Man arrested 5 years after fatal hit-and-run crash in Miami Gardens, deputies say
Renee Symonette's death was abrupt and violent. An evening drive down a Miami neighborhood five years ago was cut short when a 19-year-old rammed into her at breakneck speed, killing her. Now, Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies say they've tracked down and arrested the man responsible — and this wasn't his first homicide. On the night of Oct. 7, 2020, Symonette was driving a white 2014 Mercedes-Benz C250 along Northwest 37th Avenue in Miami Gardens, an arrest warrant read. Unbeknownst to her, Malcolm Antonio Lumpkin, now 24, was racing toward Symonette in the opposite direction at an 'extremely high rate of speed,' changing lanes erratically. Symonette began to 'safely' make a left turn after waiting for traffic to clear at the intersection of Northwest 179th Street, authorities said. But as she drove into opposite lanes of traffic, Lumpkin slammed into her car, head-on, at 89 mph in his black 2016 Nissan Maxima. The Maxima spun and crashed into a chain link fence, as the Mercedes-Benz rotated and stopped in the street. Lumpkin and his passenger jumped out of the car as it became engulfed in flames, the warrant read. Symonette was pronounced dead by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, while her front seat passenger was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with a non-life-threatening hip injury. The ensuing investigation revealed that while Lumpkin did have a valid learner's license, there was no licensed driver over 21 in the passenger seat, which is required by law. Detectives also found Lumpkin had run a red light just before the fatal crash four blocks away and nearly struck two cars. It's not clear what investigative steps were taken over the next five years, but Lumpkin still found himself in handcuffs Monday in an unrelated brush with law enforcement. An MDSO deputy working with the Robbery Intervention Detail spotted Lumpkin driving a 2019 black Nissan Maxima with a tag cover, which is against Florida law. After trying to pull over Lumpkin, he sped off from the deputy but was caught after crashing the car. When police conducted a records check on him, it unearthed an active arrest warrant for the fatal 2020 crash, signed months earlier. He was charged with vehicular homicide for the hit-and-run and a litany of other charges, including reckless driving, fleeing and eluding a police officer and leaving the scene of an accident. And Monday's arrest wasn't the first time Lumpkin has run into trouble with the law in recent years. At 14 years old, he was charged with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Jakyri Fleurimar. It's unclear how that juvenile case ended. As of Tuesday, he remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

Miami man charged in fuel theft scheme using modified vehicle, MDSO says
A Miami man faces multiple charges in an elaborate fuel theft scheme involving a modified vehicle, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. Orlando Pardo Ortega, 56, used a truck retrofitted with high-capacity fuel bladders to steal hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel from gas stations, which was then resold to commercial trucking operations at below-market rates, according to the arrest report. Organized fuel theft operation MDSO said that on April 25, a detective observed Ortega driving a 2017 white Ram 5500 with an obvious fuel bladder in the truck bed at a Wawa gas station located in the 3300 block of NW 87th Ave. in Doral. The vehicle was seen making two contactless payments via cell phone to pump 110.75 gallons of diesel fuel, exceeding the truck's standard 52-gallon tank capacity. The detective followed Ortega to another Wawa in the 7800 block of West Flagler Street, where he conducted two additional transactions totaling $340.14 for diesel fuel, bringing the total to 218.08 gallons, according to the arrest report. A Wawa senior asset protection advisor confirmed that Ortega used the same credit card, linked to a Hong Kong bank, for purchases totaling $2,689 across multiple Wawa locations. Multiple failed credit card transactions On May 13, Ortega attempted 12 transactions at a RaceTrac located in the 12800 block of SW 152nd Street, all of which were declined, using six different credit cards from various U.S. financial institutions, according to the report. Ortega was taken into custody without incident on June 25 and transported to the MDSO Kendall Station, where he waived his Miranda rights and provided a statement to detectives, the report states. He faces charges of organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, retail fuel theft with a modified vehicle and fraudulent use of a credit card for $100 or more, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office.

Deputy shoots, kills armed man after ‘simple traffic stop' goes wrong, MDSO says
Having illegal tints on his yellow Chevrolet Corvette is what authorities say sparked a chaotic chain of events that led to a Miami-Dade Sheriff's deputy gunning down a man Tuesday afternoon, authorities say. Around 5:15 p.m., MDSO deputies with the Robbery Intervention Detail tried to pull over a man, in his early twenties, in the area of 66th Street and Northwest 22nd Avenue for having dark tints on his car, the sheriff's office said. He sped away, refusing to stop, then a chase began, per deputies. A helicopter overhead helped deputies track down the yellow Corvette to a dead-end in an apartment community in the area of Northwest Fourth Court and Northwest 85th Street, just a mile away from where the pursuit began. After the man hopped of the Corvette armed, deputies say an officer opened fire, striking him. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced the man dead at the scene. No one else was injured. The deputy has been placed on administrative duty, as is the policy of the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. 'At the end of the day, this was a simple traffic stop,' said MDSO Spokesperson Argemis Colome. 'This could have been just a citation, and everyone could have gone home.'

Deputy fatally shoots armed driver after traffic stop in Miami-Dade, MDSO says
A man in his early 20s was fatally shot Tuesday evening by a Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO) deputy after allegedly exiting a vehicle armed during an attempted traffic stop, authorities said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is now leading the investigation, which is standard protocol in police shootings. Traffic stop for tinted windows ends in fatal shooting According to MDSO spokesperson Argemis Colome, the shooting occurred after members of the Robbery Intervention Detail (RID) attempted to stop a yellow Corvette at around 5:15 p.m. near NW 66th Street and NW 22nd Avenue due to illegal window tint. "The vehicle fled the scene, and with the assistance of the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office aviation unit, deputies tracked the Corvette to a dead end near NW 85th Street and NW 4th Court," Colome said. Deputy opens fire after man allegedly exits armed At the dead end, detectives said the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, got out of the Corvette armed. A deputy then fired their service weapon, striking the man. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and declared him dead at the scene. "Unfortunately, he is deceased on scene, but he did come out of that vehicle armed," Argemis said. No deputies were injured during the incident. Colome confirmed a firearm was recovered at the scene. The man who was fatally shot has not been identified.
