Yankees' Cody Bellinger makes A's pay for intentionally walking Aaron Judge

He knows why opponents have intentionally walked — and will continue intentionally walking — Aaron Judge in certain spots, even with Judge encountering a rough patch the past two weeks. Advertisement 'Understandable,' Bellinger said. 'I mean, he's the best hitter on the planet.' The A's opted for the same strategy in the third inning Friday with Anthony Volpe on second and first base open, choosing to face the 2019 National League MVP instead of the 2022 and 2024 American League winner — who's also a clear favorite for the award again this year — in the middle of a historic season. And three pitches later, Bellinger delivered again, driving in Volpe with a single to give the Yankees a two-run lead and improving to 3-for-9 with four RBIs in 12 plate appearances following Judge intentional walks. Advertisement 'It's [the] product of a good hitter that's been around, been there and done that and doesn't get overwhelmed or over-amped,' manager Aaron Boone said after the Yankees' 3-0 win to open a series in The Bronx. 'Sometimes, you want to show so bad in those situations. That can get you into some trouble. He seems to manage that really well.' Bellinger, who added another single in the eighth to cap a 2-for-4 night, has produced three singles and a sacrifice fly in those settings this year, and collectively the Yankees have gone 6-for-15 after Judge's MLB-high 18 intentional walks in 2025. Jazz Chisholm Jr., who said he thinks those situations provide 'a lot of added motivation,' has gone 2-for-4 with a homer and a single, while Ben Rice produced an RBI double in one of his two chances. Judge remains on track to shatter the career-high 21 intentional walks he received between the regular season and playoffs last year. So far, though, the Yankees have continued to convert in those scenarios. Advertisement Cody Bellinger rips an RBI single during the third inning of the Yankees' win over the A's. Robert Sabo / New York Post They've strung together run-scoring hits in those spots. Bellinger's single — which continued his in-season turnaround following a slow start, with his average dipping beneath .200 in early May — marked just the latest. 'Especially for me, it's like, feel like that's really disrespectful to walk someone in front of me — with Cody, especially the career that he's had, to walk someone in front of him,' Chisholm said. 'I know it's Judge, but still.'

Red Sox starting P Kutter Crawford needs likely season-ending surgery after undisclosed off-field 'accident'

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford's season is likely over before it started due to an undisclosed off-field "accident" that resulted in a wrist injury. Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced the injury to reporters Wednesday afternoon. Advertisement "Kutter's gonna have wrist surgery," Cora said. ... "It's one of those that — it sucks, right? Because we were talking about how deep we were in spring training and the options we had for the starting rotation. "Now it's getting thinner and thinner." Cora added that the surgery is "most likely" season-ending and that the injury wasn't baseball related. 'I'm not going to go into details, but this was an off-the-field injury,' Cora said, per MassLive. Cora emphasized that the injury wasn't a result of Crawford doing anything "irresponsible." Advertisement 'It's not disappointing. It's just an accident,' Cora said. "It just sucks that it happened this way. I'm not going to get into details, but it wasn't irresponsible.' Crawford was Boston's most durable starter Crawford, 29, is in his fifth MLB season, each of which he's played with the Red Sox. Crawford led the AL with 33 starts last season and led the Red Sox with 183 2/3 innings pitched. He produced a 4.36 ERA and 1.122 WHIP with 175 strikeouts and 55 walks. He also allowed an MLB-high 34 home runs. Crawford has not pitched this season. He started spring training sidelined with tendinosis in his right knee that plagued him throughout the 2024 season and began the season on the 60-day injured list. Advertisement Crawford threw batting-practice sessions in May and was slated for rehab assignments in June in his comeback from his knee injury. But the wrist injury has likely ended his season. Red Sox dealing with multiple pitching injuries The news is a further blow to an already shorthanded Red Sox rotation. Starters Tanner Houck and Hunter Dobbins are both on the 15-day injured list. Both are dealing with elbow strains. Per MassLive, Houck has made two rehab starts at Triple-A Worcester, and Dobbins is scheduled to throw a bullpen session over the upcoming weekend. The Red Sox entered Wednesday on a four-game losing streak in the aftermath of the controversial trade of slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Boston lost two of those games to the Giants with Devers playing for San Francisco. The Red Sox are 40-41 and in fourth place in the AL East, six games behind the first place New York Yankees.

Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll hopes for short IL stint after fastball breaks wrist

June 24 (UPI) -- Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll is hopeful that his current stint on the injured list is of the short-term variety, the All-Star told reporters. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Monday night at a postgame news conference that Carroll sustained a chip fracture in his left wrist. Carroll was hit in the wrist by a 91.4-mph fastball in the eighth inning of a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in Toronto. "I don't have too great of an understanding of what it is," Carroll said. "I know it hurts. Hoping for a shorter term [injured list stint]. I've never experienced a bone break before, so I'm still just gathering information, and [we'll] see where we're at Tuesday." Carroll was at the plate facing a 1-2 count when Blue Jays relief pitcher Justin Bruihl tossed in the sinker. The pitch came high and inside before drilling Carroll's wrist. Carroll immediately let out a scream before walking to first base. He was removed from the game in the middle of the inning and hasn't played since. Initial X-rays did not show a broken bone in the area, but a follow up MRI revealed the extent of the damage. "That's still a little bit confusing to all of us," Lovullo said. "It's on the back of his hand. The impact of the ball hit the side of his hand. Just goes to show you how hard these guys are throwing." Alek Thomas came in to replace Carroll on Wednesday. He played in center field as the Diamondbacks moved Tim Tawa to right field. Thomas and Tawa mostly alternated playing alongside Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Randal Grichuk in the Diamondbacks' outfield since Carroll left the lineup. Carroll hit .255 with 20 home runs, an MLB-high nine triples, 44 RBIs and 10 stolen bases through his first 72 appearances this season. The Diamondbacks (40-38), who won four of their last five games, sit in fourth-place in the National League West, 7.5 games behind the division-leading Los Angeles Dodgers (48-31). They will take on the Chicago White Sox (25-54) at 7:40 p.m. EDT Tuesday in Chicago.

Aaron Judge gets a day off from historic Yankees tear

Try it free KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Aaron Judge nearly homered his way out of his first day off all year. Instead, in Game 67, the best hitter in baseball finally rested. Advertisement Nearly a week ago, Aaron Boone had circled Thursday as a good day to have Judge out of the lineup — or at least the most optimal, since there never is a good day not to have him batting second or third in the lineup. Judge's response was that if he homered in each of the first two games against the Royals, Boone would have to reconsider. Sure enough, Judge went deep Tuesday and again Wednesday for his 25th home run of the year and brought the evidence back to his manager. 'He kind of looked at me, like, 'Hey…' ' Boone said with a grin Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. 'So I was reconsidering. But I think we both wanted to stay disciplined to this one. Right time for it.' Advertisement Judge started the first 67 games of last season before getting his first day off June 10. This year, he started the first 66 before resting June 12, though Boone indicated that was more coincidental than it being some scientific sweet spot for a day off. 3 Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees hits a home run during the seventh inning against the Kansas City Royals on June 11. They have a day game Sunday after a night game Saturday. And the Royals started a pair of lefties in the first two games of this series before right-hander Seth Lugo took the mound Thursday. 'I never want him out of the lineup, but I feel like one of those that hopefully pays some dividends in the long run of keeping him fresh,' Boone said. 'Today seemed like the day that made some sense.' Boone had second thoughts about his decision Wednesday night after Judge crushed another home run — his third straight game with at least one homer, which put him on pace for 61 over the course of a full season — but eventually stuck to his gut. 3 Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge (99) celebrates his home run with teammates. David Smith/CSM/Shutterstock Advertisement The 6-foot-7, 282-pound right fielder started a career-high 158 games last season and remains on track to chase that number this year as long as he stays healthy. The day off allowed an epic start to the season to breathe for the first time. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS Through his first 66 games, Judge was batting .394 with a 1.269 OPS, 25 home runs and 59 RBIs. He had reached base safely in 62 of those 66 games and reached base multiple times in an MLB-high 51 games, just the third player in the modern era to accomplish that, joining Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Judge also is the only player in the modern era to record as many home runs and as high of a batting average as he did through his club's first 66 games of a season. 'It's getting out of hand at this point,' Clarke Schmidt said. 'It feels like every time he goes up there, he's ready to do damage. Obviously, the average is what it is. If it's not a homer, it's probably a hit. It's crazy impressive what he's able to do.' Advertisement 3 Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge (99) catches a fly ball for an out. This season, he entered Thursday leading the American League in batting average by 28 points (over Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson) and RBIs by two (over Red Sox DH Rafael Devers) while trailing Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh by one home run. Advertisement On the whole — adding in his quality defense in right field — his 5.9 fWAR was 1.9 higher than anyone else in the majors (Raleigh at 4.0). 'The most amazing part of it is I feel like he's just playing well — I don't feel like he's been on fire at any point,' Boone said. 'That's what's amazing about it. I think he's just out there playing well. Getting his hits, doing his thing. But in a lot of ways, I'm honestly still waiting for him to catch fire. And then that's when it gets really scary.'

Juan Soto Had 6-Word Pete Alonso Message After Rockies Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The four-time All-Star moved into sole possession of second place on the franchise's all-time home run list on Sunday. Advertisement Alonso went 3-for-6 with two homers and four RBI in the Mets' 13-5 win over the Colorado Rockies, giving him 243 career homers. The slugger helped the Mets reach the NLCS the latter season, slashing .273/.431/.568 with four homers and 10 RBI in the playoffs.
