BKK: Dr Annuar dismisses claims of false promise, says over 21,000 applications stringently verified

(From second left) Dr Annuar and TCS executive director Dr Amin Aznizan symbolically hand over the aid to a TCS student representative. KUCHING (July 18): More than half of the 42,000 applications for the RM1,200 Special Financial Assistance (BKK) for Sarawak students have been verified, with the remainder expected to be processed by the end of this month. Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the verification process is ongoing and requires extra care as the scheme involves public funds. 'We have to be meticulous about it. We cannot afford to give it to someone who is not eligible and we also don't want to miss someone who is,' he told reporters after handing over education aid to underprivileged students at Technology College Sarawak (TCS) here. Dr Annuar said this in response to accusations that BKK was a false promise. 'That (42,000 applicants) is a whole lot and it (the system) is jammed up. The accusation that the BKK is a lie and an empty promise is not true,' he explained. He pointed out the verification is based on letters from universities, which has slowed down the process. 'Initially, we thought it could be done quickly, but this is the first time we are implementing this scheme. 'After this, only new intakes will require verification,' he said. Dr Annuar pledged that payment to eligible students will not be an issue as alternative transfer methods are available for those without S Pay Global accounts. BKK was scheduled to be officially launched by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg on June 28, with approved applicants to receive their first disbursement immediately after. Dr Annuar also shared plans for the Siswa Balik Sekolah programme, which encourages students to give back to society during semester breaks by assisting primary school pupils and promoting interest in mathematics and science. Discussions are being held with the Education Department and Sarawak- universities including Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak, i-CATS University College, University Technology Sarawak (UTS), and Curtin University Malaysia, to integrate the initiative with General Studies (MPU) under community engagement requirements. During today's event, 118 TCS underprivileged students each received RM1,000 in education aid from Yayasan Taqwa-Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP) to help cover costs such as transportation, meals, and learning materials. As a charitable arm of MAIWP, Yayasan Taqwa is dedicated to distributing zakat and implementing education welfare programmes. The collaboration with TCS marks a strategic effort to support affordable higher education, particularly in Sarawak where accessibility remains a challenge for many. BKK Dr Annuar Rapaee lead

PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council-Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) has contributed RM247,760 in wakalah funds to Putrajaya Hospital for the purchase of essential medical equipment. The donation, sourced from zakat contributors, will support over 30 types of medical tools, enhancing patient care services. The funds were pooled from multiple contributors, including the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) with RM134,560, the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) with RM50,000, and the remaining RM63,200 from employer and individual wakalah allocations. The funds have already been used to procure critical hospital equipment, including diathermy machines, defibrillators, and ECG machines. Dr Nor'Aishah Abu Bakar, Federal Territories Director of Health, expressed gratitude for the initiative, stating, 'The donated equipment will greatly benefit hospital staff and improve patient comfort.' PPZ-MAIWP Channels Wakalah Funds Of RM247,760 To Putrajaya Hospital

PUTRAJAYA, July 17 (Bernama) -- The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council-Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) today contributed RM247,760 in wakalah funds to Putrajaya Hospital for the purchase of over 30 types of medical equipment. The donation was made possible through the wakalah funds of several zakat contributors - the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), which contributed RM134,560; the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), which contributed RM50,000; and the remaining RM63,200 from employer and individual wakalah allocations. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, who officiated the symbolic handover ceremony, described the donation as more than just financial aid, but also a testament to the spirit of empathy and a strong sense of social responsibility, particularly towards the country's healthcare system. 'We all recognise that the healthcare sector today faces numerous challenges, from rising patient numbers to increasingly complex treatment demands. 'This contribution benefits not only individuals but institutions that serve the public, such as hospitals. It proves that zakat is not limited to personal distribution but can also enhance the overall capacity of our social system,' he said. Wakalah is a policy under which MAIWP returns a portion of zakat or tithe payments to contributors, typically organisations or corporations, allowing them to channel the funds directly to eligible recipients (asnaf). The funds have already been used to procure essential hospital equipment, including diathermy machines, defibrillators, electrocardiogram (ECG) machines, and various other medical tools to support patient care and funeral management services. Earlier in the day, Dr Mohd Na'im handed over a mock cheque to Dr Nor'Aishah Abu Bakar, Federal Territories Director of Health, and toured the Putrajaya Hospital's Paediatric Endocrinology Ward. Also present at the event were Putrajaya Hospital director Dr Suraya Amir Husin, acting chief executive officer of MAIWP Datuk Mohd Nizam Yahya, and chief executive officer of PPZ-MAIWP Datuk Abdul Hakim Amir Osman.

UPSI to honour late Nurly Sahirah with Quran gallery by 2027

JERTIH: Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) will establish a gallery named after Nurly Sahirah Azman, one of its students who perished in the East-West Highway accident in Gerik, Perak, last month. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the Nurly Sahirah Gallery will be located in the university's new Institute of Tahfiz and Turath Islami Education (I-Furqan) faculty, expected to be completed by 2027. 'The gallery is a tribute from UPSI to this remarkable student, who, as we know, was found tightly embracing the Quran at the time of her passing. 'With her parents' consent, we hope to display her handwritten Quran manuscript alongside other copies. 'We believe this can inspire those who memorise the Quran (hafiz and hafizah) to refine their techniques, such as by copying the holy book by hand themselves,' he told reporters after visiting her family at Kampung Gong Pasir in Kerandang today. Mohd Na'im said the gallery would also showcase other copies of the Quran and religious texts as reference materials for students and the wider public. He urged the public, including private sector players, to contribute to a waqf (endowment) fund to further support and strengthen the gallery's development. Mohd Na'im also called on the public, especially the younger generation, to draw 'ibrah' (moral lessons) from the exemplary character and deep devotion to the Quran shown by the late Nurly Sahirah. Nurly Sahirah, 23, was one of the 15 UPSI students who died on the morning of June 9 when a chartered bus from Jertih heading to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned following a collision with a Perodua Alza on the East-West Highway. The crash injured 33 others, including the bus driver and co-driver, as well as the other vehicle's driver and three passengers. Earlier today, Mohd Na'im visited the families of five UPSI students who lost their lives, as well as five others who were injured in the tragic incident. He presented financial contributions of RM7,500 to each bereaved family and RM4,000 to each injured student. He explained that the assistance for the families of the deceased comprised RM5,000 from Yayasan Taqwa (Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council – MAIWP), RM1,000 from the Malaysian Islamic Economic Development Foundation (YAPEIM), RM1,100 from the Musa'adah Fund, a collaboration between the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and the Malaysia Waqf Foundation and RM400 from the Federal Territories Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP). For the injured students, the contribution included RM2,000 from Yayasan Taqwa (MAIWP), RM1,000 from YAPEIM, RM600 from the Musa'adah Fund (JAKIM-YWM) and RM400 from PPZ-MAIWP. 'For the remaining families and victims whom we could not visit today, insya-Allah, the contributions will be delivered in stages as soon as possible through the relevant agencies,' he said, adding that each family and victim visited today also received a food basket worth RM150 contributed through the Musa'adah Fund JAKIM. - Bernama

Bursa Malaysia, Grab channel zakat to aid 500 kidney patients

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 500 kidney patients from the asnaf group in the Federal Territories will receive RM300 Grab ride vouchers each to help ease transportation to dialysis treatment centres. The RM150,000 contribution was made through wakalah zakat funds from Bursa Malaysia (RM100,000) and Grab Malaysia (RM50,000), under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP). Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the initiative aims to ease the financial burden of patients who require long-term dialysis treatment. 'With the high cost of transportation, especially for those who need to travel several times a week, this burden can be overwhelming. 'This contribution may not be much, but I hope it can at least help make things easier for the patients so they can focus better on their treatment,' he said at the Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ)-MAIWP Ziarah Kasih programme at the Batu Muda MAIWP-PICOMS Haemodialysis Centre here today. Also present were University College of MAIWP International (UCMI) chief executive officer and vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Noor Inayah Yaakub, Bursa Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Fad'l Mohamed and Grab Malaysia country operations and mobility director Rashid Shukor. Meanwhile, Fad'l said the wakalah zakat contribution reflected Bursa Malaysia's commitment to supporting initiatives that bring a positive impact to society. 'We believe a company's success is not only measured by financial performance or operational excellence, but also by its contribution to community wellbeing and sustainability practices,' he said. Fad'l added that the collaboration with PPZ-MAIWP was an example of how zakat could be effectively channelled to ease the burden of the underprivileged. He said Bursa Malaysia would continue to play an active role in leveraging zakat as a social finance tool, while encouraging public-listed companies to give back to the community.
