Over 40 staff nurses employed on a contractual basis by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB) at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi have expressed concern over the prolonged delay in sanctioning their pay raise. According to a Government Order with effect from May 1, 2021, the nurses' salaries were increased from ₹14,000 to ₹18,000, with a 5% annual increment applicable from their date of joining until their date of transfer to time scale of pay. While a significant number of nurses have benefited from the increase in the past three years through regularisation, at least 400 continue to wait for their turn throughout the State. 'There are approximately 46 nurses who have not got the proposed salary raise at the MGMGH, despite their long years of service. It has been four years since the 2021 order, but we are being given excuses each time we raise the issue,' V. Sara, a nurse working at the Tiruchi GH, told The Hindu. Ms. Sara, who pursued the matter through a Right to Information (RTI) petition on behalf of affected nurses, presented a request to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on his recent visit to the city. Nurses under government service can earn upwards of ₹30,000 as salaries. 'Though we are working just like the government staff nurses, MRB nurses are still receiving ₹14,000. We get an annual increment of ₹500; those earning ₹18,000 are getting ₹900 as increment. It is unfortunate that such pay disparity exists on different levels within the nursing staff cadre,' said Ms. Sara. Many nurses said that it was hard to make ends meet with the current salary. 'New appointees under the National Health Mission schemes after 2021 are earning more than us. We have appeared for eligibility exams like the others, so why should we be discriminated against?' asked a nurse from Karur Medical College. Nurses who have migrated from rural areas said that their salary could not cover their living expenses. 'I have to pay rent for a room in Jayamkondan, where I work, and support my family in my village, since my husband's agricultural income is not regular,' said Ruth, a nurse with five years of experience. 'The word 'contract' is used in our employment, though it does not specify its time duration or validity. MRB nurses work as hard as their colleagues who are on a regular government pay scale. It is unfair to delay the resolution of their pay raise,' said R.M. Vignesh, State joint secretary, Tamil Nadu Government MRB Nurses Empowerment Association.

Facing huge vacancies across various posts, the Health department is now planning to fill up vacant posts of contract staff nurses through the District Health Society (DHS) on an 11-month contractual appointment basis. However, the Tamil Nadu Nurses Empowerment Association has called this a deviation from existing norms, as contractual posts of nurses were so far filled with nurses recruited through the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB). An official communication referred to the meetings conducted by the Health Secretary with the respective heads of departments to review vacancies in various posts across the health directorates. The huge vacancy position in the post of staff nurse in each directorate was reviewed and concerns were expressed over addressing the issue without delay. Considering the huge number of vacancies in the posts of contract staff nurses, an instruction to explore filling up the posts on a contract basis through the DHS was issued. Temporary/scheme/contract posts of staff nurse, pharmacist, and lab technician grade III on a contract basis should be filled up through the DHS, as is being done for other categories of temporary/scheme/contract posts. District Health Officers (DHO) should take an estimate of all vacancies in the contract post of staff nurse, pharmacist and lab technician grade III sanctioned for National Health Mission (NHM), Tamil Nadu and take immediate steps to fill in a time-bound manner. They were told to strictly follow the contract norms while issuing appointment orders to the selected candidates on a contractual basis - contract appointment is for 11 months only and a declaration that the contractual appointment is purely temporary should be obtained. N. Subin, general secretary, Tamil Nadu Nurses Empowerment Association, said that until now, nurses recruited through the MRB were posted to the NHM's contract posts. 'Nurses, who qualify through MRB, are posted on a contractual basis. As per norms, those not below two years of service are brought to timescale pay as and when vacancies in regular posts arise. Instead of the usual procedure, the Health Department is now going to make contractual appointments for 11 months. There will be no permanency in posts if this materialises,' he said. In a statement issued, the association said there were nearly 4,000 vacant posts of contract nurses, pharmacists and lab technicians across all three directorates. The order issued by NHM, Tamil Nadu to fill these vacancies on an 11-month contractual basis through the DHS would affect the State's health sector. The association said that it is shocking that the department, despite a court order to reinstate nearly 700 nurses who were recruited through MRB for COVID-19, has gone ahead to fill the vacant posts through DHS instead of posting them. They demanded the State government to drop the move and recruit nurses and other staff through the MRB.

Applicants can submit suggestions, if any, at by June 28 up to 11.59 pm. The computer-based test was conducted on June 21, 2025. The recruitment drive aims to fill 14 vacancies. 'For any objections, candidates should give proof from standard Text Books only. Guides/Notes will not be entertained by MRB. The representation in any other form including e-mail, courier, India-post or application in person will not be entertained. KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government has launched the Malaysian Sustainable Natural Rubber (MSNR) Trace system, a digital platform designed to enhance transparency and accountability in the rubber supply chain. The system enables stakeholders to monitor natural rubber transactions from plantations to finished products, addressing environmental and social concerns in the industry. Deputy Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Chan Foong Hin emphasized the system's role in positioning Malaysia as a global leader in sustainable rubber production. 'With technology like MSNR Trace, Malaysia is at the forefront of transforming the rubber industry,' he said during the system's launch. The MSNR Trace integrates existing digital platforms managed by the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB), including PAT-G, RRIM Geo Rubber, RRIMniaga, RRIMestet, and MyLesen. Chan warned that non-compliance with traceability requirements could result in fines up to RM50,000, imprisonment, or license revocation under the Malaysian Rubber Board (Licensing and Permit) Regulations 2014. A major challenge in the rubber sector has been the absence of a full traceability system. The MSNR initiative is expected to strengthen Malaysia's rubber exports, particularly to the EU, which accounted for RM4.91 billion (15.6%) of the country's total rubber and rubber product exports in 2024. The system's enforcement since January 2025 underscores Malaysia's commitment to meeting international sustainability standards. Last December, Malaysia exported its first batch of MSNR-certified rubber—200 tonnes to Slovakia and the Netherlands—marking a milestone in compliance with EU regulations. MRB director-general Datuk Zairossani Mohd Nor highlighted the achievement as proof of Malaysia's credibility in the global rubber trade. 'Traceability, regulatory compliance, and innovation make Malaysia a reliable partner in the rubber industry,' he said.
