Trio of Florida softball players to compete in this summer's MLB Home Run Derby X
This year's edition of the MLB Home Run Derby X competition will feature three representatives from the Florida softball program. Catcher Jocelyn Erickson, along with outfielders Taylor Shumaker and Amanda Lorenz, will participate on behalf of the Orange and Blue in the co-ed competition. The format for the MLB Home Run Derby X is based on a 3-on-3 baseball design that focuses on power hitting, athletic catching and defense. Each team consists of two MLB players and a female softball player to complete the triad, while the games are set up to combine "the most exciting elements" of a nine-inning baseball game into a 30-minute format. "This summer, 16 teams will feature across 6 qualifying events in Atlanta, Round Rock, Durham, Oklahoma City, Des Moines, and a sixth venue to be announced," the official website notes. "Winners guarantee their place at the Finals Weekend in Salt Lake City, where the 2025 Derby X champion will be crowned." Erickson will be the first Gator to compete on July 13 in Atlanta, while Lorenz will participate in the Oklahoma City event on August 23 and Shumaker will compete in the Iowa event on August 30 in Des Moines. The competition begins on July 13 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, and the finals are slated to be played from Sept. 19-20 in Salt Lake City. Texas A&M's Mya Perez to star in MLB's Home Run Derby X Showcase
Texas A&M power-hitting ace Mya Perez will be back in action on July 26 when she joins the unique MLB Home Run Derby X. On Saturday afternoon, the Round Rock Express minor league baseball team confirmed Perez's commitment to the event. So, what is MLB Home Run Derby X? Launched in 2022, MLB sought to create an exciting event to attract new fans to the sport, and Home Run Derby X was born. Here's how the league describes it: MLB Home Run Derby X is an electric new baseball format. A 3-on-3 co-ed competition featuring power hitting and athletic catching. Each event features four teams with each team led by an MLB legend. Two semi-finals. One final. Non-stop action. Perez has long been known for her power, even before arriving in Aggieland. She burst onto the scene as a member of the highly touted Athletics Mercado travel softball team. She famously defeated Oklahoma Sooner legend Jocelyn Alo in a friendly home run derby, cementing her prowess in the batter's box. After a challenging freshman year at Texas A&M, Perez returned to the grind in the off-season and emerged as one of the premier hitters in the SEC. During her sophomore campaign, she posted a slash line of .424/.561/.804 with 16 home runs and a school-record 73 RBI. Her standout performance earned her All-SEC First Team honors and consensus All-American Second Team recognition in 2025. Be sure to tune in on July 26 to see Perez showcase her skills in front of a packed crowd.
