Cubs Reportedly Calling Teams to Find Matt Shaw's Replacement Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline

Cubs Reportedly Calling Teams to Find Matt Shaw's Replacement Ahead of MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs are expected to make moves during the deadline, and one of them might be replacing Matt Shaw. When Shaw was demoted to Triple-A a few months ago, the idea was for him to eventually come back and figure things out. Instead, Shaw has struggled drastically, getting just four hits in his last 10 games. Advertisement Holding a .215 batting average, it's tough to continue allowing the 23-year-old to struggle at the level he has. While the Cubs need to give Shaw a real chance to compete at the big league level, Chicago is in a position to win a World Series right now. If the Cubs want to be the team they're looking to be, they can't afford for Shaw to continue giving them what he has, which has quite literally been nothing. However, according to a recent report from Northside Baseball's Matthew Trueblood, the Cubs want to improve their roster and possibly replace him. Trueblood reported that the Cubs have contacted the Athletics and the Minnesota Twins for multiple players. Chicago Cubs second base Matt Shaw (6) celebrates after hitting a two run home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the seventh inning at Chase Scuteri-Imagn Images 'In a survey of their needs and chances to address them, the Cubs have made calls about players who would shore up their weaknesses on the bench and in the infield rotation, sources said this week. Two trade candidates on their radar are third baseman Luis Urías, of the West Sacramento Athletics, and utility man Willi Castro, of the Twins, and the Cubs have touched base with each of those teams this month,' he wrote. Advertisement Willi Castro would be an interesting player to pursue, but he isn't perfect by any means. Throughout the year, he's impressed, hitting .278 with seven home runs. It's been the best season of his career, which is a bit worrisome, but he played at a decent level last season, too, earning an All-Star nod. With a 124 OPS+, there's reason to believe he could be a decent fit in Chicago. He's a second baseman and shortstop, but it's possible that he'd be willing to move over to third base to solve some of the Cubs' issues. White Sox rumors: What Chicago is willing to do to facilitate trades of 2 star

The post White Sox rumors: What Chicago is willing to do to facilitate trades of 2 star appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Chicago White Sox enter Friday's action with the worst record in the American League. That is far from surprising, as they had the worst record in modern MLB history last season. When the trade deadline came around in 2024, they sold off a lot of their pieces, including Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham. This year, the White Sox enter the MLB trade deadline with Luis Robert Jr and Andrew Benintendi as candidates. But Ken Rosenthal reported that the team knows they are going to have to retain salary to make those deals happen. Advertisement 'The Chicago White Sox recognize they are in no position to impose the same conditions on teams that express interest in their two most expensive players, outfielders Andrew Benintendi and Luis Robert Jr,' Rosenthal wrote about the Red Sox mandating the Giants take all of Rafael Devers' contract. 'In both cases, according to sources briefed on the team's plans, the White Sox are open to including cash in trades.' Benintendi has been miserable since signing the biggest contract in White Sox history. In 334 games, he has a 0.1 bWAR, 32 home runs, and 136 RBIs. His OPS is just .693, compared to a .782 mark for the first seven years of his career. The White Sox owe him $17 million this year and next year, and $15 million in 2027. Robert has independent team options in 2026 and 2027, so he could hit free agency as soon as this year. But another dreadful season does not mean great things for Robert's trade candidacy. The White Sox's centerfielder has a .576 OPS this year, but has already stolen 22 bases this year. The White Sox traded Garrett Crochet in the offseason for four of the Red Sox's best prospects. If they can pick up a few more at the MLB trade deadline, the Southside could be set up for a successful rebuild after some dreadful seasons. Red Sox rumors: Craig Breslow ‘loyalist' thinks ‘turncoats are internally plotting' against GM

The post Red Sox rumors: Craig Breslow 'loyalist' thinks 'turncoats are internally plotting' against GM appeared first on ClutchPoints. Even though the MLB trade deadline is still weeks away, the Boston Red Sox might have already dealt the best player of this deadline season. Arguments can be made that the Red Sox or the San Francisco Giants won the Rafael Devers trade. It's still a debate that is raging on. Either way, the deal is still universally regarded as a bad look for Boston chief baseball officer and general manager Craig Breslow. Now, according to reports from ESPN insider Jeff Passan, some of Breslow's front office allies think his role might be threatened by other team employees. Advertisement 'The Devers trade only heightened the palace intrigue,' wrote Passan. 'Front office officials from other teams mostly lauded the deal for Boston, looking at San Francisco's willingness to take on the remaining $254 million over the next eight-plus seasons as a win for the Red Sox. But models exist to strip the emotion out of decision-making and use decades of history — and dozens of other inputs about players' skills gleaned from the cameras that track their every move — to objectively analyze. There is no accounting for a fan base's adoration of a player.' Devers was the franchise player. Plain and simple. Trading your franchise player, especially in the middle of their prime? Usually not a good look at all. Ever since Devers agreed to a ten-year extension worth over $300 million a couple of offseasons ago, he locked in his place as one of the team's leaders. Now, as Boston tries to turn their season around, their best player is gone. As Breslow and manager Alex Cora try to get the club back to October, can they do it without Devers? Can Craig Breslow turn Red Sox after Rafael Devers trade? Mandatory Credit: D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images The package that Breslow and the Red Sox received for Devers was solid. Especially since San Francisco is covering the rest of Devers' contract. That is a lot of money off of Boston's payroll for the next eight and a half seasons. It will also allow Breslow, Cora and the rest of the team brass to chase other upgrades to the roster. Advertisement With top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony at Fenway Park, and staff ace Garrett Crochet putting together a strong debut season in white and red, there are plenty of bright spots in Boston. More contributors, like third baseman Alex Bregman, will return from the IL in the future. Can Breslow take this current team, make a couple of trades, and get them to October? Anything is possible as the All-Star Break approaches. Ryan Helsley Among Four Cardinals Pitchers That Could be Traded

Ryan Helsley Among Four Cardinals Pitchers That Could be Traded originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the MLB trade deadline nearing, pitchers will be a hot commodity for teams looking to improve their postseason chances. The St. Louis Cardinals have an abundance of hurlers that could be dealt. Advertisement ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan recently ranked the top 50 trade deadline candidates around the league. Closer Ryan Helsley was among four St. Louis Cardinals pitchers that could be traded by the July 31 deadline. Helsley was ranked No. 23 on their list, with a 30% chance of being shipped. The best fits are the Dodgers, Phillies, Yankees, Tigers, and Diamondbacks – who the Cardinals could see by their side in the wild card standings as the season continues. His 1.444 WHIP is one of the worst of the Cardinals bullpen, and the worst of his career. As mentioned in the article, hitters have caught up to Helsley's notorious fastball, which he relies on more than any other pitch. Helsley is on contract through the end of this season. With a down year from last year's Trevor Hoffman Award-winning season, it may be time for the club to part ways with their long-time closer. St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Ryan Helsley (56) throws a pitch during the ninth inning against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Blaze-Imagn Images An in-house guy who could move into Helsley's role could be Phil Maton, who has been the most reliable Cardinals reliver to this point. Maton is also listed as a trade candidate in the article, with his $2M contract up after this season. He is sure to be sought after by many contenders, though that includes the Cardinals themselves. Advertisement Erick Fedde was ranked No. 30 on the list. After being picked up by the Cardinals at last year's deadline, he is seen to have a 50% chance of being traded again. "Fedde's strikeout and walk numbers have regressed from his breakout 2024 season (after coming back from a stint in the KBO League), but he's allowing less damage on batted balls to keep himself in the rotation." McDaniel and Passan wrote. With it likely he may walk away in free agency after this season, it may be right to find a replacement for the veteran arm. Steven Matz is the final name on the list. After transitioning from the rotation, he has found more success in his command, limiting his walk rate to a career-best 1.3 per nine innings. He'd be a great fit for a team looking to make a run, but some concern of injury could still linger among the heads of other GMs. The story mentions St. Louis as a fit for pitchers Freddy Peralta, Merrill Kelly, and Reid Detmers. As a team that stands well over .500, the Cardinals could be seen as buyers at the trade deadline, which would limit who is to be dealt. Mets-Phillies Bidding War Predicted Before MLB Trade Deadline

Mets-Phillies Bidding War Predicted Before MLB Trade Deadline originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies are in the midst of a contentious division race as we approach the middle of July. Advertisement How good is this for baseball? Juan Soto and Pete Alonso are leading a Mets renaissance while the Phillies are doing what they always do, though without Bryce Harper this time. Harper has reportedly dealt with that same wrist injury since April of last year, and it comes as the Phillies have lost 11 of 16 dating back to May 25. As the Mets sharpen their knives down the stretch and the Phillies look to fill their many roster holes, one MLB executive gave a very interesting prediction for July's trade deadline. Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper (3) walks towards the dugout after the third out against the Toronto Blue Jays during the fourth inning at Rogers Turchiaro-Imagn Images Longtime general manager Jim Bowden wrote that between now and the July 31 trade deadline, the Mets and Phillies are not only gearing up for an epic division race but also to see who can bolster their bullpen the best. Advertisement "According to industry sources, both organizations are focused on high-leverage arms and will be chasing similar relievers," Bowden wrote. This is a fascinating possibility that's in the same league as the Juan Soto bidding war. Many interesting relievers could be on the market in July, including Rockies standout Seth Halvorsen, Orioles' Felix Bautista, Athletics' Mason Miller, Angels' Kenley Jansen and Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman. Halvorsen is the most interesting possibility; his lightning-quick fastball hasn't yet translated into strong numbers but could easily turn it around with the right coaching. Advertisement Halvorsen's ground-ball percentage, whiff rate and offspeed run value are all elite, according to Baseball Savant. The fates of Bautista, Jansen and Chapman all depend on the mentality of each front office. Bautista, who is under control until 2027, would be among the most lucrative trade pieces if general manager Mike Elias decides to sell at the deadline. Bowden's prediction here leaves so much to the imagination, and it would be an enthralling dynamic to watch the Mets and Phillies fight over some of the top relievers in baseball.
