MSHP encourages making safety part of your Fourth of July plans

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (News-Press NOW) — The Missouri State Highway Patrol has set its holiday counting period for the Fourth of July. The counting period will begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, and will go through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. Whether planning to visit one of Missouri's recreational opportunities or hosting a backyard barbecue, MSHP urges everyone to make safety a part of their plans and follow all Missouri traffic and boating laws. All available troopers will be patrolling Missouri roadways and waterways to enforce traffic and boating laws, as well as offer assistance as needed. MSHP will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) and Operation Dry Water- which specifically targets impaired vessel operators, throughout the holiday. During the 2024 counting period, 14 people were killed and 560 were injured in Missouri over the Fourth of July holiday in 1,366 crashes. Troopers also arrested 149 people for driving while intoxicated during the 2024 counting period. In 2024, there were also 10 boating crashes, which included seven injuries and no fatalities. No one drowned during the holiday weekend and Troopers made 12 boating while intoxicated arrests. Heading into the holiday weekend, Missouri boaters are asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and swimmers and being courteous on the water. Boaters are asked never to operate a vessel under the influence of alcohol. Boaters also need to be aware that it is illegal to discharge fireworks from a vessel. Fireworks should be left in a safe place on the shore. Boaters are also asked to share the waterway, watch their wake and use common sense, good judgment and courtesy on the water. They are also encouraged to wear life jackets at all times. Anyone needing assistance or who witnesses criminal activity while traveling on Missouri's roadways or waterways should use the MSHP's Emergency Assistance number, 1-800-525-5555 (or *55 on a cellular phone). For road condition reports, travelers can visit the MoDOT website to view their traveler map, download the MoDOT app or call 1-888-275-6636.

12-year-old killed in minibike crash in Raytown, highway patrol says

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 12-year-old was killed Thursday night in a minibike crash in Raytown, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP). The crash was reported just before 8 p.m. The MSHP crash log says the minibike ran off the road and hit a curb before crashing into a building at East 62nd Street and Arlington Avenue. 'In these warmer months, we tend to see a lot of activity with motorcycles, mini-bikes, ATVs, four-wheelers,' said Corporal Justin Ewing. 'We want to remind people: those cannot be operated on the roadways in certain situations. Particularly, you have to have a driver's license and in most of those instances, any of those vehicles that I just mentioned, you have to have a valid driver's license to operate those vehicles, but while you're on the road, you have to follow all the same rules, like speed limit, stop signs.' The 12-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by Raytown Fire Department personnel. 'These incidents are tragic. It tears communities apart when we lose anyone in a crash, let alone a young driver,' Ewing said. 'So, we just want to encourage people, but particularly in these warmer months, and we know these days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are called the 100 deadliest days of summer for our young drivers. Whether it's driving in a vehicle, driving on a motorized scooter, minibike, moped, whatever it may be, have those good conversations about safety, where they should or shouldn't ride these things. We don't want to lose our young folks to tragic circumstances.' Amber Rollins is the Director of Kids and Car Safety. She said they've seen a drastic increase in the number of deaths and injuries when it comes to e-bikes and e-scooters. 'Our recommendation would be that children do not ride them,' Rollins said. 'Period.' She said from 2017-2022, there were about 360,000 emergency room visits nationwide involving E-bikes and e-scooters. 'We're finding that injuries involved in these types of crashes are very similar to those of motor vehicle crashes,' Rollins said. 'So, the speed at which these E-bikes operate is extremely dangerous. They can go up to 30 mph.' This is a developing story. Stay with FOX4 for the latest updates. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Suspect dead, trooper injured after shooting in Saline County

SALINE County, Mo. — A suspect wanted for an out-of-state homicide is dead, and a Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) trooper is recovering after a police chase ended in a shooting east of Kansas City. MSHP said the shooting took place south of Interstate 70 near 115th Road and Belmont Avenue in Sweet Springs, Missouri. The highway patrol reports a suspect is dead and a trooper was shot in his bullet-resistant vest. The trooper was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. MSHP said that at around 6:20 p.m., troopers were notified that the Concordia Police Department was in a chase with the suspect. Police from the department lost sight of the motorcyclist near 120th Road south of I-70 in Saline County. Jackson County to reclassify short-term rentals in new ordinance Around 8 p.m., troopers said they spotted a motorcyclist who matched the description traveling west on 115th Road toward Belmont Avenue. Near the intersection of 115th Road and Belmont Avenue, the motorcycle crashed into a patrol car, and the suspect ran from the scene. A trooper was chasing the suspect when the suspect shot at the trooper, according to MSHP. 'That trooper ultimately returned fire, striking the suspect, and the suspect was pronounced deceased on scene,' said Cpl. Justin Ewing with MSHP Troop A. The trooper had minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital. 'As an agency, today's a day of reflection, but a day of gratitude for us. Last night was a very scary moment. If things had gone differently, we could have been mourning the loss of one of our own troopers today,' Ewing explained. 'So we're thankful that he is at home recovering, and we're thankful that he had his vest on.' Ewing said that the suspect had no known ties to Saline County. 'The suspect was just fleeing from the original area where this homicide occurred. Through investigative techniques, it was learned that his location might be in our area, at which time local law enforcement was able to contact him, which led to the events and how they unfolded last night,' Ewing said. The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Francis Alcantar-Chavez, from Temple, Arizona. He was wanted in connection with a double homicide that happened on June 15 in Taylor, Arizona. 'I will say this is kind of a unique case. This is not a typical case for us. The investigation that this suspect was originally tied to is complex. So with that, we don't want to compromise any sort of investigation that's going on with this outside agency. So we can't really speak too much about where the suspect was wanted from,' Ewing explained. An investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
