Three dead, dozens injured after fall from upper stand in Algeria
Three spectators died and more than 70 others were injured after falling from the upper stand of the 5 July 1962 Stadium in Algiers, following MC Alger's win in the Algerian top-flight league for the second season in a row, the Algerian ministry of health said on Sunday. "The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded," the Algerian ministry of health said in a statement via Facebook, adding: "Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16." Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune offered his condolences and wishing a speedy recovery for the injured. "It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands," MC Alger said earlier in an Instagram post. The club has yet to comment on the additional fatalities. Local media reports said the spectators fell after a fence in the upper stand broke, with El Heddaf TV's Facebook page posting a video showing part of a railing collapsed onto the lower tier.

Fans were packed inside the 5 July 1962 Stadium to watch Mouloudia Club d'Alger (MC Alger) play, as the club celebrated winning the league title. But something terrible happened. A part of the upper stands broke, and many fans fell. What was supposed to be a night of celebration turned to horror and at least three families are mourning, and the videos out of the stadium have gained international attention. Algerian health officials report three deaths and more than 70 injuries The tragedy occurred when a barrier broke in the upper stands, sending people tumbling into the seats below. The Algerian Ministry of Health confirmed that in total three people died + more than 70 were injured. In a statement published on Facebook, it was reported that 38 were transported to Beni Messous Hospital, 27 were sent to Ben Aknoun Hospital, and 16 were sent to Bab El Oued hospital. MC Alger later posted on Instagram, mourning the loss of Younes Amgozi, one of their supporters who fell from the stands and died. CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe said: 'We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and the injuries sustained by the football spectators.' Additionally sending condolences to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the Algerian Government, and the Federation Algerienne de Football under Walid Sadi, Motsepe. He added: 'We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery and pray to Allah to be with them… CAF will continue to provide whatever help is possible.' Three football supporters have died, and over 80 others have been injured in a devastating stadium disaster at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, Algeria. The horrific event took place at the end of a match between MC Alger and NC Magra at the Stade du 5 Juillet, which holds around 64,200 people The disaster occurred as jubilation turned to tragedy post-match when MC Alger secured the league championship following a goalless draw with celebrations cut short by a barrier collapse. This resulted in fans falling from the upper tier of the stands, leading to chaos. The Algerian Ministry of Health released grave figures in their statement, which said: "The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded. "Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16." MC Alger's players and officials expressed their grief and solidarity, offering blood donations to aid those affected by the dreadful accident. Amidst mourning, the club confirmed the loss of longtime fan Younes Amguzzi, reports the Mirror. In a message relayed by officials at the club, they said: "It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands. "The board of directors, all members of management, all the team and players, come forward with sincere condolences and the most sincere condolences to all the family members of the deceased and their family." Event organisers immediately put a stop to any further festivities planned for MC Alger's championship victory as emergency services were called to the scene. Following the tragic event, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his heartfelt condolences to those affected by the calamity. On X, he shared: "Following the painful incident that befell the supporters of MC Alger at the Stade du 5 Juillet, I can only pray for the soul of the deceased supporter. May God have mercy on him and grant him a place in his vast paradise. "We offer our condolences to his family, his fellow supporters and the MC Alger team. I pray for the recovery of those injured in the incident and their swift return to their loved ones." The stadium was christened after the date Algeria proclaimed independence in July 1962. It once held 110,000 spectators during an international friendly match between Algeria and Serbia in 2010. However, to meet modern football safety regulations, the venue's capacity has been reduced to 64,200. Prior to the tragic incident, there had been intentions to safely expand the stadium's capacity to accommodate 80,000 spectators.

However, during the euphoria, tragedy struck amid the celebrations in the packed-out Stade du 5 Juillet [5 July Stadium]. Dozens of fans fell from the upper stands of the 64,200-capacity stadium. Local reports suggested a section of the security barrier collapsed in the upper tier, meaning the jubilant supporters had nothing to stop them from falling to the stands below. More than 70 people have been treated in hospitals - but three sadly passed away, the health ministry confirmed. The Algerian Ministry of Health said: 'The Beni Messous University Hospital received 38 injured people, while three deaths were recorded. 'Ben Aknoun Hospital also received 27 injured people, while Bab El Oued Hospital received 16.' MC Alger posted once the first death had been confirmed. They wrote: 'It is with great sadness and sorrow and with hearts that we received the news of our supporter Younes Amguzzi, who passed away after falling from the upper stands.' News agency Reuters reported that several MC Alger players and staff went to the hospitals to donate blood for the injured. The trophy presentation was postponed as a result of the desperately sad and worrying scenes.
