Mercedes-Benz brings Microsoft Teams calls to cars

Mercedes-Benz has expanded its partnership with Microsoft to bring popular business tools, including Teams, into its cars. The partnership introduces advanced Microsoft business productivity and collaboration tools, starting with the all-new CLA. The productivity enhancements will be rolled out this summer, starting with the powered fourth-generation MBUX in the new CLA. The updated Meetings for Teams app in Mercedes-Benz vehicles now allows drivers to participate in Teams calls using the in-car camera, ensuring compliance with local laws and focusing on safety. The app automatically disables the video stream when the camera is activated to prevent driver distraction. Additionally, the app features a new dashboard with upcoming meetings, quick access to frequent contacts, and an expanded chat function, all designed to enhance productivity while driving. Mercedes-Benz is the first to natively integrate Microsoft Intune into a vehicle operating system, creating a secure workspace on wheels. This integration into allows customers to manage business and private data separately and provides IT administrators with tools to control access rights and security policies. The integration supports productivity apps like MBUX Notes and Calendar and will be available in Europe and the US. The collaboration also aims to bring Microsoft 365 Copilot into Mercedes-Benz vehicles, marking one of the first in-car applications of generative AI. The advanced AI will assist users in summarising emails, retrieving client information, and managing tasks through voice commands, potentially making the vehicle a third workspace alongside the office and home office. Mercedes-Benz Group chairman of the board of management Ola Källenius said: 'Through our industry-leading collaboration with Microsoft, we are making it even easier for our customers to stay productive while on the move. By integrating the latest Microsoft workspace tools, such as Microsoft Teams, directly into our new operating system, we've created an intuitive and safe user experience that boosts efficiency and reduces distractions at the same time.' Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz team up to develop connected vehicle software

Germany's automakers – the Volkswagen Group, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz – are teaming with up the nation's auto suppliers to jointly develop underlying software for vehicles. They are part of a consortium of 11 companies brought together by Germany's Automotive Industry Association (VDA) that will develop an open-source software stack, which will authenticate car components and handle communication between them as well as with cloud services, customer interfaces, and the overarching operating systems of vehicles. Most of the software being developed by the consortium will be 'non-differentiating', and not items that drivers or passengers will directly interact with. This means that user interfaces, such as BMW's iDrive and Mercedes-Benz's MBUX, will continue to be developed in-house, and remain completely distinct from each other. Members of the consortium are also free to continue developing, distributing and using their own software as required. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. But by coming together, the companies hope to bring down the cost of software development, while also speeding up new model delivery times 'in order to stay competitive in the global market'. Established automakers from Europe, Asia and the US have largely been caught flat-footed by the Chinese automotive industry's speedy rise up the leaderboard over the last few years. Many factors have contributed to their success, including sharp pricing, more appealing designs, and eye-catching user-facing technology. Thanks in part to their large home market, Chinese automakers have also been able to iterate their designs and technologies at a fierce pace. The consortium plans to have the first version of its software stack available for use in development vehicles by 2026, and hopes to have its tech in showrooms by 2030. Other companies involved in the consortium include Bosch, Continental, ETAS, Hella, Qorix, Valeo Brain, Vector, and ZF. According to Automobil Woche, talks are already under way to bring French automakers and suppliers into the consortium via that country's automotive association.

Why AI Stock Cerence Was Pushing Higher This Week

Its in-car, artificial intelligence-boosted technology will be prominent in an upcoming Mercedes model. The company also notched a win in a patent infringement dispute. 10 stocks we like better than Cerence › Two developments over the past few days have sent Cerence (NASDAQ: CRNC) stock skyward. According to data compiled by S&P Global Market Intelligence, shares of the company -- which specializes in developing artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for in-car systems -- were rising by almost 13% week to date as of Friday before market open. Both developments occurred on Thursday, with the first being Cerence's announcement that its technology packed into Mercedes-Benz's latest in-car "infotainment" system will soon get its initial rollout. This tech, rolled into the storied carmaker's latest version of its Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), is to be included in the new, soon-to-be-released 2026 electric CLA sedan. The automotive incumbent and Cerence have been partnering on MBUX for quite some time. The version that's being introduced with the upcoming CLA features advanced conversational capabilities powered by Cerence's AI solutions. These include neural speech recognition and natural language understanding, among other features, the company said. Later that day, Cerence scored a victory with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which was considering a patent infringement claim made by Korean electronics giant Samsung. The USPTO granted Cerence's request for it not to move forward with a Samsung effort to challenge the validity of the disputed patents. While such a win doesn't necessarily mean Cerence will ultimately prevail in the case, it does tilt the proceeding in its favor. Of the two news items, I'd say the Mercedes one is the more significant. Drivers of the German company's cars are now going to have direct, and often meaningful, interactions with Cerence's technology. There's no better way to boost a company's reputation; hopefully for shareholders, the system will perform well on deployment.
