Five compounds issued to businesses in Klang
Tables and chairs obstructing a pedestrian walkway in front of a restaurant at Jalan Bendahara in Klang. Five compounds were issued by Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) to businesses at Jalan Bendahara off Jalan Sungai Jati yesterday. MBDK Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said three were for cleanliness (RM1,000 each) and two (RM250 each) for using back lanes as a kitchen as well as placing tables and chairs on the five-foot way. She said MBDK was acting on complaints from several residents associations and Rukun Tetangga on placement of furniture on walkways hindering pedestrians. 'Complaints were also received from neighbouring businesses,' she said. 'Most of the complaints are about restaurants 'reserving' council parking bays in front and near their premises. 'These business operators also obstruct the five-foot way,' she added. An optical shop owner, who did not want to be named, said that apart from tables and chairs, restaurant operators also placed gas tanks on the road and used the back lanes for cooking and washing. MBDK enforcement personnel checking the back lane where a restaurant has extended its kitchen. Norfiza said 95 operations had been carried out from January to July 22 where 161 eateries were inspected and 155 compounds issued for obstruction of pedestrian walkways and using the back lanes as a kitchen. Among the areas MBDK had carried out operations were Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Pusat Bandar Klang and Bandar Bukit Raja, she said. She added that enforcement was carried out under the Food Establishment Licensing By-Laws (MPK) 2007 which covered aspects such as cleanliness, physical structure of the premises, waste disposal and fire safety. 'MBDK also took action under Section 46(1)(d) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974, which prohibits obstruction in streets or public spaces,' said Norfiza.

No more cafés in Gua Cenderawasih, Perlis says, to protect 480-million-year-old fossil site
KANGAR, June 17 — The Perlis state government has decided to permanently halt operations for the café project within Gua Cenderawasih (Cenderawasih Cave), Bukit Lagi, here, after considering safety aspects and the conservation of the geotourism site. Perlis Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Rural Development Committee chairman Abu Bakar Hamzah said the decision was reached following a site visit and a Scientific Committee Meeting on June 11, in addition to several series of discussions with the Local Authority (PBT), Minerals and Geoscience Department (JMG), university experts, and related agencies. 'The built structures inside the cave will be completely removed to ensure visitor safety and protect its geological heritage value. Construction is only permitted in the area outside this cave, subject to technical approval and compliance with guidelines set by the Kangar Municipal Council (MPK) and JMG,' he told a press conference here today. On May 18, the media reported that JMG had not received any formal application from the operator or the PBT for technical review regarding the development or operational activities of the café inside Gua Cenderawasih. A cafe was in the midst of being built inside Gua Cenderawasih, Perlis which drew visitors as well as backlash. — Picture from Explore Perlis website In the report, JMG also stated that the Bukit Lagi Geosite was formed from Setul Formation limestone, dating back over 480 million years, and was rich in various types of fossils such as nautiloids, gastropods, and brachiopods, while the area also featured unique geological characteristics, including ancient sea notches, small caves, and mushroom-shaped and skull-shaped rock formations. Previously, the media also reported that the proposed café construction had drawn objections from several non-governmental organisations (NGOs) concerned that such action would jeopardise the hundreds of millions of years old geological heritage. Abu Bakar highlighted that the dismantling of the café construction works already done inside the cave would be carried out carefully, using safe methods like water and special brushes, without damaging any fossils or highly valuable structures present in the cave. 'Additionally, tagging will be implemented in identified fossil areas, while detailed mapping will be carried out around the affected geosite,' he said. He added that the café operator's proposal for redevelopment outside the cave could be resubmitted to MPK, but no permanent structures were permitted inside the cave area. Abu Bakar said the Perlis state government would also enhance public awareness through prohibition signboards and involve various parties, including NGOs, schools, and local communities, in preserving Gua Cenderawasih and other geoparks in the state. He also emphasised that the state government did not reject development, but that it should be implemented prudently, considering the sensitivity of the recognised geopark areas. — Bernama

#SHOWBIZ: 'Santan Berlada' actor Khairul Azhar dies at 70
KUALA LUMPUR: Actor, comedian and singer Khairul Azhar, best known for the popular 1980s sitcom Santan Berlada, passed away at his home in Taman Sri Andalas, Klang, at 10.37pm last night. He was 70. It is understood that the deceased was discovered unconscious in his car by his personal assistant. A medical team, contacted thereafter, confirmed Khairul's death. Beyond his acting and hosting career, Khairul was a prominent member of the Santan Berlada trio, alongside the late Ali Mamak and Accapan, with whom he also released a studio album. His passing marks the end of an era, as all three original members of the iconic trio have now departed. News of Khairul's demise was also shared by 1990s singer Anna Zanariah on Facebook, who penned a heartfelt tribute. "In 1997, when I was an artiste, I already knew him. The first time we met was on RTM for the HMI programme. "I was in the singing segment, and he was in the comedy segment. Suddenly, we were able to meet in the same organisation," she wrote. Anna added, "We continued to work together from 2000 to 2001 until he retired. Although retired, his contract was renewed for a few more years because the 'big boss' liked him." "We have so many memories together. He was always a reference point if I got an 'emcee job'. "Safe journey home, brother Khairul Azhar of Santan Berlada, my mentor is no more. "He left on a glorious Friday night. Paying that you'll be in heaven. God willing. April 1, 1955 - May 29, 2025. Al Fatihah," she concluded. Khairul was also known for his musical talent, serving as the drummer for the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) combo. His remains will be laid to rest at the Kampung Raja Uda Islamic Cemetery, Klang, after Friday prayers today. In addition to Santan Berlada, Khairul's extensive career included numerous roles in dramas and telefilms, as well as a memorable appearance in the film Mat Som alongside Imuda.

Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli said the implementation of the smart parking application system in Perlis this year, with a trial period from May to mid-June, is a positive innovation for the state government and will benefit the people. 'The collections from this smart parking system will be returned to the people. I hope that the people of Perlis will accept this reform, as I believe we are not implementing anything that could harm them,' he said, at a press conference after chairing the state executive councillor meeting at the State Legislative Assembly Complex, here, today.

Also present was MPK president Affendi Rajini Kanth. Shukri said the charges for using the smart parking system are minimal, at only 60 sen for the first hour. Parking is also free for the first 15 minutes, he added. He added that the smart parking system would be fully managed by an appointed private company, and the state government is expected to earn more than RM1mil annually through its use. Meanwhile, Affendi noted that, from January until now, MPK had not charged any fees to users for parking, resulting in lost revenue of about RM600,000, before the full implementation of the smart application system in mid-June. – Bernama
