Land near fire-hit car park on King's Dock gets £300k revamp
An area of land described as an "aesthetic blight" near the site of a major fire on King's Dock eight years ago is to be given a £300,000 revamp. On New Year's Eve 2017, the former multi-storey car park adjacent to the Arena and Convention Centre (ACC) Liverpool burnt down leading to the loss of more than 1,000 vehicles and the building's area has been cordoned off with hoardings ever City Council said it would now replace fencing and undertake landscaping works to make it available for use on event days. The council has full freehold ownership of the site, with extensive developments undertaken in 2008 to provide leisure, residential and conference facilities including the M&S Bank Arena, Exhibition and Convention Centre, and almost 2,000 residential housing units and hotels.A council report described the land near the car park as an "aesthetic blight on the area".The hoardings currently fence off what the authority described as a key piece of public realm that ACC Liverpool could activate to support its wider developing events offer. The work proposed would allow for water and power to support future events, visually improve the area and secure the space, the Local Democracy Reporting Service officer report said: "On the new landscaped area, ACC Liverpool will be responsible for the operations which will consist of a new food and beverage offer associated with both event and non-event days." Work is expected to be completed by 29 August. Listen to the best of BBC Radio Merseyside on Sounds and follow BBC Merseyside on Facebook, X, and Instagram. Olly Murs booed by his own fans as he makes awkward admission
Olly Murs faced boos at a packed show as he made an uncomfortable admission. And you don't need to know much about sport to know he was asking for it. When Murs decided to admit his true feelings about a subject close to his heart in front of a Liverpool crowd, the reaction was unsurprising. The Liverpool Echo reports that he had the crowd 'wrapped up around his finger' as he brought his 15 Years Of Hits tour to the city's M&S Bank Arena on Thursday. Thousands of fans packed into the venue for the show, part of his latest nationwide tour. Ryan Paton, who was there in the crowd for the Echo, said the X Factor singer "made sure the show felt unique to those there on the night, with enjoyable interactions with the crowd in between his back catalogue of songs." READ MORE: Ryanair passengers 'stuck' on airport floor with 'complete silence' from airline in holiday chaos READ MORE: Welsh billionaire you've probably never heard of who wasn't on the Sunday Times Rich List Pop fans will know that Olly is a cheeky chap. He also likes to have a laugh with the audience - which is how the moment in question came about. Olly gave his long-serving band member the chance to "embarrass" him on stage and share a photo from the singer's career. Olly told the crowd: "On this part of the show, I have absolutely no idea what is about to appear on that screen." The photo that was chosen was one of him touching the This Is Anfield sign at the home of Liverpool FC. That left Olly laughing - and he could probably guess where things were going. As the picture came up on a large screen, it split the crowd. There were loud cheers from Liverpool supporters - but boos from the Everton fans in the crowd. But this wasn't the problem. Olly then said: "Of course, this will probably get the biggest boo of the night. I am a Manchester United fan." The singer creased up as he was jeered by the crowd. He joked: "Shall I go?" It was all good-natured - and Olly makes no secret of his support for MUFC. The show continued as fans lapped up the pop hits. He also told them it had been a big week as he turned 41 on Wednesday. He marked it by performing a medley of 80s hits from the decade in which he was born. The Echo reports that there was a moving moment when Olly sung Dear Darling, a song he dedicated to his X Factor co-host, Caroline Flack, who died in 2020. He told fans: "I genuinely think about her every day. "I know that feeling of losing someone that you love very much. With this song, I want you to think of those people and sing with me." Fans shone the lights on their phone and sung along in what Ryan at the Echo said was "the standout moment of the evening".

Olly Murs asks 'shall I go?' as he's booed by crowd after on-stage admission
Olly Murs brought the house down at Liverpool's M&S Bank Arena this week with a performance that left fans both emotional and dancing along. At one point, however, the 40-year-old Essex-born star, currently on his 15 Years of Hits tour, had the crowd booing after he let his cheeky chappy side show while interacting with the audience at his sold-out gig. Midway through his energetic set, the former X Factor contestant stopped the show to reveal a Liverpool FC sign on the big screens, which inevitably sent his Evertonian fans into a frenzy. The chart-topping singer was in stitches during the segment where he gives his long-serving band a chance to embarrass him. The former Voice UK judge was quick to tell his Murs Army: 'At this part of the show, I have absolutely no idea what is about to appear on that screen.' To add to the frenzy of the booing crowd, he went on to add: 'This will probably get the biggest boo of the night. I am a Manchester United fan.' The star was cracking up at the louder boos from the audience and jeered, 'Shall I go?'. Thankfully for his paying fans, though, Olly stayed to perform more of his much-loved pop hits. Olly, who shot to fame after finishing runner-up on The X Factor in 2009, has been touring the UK to commemorate 15 years of his music. Wednesday's performance showcased hits from across his career, including Dance With Me Tonight, Dear Darlin' and Heart Skips a Beat, alongside a few of his new tunes. Olly had a major transformation ahead of his UK tour, wowing fans on Instagram as he shared a post showing off his new physique. His six-pack surprised his 4.8million followers as he shared that he is 'pumped and ready to get on the road'. More Trending His tour continues with dates across the UK before concluding later this month. Olly's Liverpool show follows his recent personal milestone of becoming a father for the first time in April 2023, when he and his wife, Amelia, welcomed their daughter, Madison. Earlier this year, he announced that he's set to become a dad once more, as bodybuilder Amelia expects baby number two. Got a story?
