Over 72,000 houses built under Tamil Nadu scheme to make state 'hut-free'
The Tamil Nadu government on Saturday informed that 72,081 houses have been built under 'hut-free Tamil Nadu by 2030' programme, and the construction of the remaining houses was under progress. During the Budget for 2024-25, the government announced the 'noble goal' of creating a 'hut-free Tamil Nadu' by 2030, and that eight lakh concrete houses would be built in rural areas to replace huts. An assistance of Rs 3,50,000 each was provided to the beneficiaries under the scheme. Nearly Rs 7,000 crore was sanctioned for the construction of two lakh houses in two years (2024-25 and 2025-26). "So far, 72,081 houses have been completed. The construction of the remaining houses is in various stages of progress," the government said in a release here. Provisions have also been made for the needy beneficiaries to receive loan assistance of up to Rs one lakh through banks. On the repair and reconstruction of houses in seven districts affected by cyclone and floods in 2023, the release said Chief Minister M K Stalin has ordered to sanction Rs 168.14 crore to reconstruct 3,591 fully damaged houses at an estimated cost of Rs 4 lakh each and to repair 1,057 partially damaged houses of upto Rs 2 lakh each. Out of a total of 4,648 houses sanctioned, 4,159 houses were completed and the construction of the remaining 489 houses was under progress. "M K Stalin assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021. Various schemes implemented through the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department such as Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, Kalaignarin Kannavu Illam, Namakku Naame Thittam, Sanitation schemes, and drinking water connection schemes have elevated rural areas in Tamil Nadu on par with urban areas, making the state a pioneer for other Indian states," the release said. "It is a well-known fact that Tamil Nadu consistently receives awards from the Union Government and accolades from the media," it added. Following the footsteps of late Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Stalin is implementing various progressive schemes for the advancement of rural areas in Tamil Nadu, including roads, drinking water schemes, housing, and Periyar Ninaivu Samathuvapuram (Periyar Memorial Equality Villages). "These schemes serve as a guide for other Indian states," the release stated and highlighted the numerous schemes. Under the Chief Minister's initiative to improve rural roads in Tamil Nadu (Mudalvarin Grama Saalaigal Membattu Thittam) introduced during 2022-23, Stalin sanctioned the improvement of 20,000 kms of rural roads for Rs 8,000 crore. So far, 9,696 road projects covering a length of 12,572 km have been improved at an estimated cost of Rs 4,609 crore. Further, 6,671 Kilometers of roads are being improved at an estimated cost of Rs 3,529 crore. HR&CE dept schools get an infrastructure boost as CM Stalin unveils new buildings
CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday inaugurated additional classrooms, and other educational infrastructure built at a cost of Rs 13.94 crore, in two schools run by Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department in Kilpauk and Choolaimedu. An official release said Stalin inaugurated a new multi-storey school building for Ekambaranathar Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Kilpauk, built at a cost of Rs 11.15 crore. He also launched the upgraded facilities at Anjugam Primary School, Choolaimedu, at a cost of Rs 2.79 crore. The CM also distributed Rs 10,000 as educational assistance to 252 students of Classes 10 to 12, provided schoolbags with educational materials to 1,131 students, and gave bicycles to 166 students. As a token of appreciation, 10 students each received financial aid and schoolbags, while 40 students received bicycles. He also visited classrooms and laboratories, interacted with students, and observed teaching and practical sessions. Temples under the HR&CE department are not only religious centres but also serve society by running schools, training centres, care homes, and health facilities. Currently, 25 schools and 10 colleges (including a polytechnic) run by temples impart education to 22,455 students. Over the past four years, Rs 138.13 crore has been spent on upgrading educational infrastructure in these institutions. HR and CE Minister PK Sekarbabu, heads of Dharmapuram Adheenam, Kundrakudi Adheenam, Mayilam Bommapuram Adheenam, Sri Embar Jeeyar Mutt of Sriperumbudur, Velakurichi Adheenam, Chenai Mayor R Priyar, MLAs, and senior officials were present on the occasion.

ECI moves to delist 24 inactive political parties in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: Election Commission of India (ECI), through District Electoral Officers (DEOs), will issue notices to 24 registered, unrecognised political parties in Tamil Nadu to show cause why their names should not be delisted since they have not contested in any election for the past six years. When contacted, Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Archana Patnaik said the DEOs have been directed to issue show cause notices to these parties soon. The 24 unrecognised parties include Makkal Neethi Katchi, Tamil Nadu Peasants and Workers Party, and Tamilaga Sthabana Congress. Of the 24 parties, 14 have their 'headquarters in Chennai and among the 14, two parties – All India Women Democratic Freedom Party and Mahabharat Mahajan Sabha – have their office in Kolathur, the Assembly constituency of Chief Minister M K Stalin. Interestingly, the names of two of these parties are: Appamma Makkal Kazhagam (Father-Mother People Kazhagam!) and Anna MGR Jayalalithaa Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which has the names of three past CMs of Tamil Nadu and the names of two Dravidian majors. The ECI on June 26 began proceedings to delist as many as 345 registered, unrecognised political parties which have not contested a single election since 2019. Of the 345 parties, 24 are from Tamil Nadu. The ECI, in its communication to the CEO, pointed out that parties registered under Section 29A of the Representation of People's Act, 1951, are entitled to many benefits – exemption from income tax (Under Section 13A of I-T Act), recognition, common symbol allotment, reserved symbol for parties recognised under Symbols Order and the nomination of star campaigners. The Commission said the reason an association registers as a political party under Section 29A is that it can take part in elections held by the ECI. 'Over time, a large number of political parties have been registered. However, it has come to the notice that many of the Registered Unrecognised Political Parties have not contested even a single election for the last six years since 2019, and many of them have ceased to exist.'
