Wildfire south of Lytton, B.C., leads to evacuation alert
A wildfire around 10 kilometres south of Lytton, B.C., has led to an evacuation alert for five properties in the Fraser Canyon on Monday night. The Cantilever Bar wildfire was discovered late Monday afternoon on the west side of the Fraser River, and it is visible from the Trans-Canada Highway. It grew quickly and covered an area of 150 hectares as of 10 p.m. PT on Monday, with the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) deploying three helicopters and three ground attack crews to the site. Around 9:30 p.m. PT, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) issued an evacuation alert for five properties along Spencer Road South. Residents have been told to be ready to leave at a moment's notice as the wildfire, which is suspected to have been caused by human activity, approaches. It was sparked on the same day a heat warning was issued for the Fraser Canyon, which includes Lytton, as Environment Canada says that maximum temperatures in the region are expected to hit between 35 C and 37 C between Tuesday and Thursday. The BCWS said in a provincial situation report that above seasonal temperatures will be seen throughout B.C. this week, with the hottest areas set to be in the southern third of the province. "In addition, there is a significant chance of dry lightning that could impact nearly all regions of the province throughout the week," the service says. "This combination of rising temperatures, fuel drying and dry lightning increases the probability of new wildfires starting."

Ampol sees weaker first-half earnings on supply woes; reports lower margins
July 23 (Reuters) - Australia's top fuel retailer Ampol Ltd ( opens new tab on Wednesday forecast weaker half-year earnings as sea-freight conditions impacted its supply chain, and reported a 1.1% drop in second-quarter refining margins at its Lytton refinery. The company expects first-half earnings before interest and taxes on a replacement cost basis to be A$400 million ($262.04 million), compared with A$502.1 million a year earlier. The second-quarter refining margin at its Lytton refinery in Queensland, one of the company's key assets, decreased to $8.71 per barrel, down from $8.81 last year. Over the year, operational disruptions such as planned maintenance and loss of production days due to Cyclone Alfred, coupled with weak refining margins in Singapore, have weighed on refining margins and the output levels of the Queensland refinery. However, Lytton's refinery margin increased from the prior quarter's $6.07 per barrel owing to improved product crack — the difference between the price of crude oil and the prices of the refined petroleum products — in the later part of the year. The Sydney-based firm reported second-quarter total sales volume of 6,304 million liters (ML), down 4.7% from a year earlier. Its Lytton refinery output for the second quarter was 1,406 ML, compared to 1,420 ML logged a year earlier. The company's non-refining segments, convenience retail and New Zealand, performed well for the quarter. Grady Wulff, a senior market analyst at Bell Direct, noted that Ampol's convenience retail operations have been a key earnings driver, with resilient performance in this segment and New Zealand helping to cushion the impact of weaker refining results in the first half. Despite the mixed operational performance, shares gained ground, in tandem with the domestic energy sub-index (.AXEJ), opens new tab, which was lifted by steadying oil prices. Ampol stock rose as much as 4% to hit its highest since February 21. The company is slated to report its half-year financial results on August 18. ($1 = 1.5265 Australian dollars)

How Hot Can It Get? Scientists Are Struggling to Find an Answer
How hot can a heat wave really get? Before June 2021, scientists thought they knew. That's when one of the most extreme heat spikes ever observed hit western North America, leaving at least 1,400 people dead. Lytton, British Columbia, smashed the 84-year-old Canadian heat record on June 26, reaching 46.6 C (116F).

Fire sparked by RCMP trailer near Lytton is being held, says B.C. Wildfire Service
Social Sharing A wildfire near Lytton, B.C., that ignited when a wheel fell off an RCMP trailer is now classified as being held and is no longer likely to spread. The B.C. Wildfire Service says the change is due to the "significant efforts" of firefighters with the help of favourable weather, and that the Izman Creek blaze will no longer be considered a wildfire of note. Once the wildfire loses that classification — which indicates a fire is generating particular interest, is highly visible or is a threat to public safety — there will be no wildfires of note in B.C. The wildfire north of Lytton was sparked on July 1 by the RCMP trailer failure in what Mounties have said was an unfortunate incident, a day after the fourth anniversary of a fire that destroyed most of the village. It resulted in an evacuation order for three properties and an alert for 12 others. The wildfire service says staff will remain on site at the wildfire, which is listed as about 240 hectares in size as of Wednesday morning, to continue mop-up and to patrol the area to ensure it remains secure. The Izman Creek blaze is one of about 80 active fires across the province, about 20 per cent of which are classified as burning out of control. WATCH | New fire brings back memories of 2021 blaze, mayor says: 4 years after Lytton, B.C., burned, new wildfire north of town is 'triggering,' mayor says 6 days ago Duration 6:38 The wildfire burning closest to Lytton, B.C., is not expected to grow, but another north of the village has grown significantly in recent days. Mayor Denise O'Connor says the fires have triggered memories of the 2021 fire that burned down the entire village, including her own home. The wildfire service says about 77 per cent of the fires are lightning-caused, 20 per cent are human-caused and the rest are undetermined. The B.C. Wildfire Service said in a post to Facebook that it has also deployed air tankers to help wildfire suppression efforts on a blaze in Washington state, south of Highway 3, between Christina Lake and Trail, B.C. "At this time there is no threat to the Canada-U.S. border," the post says.
