel restrictions – for more overnight stay options in UK towns and cities, and those towns and cities could benefit hugely by embracing motorcaravans. 'More councils are seeing the benefits of providing facilities, instead of suffering the cost of enforcement and bans, not to mention the loss of potential revenue to businesses. 'In Fleetwood, Lancashire, for example, the introduction of overnight parking in the seafront car park for £5 per night has seen a huge boost in revenue for local shops, and has been so successful that additional facilities are now being planned for motorcaravanners. 'Every council that has operated a 12-month trial aire has been successful and made the overnight parking permanent.' Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency figures show more than 416,000 motorcaravans are registered in the UK. A spokesperson for the Local Government Association said: 'Policies around overnight motorcaravan parking and the provision of facilities are a matter for local councils.'

RNLI volunteer recognised in King's Honours list

A dedicated volunteer has been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours. Nick Hayward, from Lymington in Hampshire, has been honoured with a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in recognition of 44 years of unwavering commitment to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). Aged 18 when he joined the Lymington lifeboat crew in 1981, he was appointed helm (in command of the boat) three years later. "When the [honours] letter arrived from the Cabinet Office, I had to read it several times before it sank in. I'm still reading it to make sure it's correct," he said. Mr Hayward added: "I don't think I could have been more elated and humbled at the same time. "It would not have been possible without my family, friends and all at Lymington Lifeboat Station who have supported me over the last 44 years. "Being part of the RNLI family is a privilege." Throughout his time with the RNLI, Mr Hayward has trained many other members of the crew. In 1995, he took on the role of station mechanic, ensuring the lifeboat, launch vehicle and equipment were maintained to the highest possible standard and ready at a moment's notice. In 2011, he also became a deputy launch authority, providing a critical link between the Coastguard and lifeboat. Steve Billett, Lymington's lifeboat chairman, said: "What Nick has - and continues to achieve - is a shining example of what volunteering and commitment to the community really means." RNLI chief executive Peter Sparkes said: "I am so pleased to see this national recognition right across the RNLI, from the frontline delivery of our lifesaving services to our shops and fundraising groups."
