Leaker believes 'there's a surprise' with rumored new take on Nvidia's RTX 5090 GPU – but if that's a cheaper price, there'll be a sting in the tail

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Nvidia could have a new spin on its RTX 5090 graphics card This is rumored to be a new version of the RTX 5090 D for China A leaker says it'll pack a 'surprise', but the truth could be more mundane Nvidia is rumored to be planning a new variant on its Blackwell flagship graphics card, potentially an RTX 5090 DD model – and it could come with a 'surprise' according to one leaker. Tom's Hardware flagged up two separate mentions of this potential GPU (add seasoning with all this) on X, the first of which came from MEGAsizeGPU, who mentioned the RTX 5090 DD and how it will be for China only. So, the theory is that this is a follow-up to the RTX 5090 D (single D, not double D) for China, a different spin on the standard Blackwell flagship which was produced for that country to get around US export regulations. Except the goalposts on those restrictions have been moved, and now rule out the RTX 5090 D itself as too powerful (for AI usage) to be shipped to China. It looks like the idea now is to further cut down the graphics card to again make it feasible to supply to Asia, and call it the RTX 5090 DD. The purported cut-down specs were supplied by another regular on the GPU leaking scene on X, Kopite7kimi, as you can see below. The key changes are a slightly lower-tier GPU chip (GB202-240, rather than GB202-250 as seen in the original 5090 D), and the video RAM has been dropped to 24GB with a narrower 384-bit memory bus. That means a 25% hit on the memory bandwidth compared to the RTX 5090 D, but the core count and TDP remain the same (the latter is interesting, and I'll return to why shortly). Tom's Hardware takes it as read that these two rumors are fully aligned – and they are from what we can see spec-wise – but note that Kopite7kimi has a question mark heading up their post on X, which begins: 'RTX 5090 DD?' However, this is likely referring to questioning the name, and whether this will really be called the RTX 5090 DD, rather than doubting whether this is actually a new spin on a China-only graphics card. Although we should never take anything for granted from the rumor mill, and maybe the latter could be the case. At any rate, the most intriguing bit here is Kopite7kimi's mention of a "surprise" from Nvidia with this GPU. When it comes to the name, yes, making it 'DD' sounds rather implausible, but remember – this is the company that brought you the RTX 4070 Ti Super graphics cards (and similarly clunky bouts of unimaginativeness in the past besides). As mentioned, the surprise is what we really want to know about, and Kopite7kimi doesn't elaborate on what that might be with any kind of a vague hint, even. So, we're left to guess on that score. Tom's Hardware theorizes that the surprise could be further cut-backs to the AI powers of the graphics card delivered via the firmware, and that sounds entirely possible. But equally it sounds entirely dull, and the way the leaker teases that "there's a surprise" feels like it's phrased to stoke a bit of excitement here. A minor chop to AI capabilities hardly qualifies in that respect, but what else could Nvidia possibly have up its sleeve here? For me, this hints that Nvidia is planning a move like cutting the price of the RTX 5090 DD. Or perhaps, most excitingly, offering it outside of China, too? Yeah, okay, that seems unlikely (although as noted, with that question mark, it could be that Kopite7kimi isn't fully sure this is the mentioned Chinese variant). Perhaps more realistically, we could be looking at a fair old bump in clock speeds (hence the TDP staying the same, with the spec being cut down in some key areas). Hopefully, we'll find out soon enough what Nvidia might be up to here, if anything, as this could all turn out to be so much smoke from the rumor mill (or plans from Team Green that never come to fruition). AMD looks like it's losing the GPU war based on new Steam survey, with Nvidia's RTX 5060 Ti proving itself to be popular already Rumored Nvidia RTX 5080 Super specs disappoint some gamers, but I don't think there's anything to worry about with this GPU AMD could be working on a faster RX 9070 Extreme graphics card

Nvidia might reveal its most popular GPU in a matter of days

Although Nvidia has recently released a few GPUs that belong on every ranking of the best graphics cards, the launch has been rough all around, with limited stock and high pricing. Hope is on the horizon, though, as a well-known leaker just revealed that Nvidia might be about to unveil three new GPUs: The RTX 5060 Ti 16GB and 8GB as well as the RTX 5060 non-Ti. The scoop comes from MEGAsizeGPU on X (Twitter). According to the leaker, Nvidia will announce the RTX 5060 family of graphics cards in about 10 days. The cards will then land on the shelves around a month later. So far, all of this aligns with previous leaks, so I'm inclined to believe it — but, as always, don't take it at face value. These estimates might still change. Previous leaks indicate that the RTX 5060 will run on the GB206 GPU, but the RTX 5060 Ti is still a bit of an enigma. It could be bumped up to the GB205, but it might also share the same chip as the non-Ti version. However, one thing has been talked about at length: The VRAM capacity, which is why there are three cards included in the announcement and not three. Nvidia is said to, once again, be using 16GB and 8GB variants for the Ti GPU. This didn't work out as well as many had hoped in the RTX 40-series, but the extra bandwidth gained from the switch to GDDR7 might just be enough to make both versions relevant. We'll have to wait and see here. Meanwhile, the RTX 5060 is said to retain the same 8GB memory capacity as its predecessor. That's a shame, as new AAA games often require more than 8GB VRAM to run smoothly at high settings. Historically, the xx60 graphics card has been the most popular one for Nvidia in every generation, topping the Steam Hardware Charts month after month. If Nvidia can provide ample stock for this graphics card, AMD's upcoming RX 9060 XT might have a serious competitor; if not, gamers will remain frustrated just as they've been over the past couple of months.

Finally! RTX 5090 leak points to 'stupidly high' stock coming next month

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. RTX 5090 stock left shelves as soon as it arrived during its launch, with supplies being scooped up by scalpers and prices surging out of control, despite Nvidia stating it will be "shipping more stock." Now, we may not have to wait much longer for more supplies. Known leaker MEGAsizeGPU on X (via Tom's Hardware) claims more RTX 5090 stock is coming in one month with "stupidly high" supplies. Partners, such as MSI, Gigabyte, Zotac and more, are set to get more of Nvidia's latest graphics cards, too. As reported, this is expected to be due to Nvidia's GB200 chips, a supercomputing module made for data centers, not meeting demand expectations. With TSMC's leftovers, GB202 GPU chips will reportedly be repurposed into consumer-grade RTX 50-series chips — most notably, the RTX 5090. If accurate, this is great news for those having no luck finding out where to buy an RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, and worse news for scalpers selling Nvidia's high-end graphics cards for outrageous prices. Recently, we heard retailers could be waiting as long as four months for RTX 5090 GPUs, but now resupplies could be on their way far sooner. Nvidia's latest graphics cards had a rough launch, with virtually no high-powered RTX 50-series GPUs in stock. Still, Nvidia's GB200-series chips were expected to be in high demand, seeing as 90% of the company's revenue comes from these AI-driven chips for data centers. It appears demand must have slipped, hence the GB202 chips reportedly being used for consumer GPUs instead. Whatever the case, here's hoping we'll see more RTX 5090 GPUs arrive as soon as next month. However, will prices still be as high? We've seen RTX 5090 prices soar since launch, and it's not just from scalpers. Right now, as Asus RTX 5090 GPU retails at $3,409, which is a $300 increase in the space of a week compared to when it launch. Even MSI's official store saw a price jump in RTX 5080 graphics cards, with prices now over $100 more. This is despite Nvidia's official pricing, with an RTX 5090 starting at $1,999 (£1,939) and the RTX 5080 priced from $999 (£979). Custom graphics cards from Nvidia's partners are expected to be high, but setting these prices even higher isn't, of course, ideal for consumers. These price hikes are expected to be due to high demand and low stock, but if this leak indicates that there will be "tons" of graphics cards coming soon, will prices stick to what they are now or spike even further? Hopefully the former, at the very least. There are more RTX 50-series GPUs on the way, with Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti GPUs set to arrive on February 20. These graphics cards are also expected to be high in demand, with prices set to start from $749 (£729). Hopefully, these GPUs won't see the same kind of price jump as its higher-end siblings. While we wait for more RTX 5090 stock to arrive, we also have RTX 50-series gaming laptops arriving, with pre-orders up for grabs from February 25. And, if you're looking to build an RTX 5090 gaming PC, we've got you covered. New benchmark shows CPUs are getting slower for the first time in history — what is going on? Nvidia may release the RTX 5070 in March to counter AMD's RDNA 4 GPUs

Nvidia's upcoming RTX 5070 may now be launching in early March, according to industry analyst MEGAsizeGPU (@Zed__Wang on X). Initially expected to debut in February, the source suggests that the mid-range Blackwell GPU has been pushed back—potentially as a strategic move to counter AMD's upcoming Radeon RX 9070. Unveiled at CES 2025, the RTX 5070 is currently the most affordable GPU from the RTX 50-series lineup, at least till the RTX 5060 series goes official. It is powered by the GB205 GPU, featuring 48 Streaming Multiprocessors (SMs), 6,144 CUDA cores, and is equipped with 12GB of GDDR7 memory. The GPU utilizes a 192-bit memory interface, delivering a bandwidth of 672GB/s. Nvidia has set the MSRP at $549, which is $50 less than its predecessor, the RTX 4070. While that may sound lucrative, it is important to consider that board partners will charge a premium over the MSRP and we cannot rule out scalpers and inflated retailer prices out of the picture. Coincidentally, AMD is also expected to introduce its new Radeon 9000 series GPUs including the RX 9070 and the RX 9070 XT. The company is yet to disclose full details of its new RDNA 4 based GPU, but it is rumored to feature 16GB of GDDR6 memory, positioning it as suitable for 4K gaming. In contrast, the RTX 5070's 12GB may face challenges with VRAM-intensive titles at higher resolutions. Although Nvidia is actively developing Neural Texture Compression (NTC) technology to mitigate texture memory demands, widespread adoption remains on the horizon. As per a recent report by IT Home, the RX 9070 XT GPU could potentially arrive with a price tag of $599, which is $150 cheaper than the RTX 5070 Ti. Essentially, the RX 9070 non-XT will be cheaper and may go head-to-head with the RTX 5070. It will be interesting to see if either of the companies tweak their pricing to gain a better positioning in mid-range GPU market. It is important to note that Nvidia hasn't officially confirmed a launch date for the RTX 5070. Nvidia's RTX 5070 graphics card rumoured to be delayed from February until March but that could actually be good news

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Back in early January when Nvidia announced the RTX 5070, the mid-range member of the new RTX 50 family was given a February launch date. Now rumours indicate the GPU has been pushed back to March. Long time GPU-rumour leaker on X, MEGAsizeGPU, says, "the RTX 5070 will be delayed. Instead of February, it will be on the shelf in early March." How much of a delay that would constitute, if true, isn't clear. That's because Nvidia never said anything more specific than "availability in February" for the RTX 5070. As for what's going on exactly, one obvious reason for the delay could be to increase stock level before launch. The RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 sold out almost instantly on launch day on January 30 and have been very scarce since. So, a delay for the RTX 5070 would allow time to build up a bigger buffer of cards. On a related note, Nvidia may have originally been expecting arch rival AMD to roll out its RX 9070 and 9070 XT GPUs a little earlier than March. But AMD has since inked in "early March" as the launch window for those new GPUs, which are expected to go up against the RTX 5070 and perhaps the even the RTX 5070 Ti. We don't know exactly when AMD was first intending to release the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. But the company has revealed that the GPUs have been delayed in order to improve performance and add support for AMD's new FSR 4 upscaling technology to be added to more games. "We are taking a little extra time to optimize the software stack for maximum performance and enable more FSR 4 titles," AMD's Ryzen CPU and Radeon graphics rep David McAfee said on January 22. AMD may also be using the time to build up stock levels. Anyway, the point regarding those AMD GPUs is that their delayed launch has given Nvidia a little time to tweak its own plans with the RTX 5070. Apart from allowing more time to improve stock levels, a delay until March will mean that AMD's GPUs will have to share the limelight and news cycle with the RTX 5070. That said, what Nvidia won't be able to do very easily, at least without losing face, is change the 5070's pricing to respond to AMD. Nvidia has already announced a $549 MSRP for the RTX 5070 and it would be a distinctly uncharacteristic climbdown for Nvidia to lower its price, even if a change to an announced but unreleased GPU wouldn't be totally unprecedented for the company. Nvidia infamously cancelled the RTX 4080 12GB before it was released and rebadged it as the RTX 4070 Ti but with a $100 price cut from $899 to $799. We very much doubt Nvidia will give the RTX 5070 a similar haircut before launch. But it's not absolutely impossible.
