UGD, water supply projects unsustaibale without tax, says Coimbatore corporation
Coimbatore: Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran on Friday said the tax demand for underground drainage (UGD) and water supply projects was essential to secure loans from the World Bank and outline future developments. At the council meeting on the day, most of the councillors, including those from the ruling party and the opposition, urged the civic body to cancel the previous resolution revising the deposit and monthly tariff for the UGD and water supply connections. The corporation commissioner, however, told the councillors that the projects were unsustainable without tax demands. "These two projects were implemented by procuring a partial amount as a loan from the World Bank. Maintenance of these projects will require funds. The tariff announced is common for all corporations across the state." Accepting the objections from the councillors, mayor R Ranganayaki said the matter would be discussed at the next council meeting, The AIADMK councillors, meanwhile, opposed the resolution to find contractors to maintain the 16 indoor stadiums in the city and fix a user fee of Rs75 per month. D Ramesh, councillor from ward 90, said, "To date, all these stadiums were maintained by the resident's welfare associations or other welfare boards in the locality. They are in good condition. If these get to the hands of contractors, they will end up like the parks and other infrastructure in the city without much maintenance. " AIADMK councillors R Prabhakaran and Ramesh later staged a walkout, raising slogans against the DMK govt. The mayor subsequently suspended the two AIADMK councillors for the next two council meetings as a disciplinary action.

Coimbatore corporation launches Mission Rabies to wipe out the disease
Coimbatore: A census carried out in 2022 claimed that the city municipal corporation has a population of 1.11 lakh stray dogs. Can all the stray dogs in the city be vaccinated for rabies? The city municipal corporation says that its main objective is to carry out mass vaccination of dogs for rabies through 'Mission Rabies'. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Mission Rabies is a global initiative by Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) focused on eliminating dog-mediated rabies through mass dog vaccination, community education, and rabies surveillance. In India, Mission Rabies has been working since 2013, and Goa has been successfully implementing the project for more than a decade to control rabies. "We used NGOs to conduct the census on the stray dog population in all five zones in the corporation, and the census showed that the city has 1.11 lakh stray dogs. It is a huge population. We have decided to implement the Mission Rabies initiative. We started the initiative at Race Course two months ago. Our aim is to cover all the stray dogs by conducting a mass dog vaccination programme," city corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said. The city corporation plans to launch a hotline exclusively to report rabies-related cases if the public suspects that stray dogs or pet dogs are infected with rabies. Based on the information, mapping will be carried out by a team. "After completing the mass dog vaccination for stray dogs in the five zones of the municipal corporation, we are planning door-to-door vaccination for pet animals, including dogs and cats, to prevent rabies," Sivaguru Prabakaran said. To control the population of stray dogs, the corporation has been implementing sterilisation at the four Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres located at Ukkadam, Ondipudur, Seeranaickenpalayam, and Vellalore. "We believe that through sterilisation, the stray dogs' population can be reduced drastically in the future. So, we are planning to open three more ABC centres in the city," he added. The corporation also claimed that approximately 25,000 stray dogs were sterilised out of 1.11 lakh stray dogs since 2023.

Coimbatore corporation yet to get licence for new bus stand at Ukkadam
Coimbatore: While the city corporation has successfully invited tenders for the construction of a new bus stand at Ukkadam, it is yet to obtain the primary approval and licence for the facility from the regional transport authority. According to an official source, the tenders were floated a week ago and bidding is likely to be held on July 9. The state has sanctioned 23 crore for the project, the work order of which is expected to be issued within 10 days from the date of finalizing the bidder. The Ukkadam bus stand was demolished in 2018 to facilitate flyover work. Spread across 6.5 acres, the new bus stand would have two terminals – one for town buses with 30 bus bays and another for mofussil buses with 28 bus bays. The bus stand would have provisions for restaurants, shops and other facilities. A parking lot, which could accommodate 32 four-wheelers and 100 two-wheelers, is also part of the project. Commenting on the project, city corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said, "Fund has been sanctioned for the project. We will initiate the process to obtain the approval and licence for the bus stand only after finalizing the bidder, who might want to make some changes to the plan design and amenities, which the regional transport authority would scrutinize to grant the approval and licence. It would be more like renewal of the licence obtained for the old bus stand. " Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Siruvani dam seepage rectification awaits approval from Central Water and Power Research Station
Coimbatore corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran inspect Siruvani dam along with Kerala irrigation department officials COIMBATORE: A pressure grouting method suggested to arrest the seepage on the Siruvani dam is awaiting approval of the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Coimbatore corporation officials have said. Siruvani dam, situated in Kerala , is a major source of drinking water for Coimbatore city. Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran inspected the dam along with Kerala irrigation department officials on Thursday. A senior corporation official stated that regular maintenance work, including painting, lubricating the gates and other structural supervision, were being carried out at the dam. "It was a routine joint inspection to check the ongoing work and the water level at the dam. Besides, there were discussions on the progress of curbing the dam seepage. Earlier, the installation of a geomembrane material was suggested. Now it is suggested to go for a pressure grouting method to arrest the seepage. However, final approval from consultant CWPRS is required, and the corporation will be writing, requesting a joint inspection for the approval to proceed with grouting. " The dam's permissible seepage level exceeded over time as the diameter of the holes increased, leading to excess water loss. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? "The dam's water level is almost full due to recent rain, and we are unsure if the technique can be implemented, for which we are requesting final approval from the CWPRS," he said. According to official sources, the Siruvani dam's water level as on Friday was recorded at 38.74 feet against its full capacity of 49.53 feet. As per the dam safety officer's (DSO) instructions, water level is restricted to 44.61 feet. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Siruvani Dam leakage yet to be plugged even as monsoon nears
COIMBATORE: With the southwest monsoon just days away, concerns are mounting over the delay in initiating critical repair works at the Siruvani Dam - one of the primary sources of drinking water for Coimbatore city. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has been waiting for the Kerala Water Resources and Irrigation Department to finalise cost estimates for essential repairs, based on a recent report by dam safety experts. To address increasing seepage from the dam, a joint inspection was conducted on January 8 by five teams comprising officials from the Pune-based Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), CCMC, and the Kerala State Government's Water Resources Department. The teams carried out a detailed assessment of the dam's condition and highlighted urgent structural interventions. The CWPRS team has since submitted a comprehensive report to CCMC Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran, outlining the extent of the damage and suggesting remedial measures to arrest the leakage and improve overall dam safety. The Pune team has suggested two methods - grouting and geo membrane for fixing the issues in the dam. Due to water seepage, around 10 MLD of water is being wasted every single day. This quantity can be used to supply water for three days to residential areas in the city. And once the issues are addressed, around 50 to 55 MLD of water can be saved during the peak summer season which would be of great use for the people.
