Minneapolis promises crackdown on July 4 fireworks chaos

Minneapolis police leaders are promising stepped-up staffing and a no-nonsense attitude toward anyone using fireworks to "cause chaos" during the July 4 weekend. Why it matters: Over the last three Independence Day holidays, Minneapolis has contended with social media-fueled gatherings of young people shooting fireworks at each other — and occasionally at police officers and other residents. Flashback: MPD has responded with increasing numbers of arrests, Chief Brian O'Hara told reporters. Officers arrested 35 teens and young adults in last year's late-night chaos centered in Dinkytown. No injuries were reported last year, but previous pyrotechnic melées, including around Bde Maka Ska in 2023, left some participants permanently injured. What they're saying:"This behavior will not be tolerated. If you come to Minneapolis with the intent to harm, disrupt or intimidate, you will be arrested," O'Hara said Wednesday. "This year we are even better prepared." Though O'Hara didn't give specifics, he said more MPD officers will be working this weekend than any of the last three years for the holiday and the Taste of Minnesota festival downtown. What we're watching: The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board will again close several parkways and limit vehicle parking around Bde Maka Ska and along the Mississippi River during the holiday weekend. This repeats a tactic that Park Police Chief Jason Ohotto said has been successful in tamping down these gatherings at previous July 4 trouble spots, including the Mill District and Stone Arch Bridge. Zoom out: Beyond fireworks chaos, the Independence Day holiday is a dangerous time for gun violence. In 2023 and 2024, over the week of July 4, MPD was responded to twice the typical number of calls for shootings, gunshots or a person with a gun, city officials said in a press release.

7 Manila cops arrested for robbery-extortion

Seven personnel of the Manila Police District (MPD) were arrested after taking a man into custody under "fabricated" drug charges, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said on Tuesday. In a statement, the NCRPO said the arrested police officers were assigned to Police Station 5's anti-drug unit, including one lieutenant, three staff sergeants, and three patrolmen. 'The arrests were carried out following the swift validation of reports and complaints that exposed the involvement of the said personnel in illegal activities while in the performance of their duties,' the NCRPO said. 'Appropriate charges are now being filed against the individuals involved, who are currently under restrictive custody,' it added. Based on the initial investigation, a 49-year-old man reported that the police officers arrested him under fabricated drug charges on June 20. 'While in custody, the involved officers allegedly extorted P50,000 from the complainant's spouse in exchange for release. Although only P20,000 was eventually paid via mobile transfer, the complainant was freed without charges,' the NCRPO said. According to the NCRPO, the cops allegedly returned the money to dissuade the complainant from pushing his legal action. Recovered from the arrested cops were seven mobile phones used in the alleged extortion, five official police IDs, screenshots of digital transactions and conversations, and remittance records of the extorted amount. The NCRPO said the police officers allegedly committed robbery-extortion, grave threats, arbitrary detention, and violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act as well as obstruction of justice. 'Under the Chief PNP's core leadership pillar on police accountability, there will be no second chances for police scalawags,' NCRPO chief Police Major General Anthony Aberin said. 'NCRPO will not allow these criminals to taint the integrity and dedication of those who are doing good in the service. Rogue policemen will be arrested, detained, charged and remove from the service, based on due process of law,' he added. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

South Memphis climbing gym Memphis Rox to close after shooting kills employee

Memphis Rox, a climbing gym and community center in South Memphis, will be temporarily closed after one of their employees was killed in a shooting on June 29. 'Tonight, we lost one of our most beloved Memphis Rox team members to gun violence,' the gym wrote in a social media post. 'We will close our doors this week, beginning Monday, June 30, as we process our grief.' Officers responded to a shooting inside the gym, located at 879 E. McLemore, at 4:13 p.m. June 29, a spokesperson for the Memphis Police Department said. One man was pronounced dead on the scene and another person was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. A third individual was detained, MPD said. President of Japan military goods distributor, husband accused of possessing 22 fake guns

TOKYO -- A company owner and her husband have been referred to prosecutors for allegedly possessing 22 realistic fake handguns made in Austria, police said. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)'s Nerima Police Station on June 30 sent prosecutors papers accusing the 39-year-old operator of a military goods sales company, her 47-year-old husband who serves as its board member, and their Sakaide, Kagawa Prefecture-based firm of violating the firearms and swords control law. The company's annual sales from the forged guns, which are made of metal and look like real pistols, are believed to have reached 20 million to 25 million yen (approx. $139,000 to $173,000), and the police are investigating how the couple acquired the devices and who bought them. The pair are specifically accused of possessing 22 mock metal guns at their store in Kagawa Prefecture on Oct. 18, 2024. They have apparently admitted to the allegations against them. "I purchased them without sufficiently checking whether they were (realistic) replica guns," the woman was quoted as telling investigators. According to Nerima Police Station, the couple sold the replicas for around 140,000 yen (approx. $970) apiece via the store's online shopping site and at survival game venues where air guns are fired, among other routes. The woman reportedly told investigators, "I'd been selling air guns for 20 years." After receiving tips from a customer in November 2022 saying, "The air gun I bought may be a fake handgun," the police launched an investigation into the case.
