'I had a spoon of Manuka Honey every day to help with hayfever - the results shocked me'
There are claims that Manuka honey and its antimicrobial MGO can help ease the symptoms of hayfever, but does it work? Editor Harriet Morphy-Morris tested it for 11 days A blocked nose, headache and itchy eyes that swell in the morning - like millions of people in the UK - I struggle with these hayfever symptoms in the spring and summer. To see if it was possible to ease my symptoms, I tested out the Manuka honey theory. Dubbed a solution to 'help fight allergies and hay fever', Manuka honey is being explored as a potential relief for symptoms. Although not a straight cure, the natural product is filled with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which are said to help sufferers with their symptoms. But how much relief does it give? Intrigued by the growing attention, I tried it out for myself. Taking a teaspoon of Manuka Doctor MGO honey every morning for 11 days - and I've been left shocked by some of the relief I've felt. Currently offering a discount in its 'summer wellness sale', Manuka Doctor has cut its honey price by as much as 65%. For those like me looking to try and relieve their symptoms this is a chance to get it for less. I tried three different strengths of honey - a simple multifloral of 70 MGO, a premium quality 540 MGO one and a 1000 MGO Max Strength one. On sale as we speak, the 55 MGO honey is reduced from £34 to £11.60. For a max strength and boosted chance to help with symptoms, the higher 640 MGO manuka honey is now £40.60 instead of its usual £116 price. It's not only honey, Manuka Doctor also offers Allergy Relief Supplements for a much cheaper price - £6.30 for 30 capsules. Now, I haven't tried these out for myself, but they could be an alternative for those who don't like the taste of honey but still want the benefits. The honey brand I used: Manuka Doctor Harvested in New Zealand, their bee hives are lab-checked to meet standards and certified for hive-to-home use. The brand is reportedly backed by experts, including health professionals and doctors, including ITV 's Dr Hilary Jones MBE. The key part of this is MGO—or methylglyoxal. Without going into too much scientific waffle, the molecule is vital in helping the body's natural healing process and regulating its immune response. Of course, it's not the only brand around. Holland & Barrett offers 70 MGO honey for £22.49. LookFantastic also offers a 'Manuka Honey Blend' with 30+ MGO for £9.50. Four ways I added Manuka Honey to my daily diet I took a teaspoon of the strongest 1000 MGO honey each morning, this way I kept it consistent and made sure I was having the same strength each day. But I did add in other doses with my meals. My next favourite way of having it was for breakfast, drizzled over a yoghurt bowl or blitzed up in a smoothie. The latter was a simple way to mask the taste for those not keen on the flavour. It was also simple to do during my lunches and dinners. Three or four times, I added a teaspoon of honey to homemade salad dressings. Keen cooks out there could also use it in a meat marinade. One of my favourite dishes was halloumi hot honey, to which I just added some chilli flakes. How long did it take to feel hayfever relief? At time of writing I've been having helpings of Manuka honey for 11 days straight. I started on July 13 and have consistently taken a spoonful of honey each morning (some neat, others added into my breakfast or morning cuppa). By day eight, I could confidently say that I'd felt some relief in my hayfever symptoms, my itchy eyes had reduced, and I was sneezing less. The most improvement, which I started to feel on day three, was with my throat. Dry and inflamed, hay fever has always given me a sore throat, but trialling the manuka honey has definitely helped. As well as the high MGO contents - I think that this is likely down to the simple fact that honey is soothing, and even shop-bought honey is a popular remedy for colds - like hot honey and lemon tea. Is Manuka Honey enough to help ease Hayfever symptoms? After 11 days, I have felt a huge lift in my symptoms. Mainly, the lack of blocked nose, itchy eyes, and sore throat. All of which have nearly disappeared. However, it has not helped the skin symptoms I get with hayfever at all - which is puffiness around the eyes and rash. Another thing I noticed is the taste of stronger MGO honey is so different to the sickly sweet supermarket honey I am used to - the taste took getting used to. This is where I agree that Manuka honey shouldn't be seen as a cure but rather something to try to help ease the symtoms. And going forward I will start taking an antihistamine daily to help - like Allevia which is available at Amazon for £7.59 (please consult with your doctor first).

Vaping giant Juul wins key regulatory battle in US
WELL-KNOWN VAPE brand Juul has been approved for sale in the US three years after being temporarily banned by US health authorities during the Biden administration in 2022. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had originally banned the vapes as Juul did not prove its products would be 'appropriate for the protection of the public health', although this measure was suspended after two weeks to conduct a scientific review. On Thursday, Juul Labs said that the FDA had officially authorised it to market its vaping system and refill capsules. The decision means Juul can continue to sell products that have been on the US market. The well-known e-cigarette brand was available on the Irish market for only two years after being launched in 2019. Juul Labs exited several European markets at the end of 2020. Its products were authorised for sale in the US as the benefits for smoking cessation were 'sufficient to outweigh the risks of the product,' including to anyone not using tobacco products. Advertisement Juul markets its products as providing a public health benefit because they can shift smokers away from cigarettes closely linked to deadly illnesses. But the company has been criticised for its marketing practices, agreeing to pay $438.5m (€375.93m) in a 2022 settlement with 34 US states to resolve accusations of marketing to underage smokers. Juul won the new marketing granting orders (MGO) after submitting more than 110 scientific studies to the agency, it said in a statement. 'Following rigorous evaluation of the data, FDA decided that an MGO for the Juul System was 'appropriate for the protection of public health' – the standard required by statute for authorisation,' Juul said. However, a spokesperson for the US Department of Health and Human Services said its decision 'does not mean these tobacco products are safe, nor are they 'FDA approved''. The Department also indicated it will continue to monitor Juul's compliance with youth marketing restrictions.

New Reports Highlight Path to Net-Zero Windfarm Operations
Offshore charging for both battery-powered crew transfer and service operation vessels could be on the horizon for windfarms of the future, according to two studies commissioned by green energy company ScottishPower Renewables. The two reports – by MJR Power & Automation and Oasis Marine – are the last in a series of three commissioned by ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) to explore options for decarbonising and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from offshore windfarm operations. The studies consolidated initial findings that the electrification of offshore operations was technically feasible using battery-powered Service Operation Vessels (E-SOVs), which stay out at sea for extended periods. They also looked at the potential to decarbonise offshore operations using electric crew transfer vessels (CTVs) that could be used for windfarms located closer to shore, with findings confirming that it is technically and operationally feasible. In both scenarios, windfarms would also benefit environmentally and economically, with a significant reduction in both GHG emissions as well as fuel costs. Ross Ovens, ScottishPower Renewables' Managing Director for Offshore, said: 'These latest studies have the potential to help the industry take a step closer to a new era for offshore windfarm operations – not just here in the UK, but right across the globe. 'The valuable depth and insight this research offers – regardless of whether you're considering an SOV or CTV operating model – could help inform future windfarm operations as the country continues to build the green generation we need to meet the expected doubling of electricity demand. 'Our thanks to MJR Power & Automation and Oasis Marine, who have helped shine a light on the potential to decarbonise marine operations and how that could help support a cleaner, greener and better future.' The MJR study found that electrical solutions are particularly suitable for offshore windfarm operations, due to the possibility of regular charges directly at offshore energy production sites and at shore-based quay sides. It also identified that operations and maintenance electric vessels will become cheaper than their Marine Gas Oil (MGO) alternatives within the next few years, with operating expenses already competitive with MGO-powered equivalents for SOVs, and fully competitive for CTVs in a couple of years. Paul Cairns, Managing Director, MJR Power & Automation said: 'We were delighted to be commissioned by ScottishPower Renewables to support its Operation Zero project, which represents a major step forward in advancing offshore charging solutions. Working with such a forward-thinking team to help shape the future of sustainable offshore operations has been a fantastic experience. At MJR Power & Automation, we're proud to contribute our expertise toward accelerating the industry's journey to net zero and we hope that our findings are helpful to both ScottishPower Renewables and the wider offshore wind sector in its push to further decarbonise.' The Oasis Marine study identified that using electric CTVs, enabled by installing Oasis Power Buoys in the windfarm, provides protection from volatile fossil fuel price and the high costs of alternative green fuels; enabling costs to be predictable and in line with the operator's business model. Its findings were based on the use of three electric CTVs instead of diesel-fuelled vessels at a case study windfarm. The study identified potential savings of 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions and fuel saving costs of around £15 million over the windfarm's anticipated 25-year lifetime. George Smith, Chief Technical Officer of Oasis Marine, said: 'We're pleased to have worked with ScottishPower Renewables to conduct this study into the technical and operational feasibility of installing Oasis Power Buoys as an offshore windfarm charging solution. The study has concluded that the operations and maintenance activities of windfarms can be conducted by electric vessels. This is not only feasible, but can deliver strong environmental and economic benefits. The report summarises and generalises the findings and gives an excellent snapshot of where Oasis Marine's offshore charging technology is today and the potential emission and cost savings it unlocks.' The findings are being shared through the Operation Zero initiative, which was launched at COP26 in Glasgow and brings together developers and supply chain companies committed to making zero-emission operations and maintenance vessels a reality. Leo Hambro from the Operation Zero Steering Committee, added: 'It's great to see developers and the supply chain working together to develop the solutions and best practice that will be a game changer for the industry as a whole. Through studies like these, we will be able to learn, innovate and accelerate the adoption of zero-emission vessels and technologies to achieve a sustainable maritime future.'
