Shillong: In a display of regional solidarity and collaboration, CM Conrad K Sangma was felicitated at the State Convention Centre here on Saturday by representatives of the State Olympic Associations of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, extending support to Meghalaya to host the 39th National Games in 2027. Earlier in the day, the first northeast regional meeting of sports ministers, sports secretaries, and state olympic associations was held here to deliberate on the preparations for the 39th National Games. The meeting was chaired by Shakliar Warjri, sports minister of Meghalaya, and co-chaired by Kento Jini, sports minister of Arunachal Pradesh. Meghalaya sports minister called on all northeast states to come forward and be part of the historic National Games to be hosted by Meghalaya, the third state to host the Games in northeast after a gap of 20 years. The first was held in Manipur in 1999, the second in Assam in 2007. "The occasion marked a historic milestone in strengthening inter-state collaboration in sports and reiterated the region's commitment to showcasing its collective potential on the national sporting stage," a statement issued by the office of the North East Sports Association said.

Shillong: As preparations are in full swing for the 39th National Games to be hosted by Meghalaya in 2027, the state govt organised a special event titled 'Grants-in-Aid for Team Preparation' at the state convention centre here on Tuesday. As part of the Team Meghalaya initiative, a total grant of Rs 39,17,64,000 was sanctioned to 26 state sports associations and MSOA to support structured training and preparation. "For the first time in the country's history, a state govt is directly providing grants-in-aid funds to Shillong sports associations," CM Conrad Sangma said. The event is part of a broader effort by the department of sports and youth affairs to bolster Meghalaya's sporting ecosystem through targeted schemes and support mechanisms aimed at motivating and empowering athletes. I can clearly see a huge difference in how sports is growing in our state". The CM also shared plans to work closely with the tourism department to promote home-stays and boutique hotels for hosting athletes, thereby fostering local entrepreneurship and boosting tourism infrastructure. He also pushed for the athletes to target winning at least 50 medals in the 39th National Games.
