Greenfield mayor receives Housing Hero Award

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Greenfield Mayor Virginia Desorgher was awarded a Housing Hero Award by the Massachusetts Housing Partnership at a ceremony on Thursday. Mayor Desorgher received this award during a ceremony at MHP's Housing Institute conference in Worcester. She was recognized for creating more housing opportunities in the city of Greenfield, using innovative strategies to drive outcomes such as public-private partnerships, flexible zoning, and use of public land for housing. Local fair provides mental health resources and support to youth Deshorger said that the advancements of housing in Greenfield are due to the efforts of many community members, including City Council Vice President John Garrett, who also attended the ceremony. 'When I first took office, housing was one of my most pressing concerns, and it is still today,' Deshorger said. 'None of this happened without the wonderful people of our city that collaborated to help to bring us here.' An ordinance was passed under Deshorger's leadership to lift a 24-unit cap on residential development in downtown Greenfield. The Hope Street parking lot has also been closed to parking and designated for housing development. The space spans an acre wide and serves as an accessible location to nearby restaurants, municipal buildings, and the train station. 'I am beyond thrilled that Greenfield is getting an award for the work that we're doing locally, and especially because it is work that is vital, not just in our city but throughout the entire commonwealth,' Garrett said. 'We didn't build our way into this problem in a minute, so it's not going to be an instant solution, but we've been trying in our small city to find solutions that work for our locality.'
