SMC Makes Malaysia Book Of Records With 18.3m Melanau Swing

SIBU, July 13 (Bernama) -- The Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) with the itut, an 18.3-metre traditional Melanau swing, built as a highlight of this year's Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF). Erected at Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 by members of the Persatuan Kebajikan Melanau Kampung Nangka, the ride attracted a total of 2,288 visitors, exceeding the initial target of 2,000, thanks to the favourable weather throughout the 10-day festival, which began on July 3. SMC chairman Clarence Ting Ing Horh received the MBOR certificate from its representative, Edwin Yeoh, during the closing ceremony of the 21st edition of BCF last night, officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. Dr Sim said BCF 2025 had successfully showcased the rich diversity of Borneo's culture, music and ethnic traditions through a variety of performances, community-driven activities and cultural exhibitions. 'Over the past 10 days, the public has had the opportunity to witness the creativity and traditions of diverse communities, which also helped strengthen unity and reinforce the Bornean identity,' he said in his speech read by the State Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee. He extended his appreciation to the individuals, government agencies, cultural practitioners, traders, and enforcement officers involved for their commitment in ensuring the smooth running of this year's festival. Dr Sim noted that events like the festival not only serve as entertainment platforms but also play a crucial role in strengthening social bonds, promoting tourism and enhancing public well-being. 'These are key elements in building resilient, cohesive, and culturally-rooted communities,' he added. He congratulated SMC and its co-organisers on what he called one of the most successful editions of BCF, expressing hope that the spirit of unity and cultural appreciation shown throughout will continue to thrive in the community.

MCMC identifies 10 subsidiary instruments to facilitate Online Safety Act implementation

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has identified 10 subsidiary instruments, including regulations and codes, to facilitate the effective implementation of the Online Safety Act 2025, says Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. She said the instruments were at various stages of development, with prioritisation guided by the need to ensure alignment with the act's objectives and scope. She said the development of the regulations is contingent upon completion of the Regulatory Impact Analysis (RIA) by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC), followed by approval from the Attorney General's Chambers (A-GC). "MCMC anticipates completing the development of the subsidiary instruments between Q4 2025 and Q2 2026, subject to the complexity and readiness of each item," she said at The Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) 30th Anniversary celebration here tonight. Also present were the 8th Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang Datuk Seri Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, MBOR chairman Datuk Seri Dr Michael Tio, MBOR chief executive officer Christopher Wong, Bernama CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama Head of TV, Nor Hamzeela Md Hambali. Meanwhile, during her speech, Teo said MBOR would be certifying a new national entry for a book on child sexual grooming by Mohamed Nazri Prem Nasir on Aug 2 at the Universiti Malaya. She said child sexual grooming was one of the core concerns addressed under the Online Safety Act 2025, a landmark legislation aimed at creating a safer digital space, especially for young and vulnerable users. She said the upcoming 13-episode television series, Malaysia Luar Biasa, produced in collaboration with Bernama, noting that the programme would spotlight 30 to 40 national records featuring extraordinary Malaysians. "Notably, the programme will debut during the National Day celebration week, making it even more special as we honour not just our nation's independence but also the spirit, resilience, and excellence of Malaysians who have made their mark. "It's a timely reminder that patriotism can be expressed through achievement and that greatness can come from every corner of our beloved country," she said. The programme will officially premiere on August 26, 2025, at 8.30pm on Bernama TV (Astro 502). Teo said the significant milestone would add to Bernama's inspiring achievements, which also included a record in MBOR for its participation in the "Longest Non-Stop Multi-language National Broadcast." She said Bernama TV, then known as Bernama News Channel (BNC), was one of the key platforms delivering the historic 25-hour non-stop national broadcast in four languages, held from Sept 16 to 17, 2019, in conjunction with Malaysia Day. Meanwhile, Teo also lauded the National Information Dissemination Centre's (Nadi) achievements at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Awards 2025 in Geneva earlier this week, through its Pulau Banggi Initiative and Pulau Ketam Stingray II Project. She said as of June 30, a total of 1,097 Nadi centres had been successfully established out of the 1,099 planned nationwide, while the remaining two centres in Sabah were in the final stages of implementation. "This near-complete rollout is a testament to the government's commitment to digital inclusivity and ensuring that no one is left behind," she said. – Bernama

Hot FM enters MBOR for longest non-stop radio broadcast on Mount Kinabalu

KUALA LUMPUR: Radio station Hot FM today received recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) for conducting the 'Longest Non-Stop Radio Broadcast on Mount Kinabalu'. Media Prima Audio chief executive officer Nazri Noran said the recognition demonstrates that radio broadcasting is no longer confined to the studio. With today's advanced technology, radio in Malaysia can now be broadcast from virtually anywhere, including in challenging environments, he said. "Following our success on Mount Kinabalu, we are now preparing the Bekpes Hot crew to go on air from under the sea and many other locations. "Mount Kinabalu was the first challenge we undertook, and going forward, we aim to broadcast from more locations with Bekpes Hot and Hot FM," he told BH today. The Bekpes Hot climb team comprised popular presenters KJ, Johan, Fara, and AG, along with several expedition partners including Datuk Muqharabbin Mokhtarrudin; Selangor FC's Head of Sports Medicine, who served as the expedition's medical officer and health advisor Dr Hazwan Khair; actress Ozlynn Waty and the Hot FM crew. The recognition was presented by Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching and MBOR Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Michael Tio at the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Malaysia Book of Records Sdn Bhd. Meanwhile, when asked about plans to conduct an underwater radio broadcast, Nazri said it may take place this August. "They are currently preparing, as it's quite challenging to broadcast from underwater. "That's why detailed planning is required with professional assistance from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). "We will then look at the technical aspects to ensure there are no interruptions when they are broadcasting from beneath the sea," he said. During the same event, MBOR also honoured media practitioners for their unwavering support in shaping "Extraordinary Malaysia". Media Prima's Direct Solutions Events and Activations general manager Eileen Lim accepted the award on behalf of Media Prima Television Networks, while Deputy Group Managing Editor Farrah Naz Karim accepted on behalf of New Straits Times Press Bhd.
