State bans use of sirens during VIP movement: DGP issues strict order
Bengaluru: In a significant move aimed at enhancing public safety and curbing noise pollution, Karnataka's Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG & IGP) Dr. M.A. Saleem has issued an official order banning the use of sirens during the movement of VIPs across the state. The order, issued on Sunday, states that the use of sirens not only creates unnecessary disturbance on public roads but also potentially exposes the route of VIPs to unauthorized individuals, thereby increasing the risk to their security. Considering this, the DGP has directed that sirens must not be used for VIP convoys or movement. The directive also highlights that sudden use of sirens on public roads can inconvenience other motorists and may lead to accidents, especially when vehicles are forced to make abrupt movements to make way. The order recommends that any urgent coordination during VIP travel should be conducted through wireless communication channels rather than sirens. According to the guidelines laid down in the order, only emergency service vehicles such as ambulances, police vehicles, and fire brigades may use sirens, and only in genuine emergency situations. The DGP further emphasised that as per Supreme Court directives, no vehicle other than emergency services is permitted to use sirens. Even police vehicles are restricted from using sirens unless responding to an emergency. Violation of this rule will attract legal action under Section 190(2) of the Motor Vehicles Act, which could result in a fine along with up to three months of imprisonment. This decisive step by the Karnataka Police aims to ensure safer roads, reduce noise pollution, and maintain the secrecy and security of VIP movements.

BJP dubs Karnataka govt.'s Sadhana Samavesha ‘a celebration of non- performance'
Ahead of the State government's 'Sadhana Samavesha' to be held in Mysuru on Saturday, the BJP in the city dubbed it as a 'celebration of non-performance'. Addressing the media here on Thursday, senior functionaries of the city BJP said that the event was laughable, as there was nothing to celebrate. Party functionaries M.A. Mohan and former MLA L. Nagendra said that there was an 'administrative collapse' in the State and that the law and order situation had deteriorated. 'While there was an increase in crimes of various nature across the State, the police does not have a free hand to investigate and crackdown on the culprits due to the interference of the Congress leaders,' Mr. Mohan alleged. 'The only achievement of this government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is that it has survived for two years,' he added. The BJP leaders said that the Congress was content with just talking about the five guarantee schemes, but claimed that its benefits were questionable. 'While women have been given free rides under the Shakti scheme, the government has raised fuel charges, thus cross-subsidising the scheme with public money,' said Mr. Mohan. BJP leaders also criticised the State government for its 'inability' to make timely payment to the beneficiaries. 'This is a government which does not have funds to pay salaries to the government staff on time, and hence it is too much to expect timely disbursement of money under the scheme,' they added. The government's tenure has been marked by lack of any development works and this is due to the fact that none of the licensed contractors were keen to take up government works as their collective arrears was in excess of ₹33,000 crore, according to the BJP, which reiterated their earlier stand that the Sadhana Samavesha was nothing more than a show of strength. Schemes like the 'Yuva Nidhi' were criticised as being available only on paper by the BJP leaders, who said that in contrast, certain Central government programmes like the 'Mudra Yojana' offered real financial support to the youth. 'Narendra Modi is working to make people self-reliant, while this government is busy with publicity shows to hide its failures,' the BJP functionaries said.

CPI(M) chief proposes ‘digital satyagraha' for Gaza—switch off phones, laptops for half hour each day
From Saturday night, between 9 pm and 9.30 pm daily, the leader from Kerala has urged people to switch off their devices, such as mobile phones and desktops, as a symbolic act of solidarity with the Palestinians, now facing the double sword of war and starvation as Israel prevents international organisations from entering the region with humanitarian aid. M.A. Baby, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary and former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, has called for a week-long 'digital satyagraha' to protest the protracted Gaza war, which started on 7 October 2023. New Delhi: Hunger strikes are passé. Now, a senior Communist leader wants you to try a 'digital' fast. 'No social media, no messages, no comments, just 30 minutes of digital silence,' Baby's post on X read, adding that such a small act could register dissent against what he described as a 'genocide being carried out by Israel in occupied Gaza'. A close aide and successor to Sitaram Yechury in the party, Baby has served as the Education and Culture Minister in Kerala and represented the state in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Known for his Marxist style and Gandhian vocabulary, Baby's latest appeal blends 21st-century tools with vintage protest techniques. He came up with the X post to support Palestinians just days after United Nations Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese released a report naming 48 major technology companies, such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and IBM, as entities allegedly profiting from the Gaza war. The investigation has reportedly listed more than 1,000 such corporate entities. 'In this context, this digital fast is all the more relevant,' his post read. The CPI(M) leader's tweet joins a growing wave of international protests, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and accountability for corporate complicity through the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement targeting firms that directly benefit Israel. Moving away from large rallies or street demonstrations, Baby's proposed form of resistance fits neatly into a world run by algorithms: just log off.
