Brazilian singer and feminist activist Preta Gil dies aged 50
Renowned Brazilian singer and presenter Preta Gil has died of cancer at the age of 50. Daughter of singer and former Brazilian culture minister Gilberto Gil and actress Sandra Gadelha, she had been fighting colorectal cancer since the beginning of 2023. Equally celebrated for her musical talents and campaigning for women's rights and the LGBTQ+ communities, she died in New York on Sunday, according to her spokeswoman, where she was undergoing treatment. "This disc shows my roots, both the tropicalist side of MPB and my open, democratic and connected side," she wrote in her autobiography "Preta Gil: Os primeiros 50" (Preta Gil: The First 50), published in 2024. She also produced three more albums, 'Preta', from 2005, 'Sou Como Sou', from 2012, and 'Todas as Cores', from 2017, with collaborations with Gal Costa, Pabllo Vittar and Marília Mendonça. She released two live albums based on the shows 'Noite Preta', in 2010, and 'Bloco da Preta', in 2014. As an actress, she appeared in soap operas and various Globo projects and created a talk show in 2004. From the 2000s onwards, despite facing criticism for posing naked on the cover of her first album and for being open about her bisexuality, she championed feminist and anti-racist positions. She is survived by a 28-year-old son, Francisco, a member of the Gilsons, and a seven-year-old granddaughter.

Police set to submit result of SAO probe to prosecutors
The result of the police's investigation into the collapse of the State Audit Office (SAO) building will be submitted to prosecutors tomorrow, says the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB). Deputy MPB commissioner, Pol Maj Gen Somkuan Puengsap, said on Sunday investigators have concluded their probe into the tragedy, in which the building on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road in Chatuchak district collapsed after the capital was hit by a major earthquake on March 28. Investigators would hand over 51 boxes containing over 90,000 pages of documents to special prosecutors at Criminal Division 8. They will be asked to consider pressing charges of negligence resulting in harm and/or death against a total of 23 defendants, including the building's designers, contractors and project supervisors, as outlined by sections 227 and 230 of the Criminal Code. The list includes Premchai Karnasuta, former president of Italian-Thai Development PCL, as well as other suspects which have been detained in connection with the case. The second phase of the investigation, which focuses on wrongdoing by officials, is currently underway, he said, adding the result will be submitted to the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). The key concern of this investigation is to determine whether bid rigging led to the use of substandard materials and design flaws. Suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra had earlier pointed to poor design and construction methods as the cause of the collapse; however, Pol Maj Gen Somkuan said police have yet to arrive at that conclusion. That said, he noted, there is sufficient evidence to warrant a probe. Asked if the police plan to issue arrest warrants or summonses relating to the second phase of the investigation any time soon, he said it will depend on the prosecutors' review of the case. He assured investigators are still working to identify everyone responsible for the tragedy.

Senator slams delays in pepper fertiliser aid, urges immediate action from board
Wong stressed that Sarikei is one of Malaysia's main pepper-producing regions. – Photo by Chimon Upon SARIKEI (July 18): Senator Roderick Wong has voiced serious concern over the prolonged delay in the distribution of subsidised fertiliser under the New Pepper Planting Scheme (STLB) and Mature Pepper Planting Scheme (STLM), which continues to affect smallholder pepper farmers, particularly in Sarikei, Bintangor, Julau and Pakan. He noted that despite being well into mid-2025, many registered and eligible farmers have yet to receive any official notification from the Malaysian Pepper Board (MPB) or the appointed suppliers regarding the aid. 'We have received complaints from pepper farmers across Sarikei, Bintangor, Julau and Pakan, stating that they have been waiting for the subsidised fertiliser aid since early this year. 'This situation not only affects crop yield but also dampens farmers' morale,' he told the media yesterday. Wong stressed that Sarikei is one of Malaysia's main pepper-producing regions. He said Sarawak alone accounts for nearly 98 per cent of the country's total pepper production, with over 38,000 pepper farmers in the state – a significant number of whom are based in Sarikei and surrounding areas. According to data from the Ministry of Plantation and Commodities, Malaysia's pepper industry contributed RM186.68 million in export value in 2024 with a total production of 5,753 tonnes, compared to RM149 million from 5,800 tonnes in 2023. 'We are talking about an industry worth nearly RM200 million annually to the country. 'Yet, on the ground, pepper farmers are still struggling with basic issues, such as delays in receiving crucial fertiliser aid, which directly affects the quality of their crops,' said Wong. He believed the delays may stem from weaknesses in supplier management and inadequate monitoring by the MPB. As such, he urged MPB to hold suppliers accountable and ensure that only high-quality fertiliser products are distributed.
