SHAH ALAM, July 16 (Bernama) -- Former Selangor Zakat Board (LZS) chief executive officer, Mohd Sabirin Mohd Sarbini, has been appointed the new secretary of the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) effective today. In a statement, MAIS announced that Mohd Sabirin, 55, succeeds Dr Ahmad Shahir Makhtar, whose term concluded yesterday. Mohd Sabirin holds a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Before joining LZS and subsequently MAIS, he held various positions in the corporate sector. At LZS, he served in several key capacities, including Head of the Collection Division and Head of Asnaf Distribution Operations, before assuming the role of CEO. He is also a certified Syariah Registered Financial Planner (RFP Syariah) under the Malaysian Financial Planning Council (MFPC), a member of the Malaysian Association of Tax Accountants (MATA), and holds a teaching certification under MAIS for the state of Selangor. MAIS expressed confidence that Mohd Sabirin's appointment will further strengthen the council's mission to enhance Islamic governance and administration in Selangor. The council also extended its appreciation to Ahmad Shahir for his dedication and service as secretary from July 16, 2019, until the end of his tenure. During his time at the helm, Ahmad Shahir led MAIS with distinction, overseeing the implementation of the MAIS Strategic Plan 2020-2024, which encompassed all Islamic affairs departments, agencies, and subsidiaries under its administration. He also championed the council's digital transformation initiatives, including the development of key systems such as e-Tauliah, Wasiat & Hibah (e-SISWA), and e-Faraid.

The Future of Selangor Islamic University (UIS): A Growing Reality?

Subscribe to our FREE Selangor Islamic University (UIS) is no longer unfamiliar to the 7.3 million residents of Selangor. Formerly known as Kolej Islam Darul Ehsan (KISDAR) when it was established in 1993, it was later upgraded to Kolej Universiti Islam Selangor (KUIS). On 20 July 2023, it reached a new milestone, officially becoming Selangor Islamic University (UIS). Today, UIS sits among the ranks of prestigious universities in Selangor such as Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). However, the journey to full global recognition is far from over. Based in Kajang, Selangor, UIS currently has around 5,600 students, offering 76 academic programmes across six faculties—a promising start that still presents challenges ahead as it aims to solidify its place on the international stage. Recently, I attended a hi-tea event hosted by UIS in Bangi, Selangor, which brought together media representatives, the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS), and UIS administrators. The event served as a platform to announce the 27th Convocation Ceremony and the official proclamation. In his keynote address, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer Dato' Prof. Dr. Mohd Farid Ravi Abdullah candidly acknowledged the difficult path the university has taken to reach its current status. Despite being a fully owned Islamic higher learning institution under MAIS, which has played a crucial role in promoting Islamic scholarship and unity in Selangor, the challenge of evolving into a globally competitive university remains real. Prof. Dr. Farid stressed the importance of innovating academic programmes to keep pace with the rapidly changing digital world. As a private higher education institution (IPTS), UIS is competing not only with other private universities but also with long-established public universities across Malaysia. On 19 July, UIS is set to witness another historical moment as Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin will be officially proclaimed as the first Chancellor of UIS. This raises a crucial question: Is UIS ready to face the reality of higher education competition and attract more school leavers and pre-university graduates (SPM/STPM holders) to enrol? According to Prof. Dr. Farid, the university is actively rebranding itself as an entrepreneurial university—offering more than just theory-based education. Students are now being equipped with practical skills and business acumen to become young entrepreneurs capable of marketing their talents and products. For example, traditional programmes such as Usuluddin have been rebranded as Usuluddin and Multimedia, Al-Quran and Sunnah transformed into Al-Quran, Sunnah and Communication, and Education is now integrated with Tahfiz studies. These innovations are designed to widen students' skill sets while preparing them to face future challenges—especially in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The relevance of AI cannot be overstated. On 15 November 2024, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, speaking at the APEC CEO Summit in Lima, Peru, emphasized the need for AI development to be aligned with Malaysia's moral, cultural, and religious values. 'In a country where the majority are Muslims… we must implement ethical AI governance to safeguard national harmony,' said the Prime Minister. Apart from academic innovation, UIS also plans to strengthen its twinning programmes with universities in the Middle East (Egypt and Jordan) as well as in Australia and New Zealand, through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with top institutions in these regions. Prof. Dr. Farid believes such initiatives will give UIS students the opportunity to gain international exposure and added value in their educational journey. Now entering its third decade since establishment, UIS has produced thousands of graduates. At its 27th convocation, a total of 1,528 graduates received their scrolls across various levels of study—each equipped with the knowledge to face the future. With these carefully planned strategies and visionary leadership, UIS is no longer just an Islamic institution producing graduates in religious studies. It now stands poised to contribute across multiple sectors of national development, disproving the outdated perception that Islamic university graduates are only relevant in religious fields. Shah Alam marriage retreat exposed as bizarre sex ritual cult

WHAT began as a marriage motivation retreat promising empowerment and confidence ended with shocking allegations of rituals, sensual performances, and spiked drinks. Held at a convention centre in Shah Alam last September, the program's final night reportedly took a dark turn. A participant revealed on Facebook that around 50 women gathered in a dimly lit hall, where facilitators known as 'Cleopatra' entered to romantic music before the founder appeared, dressed provocatively and dancing in front of stunned guests. Participants were then offered a homemade drink containing what was claimed to be a mix of 'magic mushrooms' from Bali and chocolate, described as sweet, spicy, and throat-irritating. Within minutes, many allegedly experienced waves of arousal, boldness, and euphoria. The night escalated when female facilitators performed sensual dances, with some engaging in lewd acts among themselves. The program also conducted rituals described as 'spiritual cleansing' and 'rebirth', echoing practices from other faiths, which participants deemed contrary to Islamic teachings. Shockingly, these revelations surfaced after authorities confirmed the organiser had previously been summoned in 2022 by the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) over similar concerns. Although instructed to amend modules to comply with Islamic guidelines, no official complaint was received about the recent program until the exposé went viral. JAIS Director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said an investigation is underway under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment, with several individuals set to be called this week. Public outrage continues to grow as authorities vow stern action against practices violating Islamic law. —July 13, 2025 Main image: Sinar Harian

Shah Alam organiser summoned by MAIS over immoral acts in 2022

SHAH ALAM: The organiser of a marital motivation programme, previously flagged for inappropriate content, has resurfaced in controversy after allegations of immoral activities during a session last year. The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) had summoned the organiser in 2022 following complaints about their modules. Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, director of the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), confirmed that a former participant had lodged a report in 2022. The organiser was instructed to revise certain modules to align with Islamic principles. However, no reports were filed regarding the recent viral allegations of misconduct at a convention centre in September last year. Mohd Shahzihan stated that JAIS will summon individuals on Tuesday (July 15) to assist in the investigation. The department is collaborating with the police and will probe the matter under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995, which addresses false doctrines. 'JAIS takes such matters seriously and will act against any activity contradicting Islamic law and ethical values,' he said. The public is urged to share information via JAIS' hotline at 1800-88-2424 or by visiting their office. - Bernama

MAIS Pledges To Uphold Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah Principles In Selangor's Islamic Administration

SHAH ALAM, July 7 (Bernama) -- The Selangor Islamic Religious Council (MAIS) remains steadfast in ensuring that Islamic administration in the state adheres to the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed, and is free from the influence of deviant teachings. Its chairman, Datuk Salehuddin Saidin, said MAIS, in collaboration with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), the Selangor Mufti Department and other agencies, would intensify efforts to raise awareness and deepen understanding of the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed among the people in the state. 'This includes Islamic teaching programmes conducted by certified religious instructors as well as mosque and surau-based religious activities,' he said in a statement today. Salehuddin said reinforcing the position of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah is in line with the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, as the state's Head of Religion, who has emphasised the importance of safeguarding the purity of faith and the need to define the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah's position within the legal framework. 'It is hoped that a deep understanding and appreciation of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed will form the core foundation for strengthening unity among Muslims,' he said. At the same time, Salehuddin expressed his appreciation to the State Islamic Religious Affairs and Cultural Innovation Committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah, and all parties involved in preparing the Administration of the Religion of Islam (State of Selangor) (Amendment) Enactment Bill 2025, which was passed today by the Selangor State Legislative Assembly. The Bill seeks to clarify the criteria for appointing members of MAIS other than ex-officio members, members of the Fatwa Committee, the Credentials Committee and the Credentials Appeal Committee, who must adhere to the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed. The amendment could also prevent the appointment of individuals with extreme or liberal views, or those inclined towards teachings that deviate from the Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah creed, in the administration of Islamic affairs in Selangor. Earlier, the Selangor State Legislative Assembly unanimously passed the Bill after the third reading by Mohammad Fahmi, following a debate by six assemblymen at today's sitting.
