Phillies Trade Idea Sends Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford for Twins' Byron Buxton

Phillies Trade Idea Sends Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford for Twins' Byron Buxton originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have had issues in the outfield for a few years. Brandon Marsh has been inconsistent, Johan Rojas isn't a great hitter, and Max Kepler has been a letdown this season. Advertisement With the MLB trade deadline on the horizon, the Phillies could look to make a huge addition in the outfield if the trade idea from ESPN's David Schoenfield were to come true. He proposes that the Phillies send a haul of Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford to the Minnesota Twins for Byron Buxton. Investing in one player is a lot, but Schoenfield explains why such a deal would work. "Philadelphia has a lot riding on 2025 given the age of its lineup," Schoenfield writes, "And executive Dave Dombrowski knows how to go all-in. In this case, it would mean parting with one of the top pitching prospects in the game in Painter, plus a promising young outfield hitting well in Triple-A." While "Trading Painter would be painful," as Schoenfield writes, the Phillies have the pitchers to be okay without him. Zack Wheeler is signed through 2027, while Aaron Nola and Christopher Sanchez are signed through 2030. Advertisement Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton (25) runs the bases on his solo home run in the first inning at Target Kluckhohn-Imagn Images Jesus Luzardo and Ranger Saurez help this year, at the least, and Mick Abel is a potential option down the road as well. Plus, there's always the free agent market or trade block to add a starter when necessary. Buxton, one of the best outfielders this season, would be a perfect addition to bolster the offense and defense for the Phillies. He would be a massive upgrade in the outfield, and he's the righty bat the team is looking for. So far this season, Buxton has 20 home runs and a .270 batting average in 73 games. His .879 OPS would be the highest among Phillies outfields by a wide margin, and he'd be a much-needed power presence in the lineup. Advertisement Kyle Schwarber is the only Phillies player with at least 20 home runs, at 27. Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos are tied for second with just 11 home runs. Adding Buxton's 20 home runs would be a huge help. While Schoenfield has the Phillies giving up a lot, it'd be worth it. Buxton, under team control through 2028, would be the exact addition the team needs to make for a World Series push over the next few seasons. Buxton, being an outfielder, hitting from the right side of the plate, and having incredible power numbers, 'd be a perfect addition for the Phillies. Red Sox Trade Idea Acquires Reds' 3.52 ERA Starter to Bolster Rotation

Red Sox Trade Idea Acquires Reds' 3.52 ERA Starter to Bolster Rotation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox have been teetering on the line between contender and pretender for the last month. While the offense has battled inconsistencies since trading Rafael Devers, it has recently found its footing. The Red Sox have averaged over eight runs per game in the last six games, including a 15-run and 11-run performance during that stretch. As the offense begins to take shape, the pitching staff continues to be a major concern as the trade deadline nears. Advertisement Boston's rotation is still battling through injuries to Tanner Houck and Kutter Crawford, making their depth almost non-existent. Meanwhile, Walker Buehler's 6.45 ERA ranks as the fourth-highest of any pitcher with over 50 innings, according to FanGraphs. Lucas Giolito's last five starts (32.2 innings, 0.83 ERA, and 31 strikeouts) have given Boston renewed confidence in the former first-round pick. Yet, the team still lacks a good enough rotation to make noise in October, let alone get into the playoffs. According to Alex Mayes of Sox Talk, one name worth watching is Cincinnati Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo. Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Lodolo (40) delivers a pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the first inning at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images 'Lodolo, aside from being incredibly fun to say, has been a bright spot in the Reds' starting rotation this season,' Mays wrote. 'He reminds me a lot of a left-handed Lucas Giolito, and their pitch mix is fairly similar as well.' Advertisement Lodolo currently has a 3.52 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 94.2 innings pitched. Although he would not be a top-of-the-rotation acquisition, he would replace Buehler and provide further stability behind ace Garrett Crochet. The Red may be reluctant to trade Lodolo due to only being 1.5 games out of the NL Wild Card race, but if the young team can net a large return, it should not impact their playoff aspirations. Lodolo, with three more years until free agency, will not come cheap for Boston. However, acquiring a controllable, consistent, and higher-upside arm to anchor their rotation should make chief baseball officer Craig Breslow more willing to part ways with a few top prospects. As the Red Sox enter into the final three weeks before the trade deadline, Breslow must decide which direction the team will take: buyers or sellers. Adding Lodolo would not only fill a necessary role this season, but also the foreseeable future. Dodgers Trade Idea Lands Royals All-Star Pitcher Seth Lugo for Pair of Prospects

Dodgers Trade Idea Lands Royals All-Star Pitcher Seth Lugo for Pair of Prospects originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers are, at this point, infamous for having an injured starting rotation. This year, it's more of the same. Roki Sasaki, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow are just a couple of pitchers on the injured list. Advertisement At the 2025 MLB trade deadline, the Dodgers might have to consider adding another starter if more injuries prop up. If they do need to add a starter, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report has a pitcher for the Dodgers to target. He pitched a trade idea that would land the Dodgers' Kansas City Royals starter Seth Lugo, for a prospect haul including Eduardo Quintero and Mike Sirota. The two prospects are ranked 5th and 17th in the Dodgers' farm system. "The Dodgers made a play for arguably the top rental arm on the market last summer when they acquired Jack Flaherty from the Tigers." Reuters wrote. "With the rotation expected to be their biggest focal point once again, Lugo could end up atop their wish list." Lugo is likely to be a top option for any team looking for a starter. If the Royals fall out of contention, Lugo would be highly sought-after. The Royals would be foolish to hold onto him as he's set to be a free agent after 2025. Advertisement Los Angeles Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman before a game against the Chicago Cubs at Dodger Mio-Imagn Images While the two prospects would be a lot to give up for less than half a season of Lugo, in the Dodgers' pursuit of back-to-back World Series titles, Lugo would be a huge help. In 2025, through 15 starts, Lugo has a 2.74 ERA. He also has struck out 76 batters and walked 28 in 88.2 innings pitched. Lugo is coming off an All-Star campaign in 2024 with the Royals, where he was the AL Cy Young runner-up to Tarik Skubal. Over the past two seasons, not many pitchers can stack up to what Lugo has done. With Lugo in the final year of a two-year, $30 million deal, the Royals may be inclined to trade him if the price is right. Advertisement For the Dodgers, this trade idea may cost a lot, but it'd solve their troublesome starting rotation. Whether it's more injuries or setbacks, any bad news in the rotation may lead the Dodgers to add someone like Lugo by the deadline. Detroit battling rivals for All-Star who could shift their playoff push

Detroit battling rivals for All-Star who could shift their playoff push originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tigers know they need bullpen help. That's likely a given before the trade deadline. But if there's a bat out there who fits what this team needs it might just be Eugenio Suarez. Advertisement And Detroit is going to have to fight for him. According to ESPN's David Schoenfield, the Tigers are one of several contenders eyeing a third base upgrade. The Yankees, Cubs and Reds are also in the mix, but Schoenfield suggests the Tigers and Mariners might have the prospect depth to get a deal done. That matters because Suarez won't come cheap. Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio SuárezMatt Kartozian-Imagn Images It's a reunion that makes too much sense. Detroit originally signed Suarez out of Venezuela back in 2008. He debuted with the Tigers six years later, only to be traded to Cincinnati in 2014. Now 33, he's quietly putting together one of the best seasons of his career: 26 home runs, 69 RBIs, a .254 average, and a steady glove at third. Advertisement Plug him into this Tigers lineup and the upside's obvious. Suarez hitting between lefties Kerry Carpenter, once he gets healthy, and Riley Greene gives Detroit a balanced middle of the order. It also lets Zach McKinstry slide back into the utility role where he's most valuable—and protects the team against the possible regression of McKinstry, Javier Baez, Gleyber Torres, and Spencer Torkelson. Of course, there's real competition for Suarez. The Mariners, another of Suarez's old teams, need third base help, too. A reunion would correct what many in Seattle still consider a mistake. But if the Tigers want to stay in the mix and maximize this window, Suarez may be the rare deadline move that shifts the Motor City Tigers into high gear. Advertisement . It's going to take a bold move to land him. Good thing the Tigers have the prospect capital and the history to pull it off. MLB insider suggests Yankees-Cardinals could soon complete Nolan Arenado trade

Given that the St. Louis Cardinals are in contention at the beginning of July, the team may not decide to sell. However, if they can still get off of Nolan Arenado's contract, there's reason to believe that might be smart for them. When examining the situation, Mark Feinsand of discussed what could happen. Advertisement He added that while this was supposed to be a transition year for the Cardinals, and they've been better than expected, there are supposed to be many teams interested in trading for Arenado, as clubs need a third baseman. He added that the New York Yankees are one of them. 'Then again, this was supposed to be a transition year for the Cardinals, but St. Louis has exceeded most expectations with its play during the first half of the season. Might the front office keep the team together -- or even add to it? -- if things keep going well, or would a bad few weeks prompt the Cardinals to become a seller?' 'If it's the latter, there are a number of teams in the market for a third baseman -- namely the Yankees and Tigers. Would the Cardinals move Arenado, and, more importantly, would the eight-time All-Star agree to a trade? Stay tuned,' he wrote. MORE:Cardinals July record will determine potential Ryan Helsley trade Advertisement The Yankees have been linked to Arenado, but it doesn't make much sense from their perspective. Unless they believe Arenado is the perfect fit, finding a cheaper option seems to be the better plan. For the Cardinals, however, they can't worry about that too much. If the Yankees want to send them a decent package for the future Hall of Famer, they should take it.
