‘Phenomenal' Mark English breaks Irish 800m record yet again – and enters rarefied air in the process
MARK ENGLISH broke his Irish record with a sizzling run in the 800m in the Netherlands yesterday. The Donegal lad, 32, clocked a time of 1:43.92 to smash the record. Mark English breaks Irish record with 800m win in Netherlands
MARK ENGLISH BROKE his own Irish 800m record tonight as he triumphed at the FBK Games in Hengelo in the Netherlands. The Donegal native set a new national record with his time of 1:43.92. Advertisement In the process English became the first Irishman to run under 1:44, as he ran clear of Yanis Meziane of France and Peyton Craig of Australia to win. The 32-year-old will race again on Thursday night in Oslo in the Diamond League. Tonight's result continues English's excellent form this year after claiming a bronze medal in March in the European Indoor Athletics Championships at 800m level. That achievement was also earned in the Netherlands in Apeldoorn and was the fifth European medal of his career.

The Donegal star clocked 1:44.34 for victory in Bydgoszcz, securing automatic qualification for the World Athletics Championships in the process. English finished ahead of Croatia's Marino Bloudek (1:44.74) and Filip Ostrowski of Poland (1:44.96), who both ran personal bests in a highly-competitive race. Elsewhere at the same meet in Bydgoszcz, Cathal Doyle finished third the men's 1500m. The Dubliner clocked 3:34.67, earning coveted ranking points to improve his chances for qualification for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September. Jodie McCann, meanwhile, was eighth in the women's 1500m in 4:09.78.
