KUALA LUMPUR: The 65th International Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA) will welcome 72 participants from 50 countries next month at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL). The event, themed 'Developing a MADANI Ummah,' will be officially opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on August 2. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar confirmed that 40 participants will compete in the Quran Recital category, while 32 will participate in the Quran Memorisation category. The selection process, conducted online from May 19 to 23, was overseen by an experienced judging panel to ensure fairness. Malaysia will be represented by Aiman Ridhwan Mohamad Ramlan (Perak) and Wan Sofea Aini Wan Mohd Zahidi (Terengganu) in the Recital category, and Muhammad Adib Ahmad Rozaini (Perak) and Putri Auni Khadijah Mohd Hanif (Kelantan) in the Memorisation category. A panel of 16 judges from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Indonesia will evaluate participants. Judging criteria for the Recital category include tajwid (pronunciation), tarannum (melody), fasahah (fluency), and vocal quality. The Memorisation category will assess accuracy and fluency. Mohd Na'im highlighted that the theme aligns with Malaysia's vision of fostering a civilised society, emphasising spiritual and moral development alongside infrastructure progress. Malaysia has hosted the MTHQA since 1961, earning recognition such as the Best Quran Programme Award in 2016 from Kuwait. Winners will receive cash prizes of RM40,000 (first place), RM30,000 (second), and RM20,000 (third), along with jewellery from YaPEIM. A special Quran recitation event from KL Sentral to Hatyai aims to set a record for the longest cross-border recitation. - Bernama

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 (Bernama) -- Seventy-two participants from 50 countries are set to take part in the 65th edition of the International Quran Recital and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA) at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) next month. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said that of the total, 40 participants will compete in the Quran Recital category, while 32 others will compete in the Quran Memorisation category. 'The participant screening process was conducted online from May 19 to 23 and was assessed by an experienced panel of judges to ensure fairness and transparency,' he said during the pre-launch ceremony of the MTHQA here today. This year's assembly carries the theme 'Developing a MADANI Ummah', and will be officially opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Aug 2. According to Mohd Na'im, this year's panel of judges will comprise 16 qualified and experienced individuals from various countries, including Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Indonesia, ensuring a fair and transparent judging process. He explained that judging for the Recital category will focus on four core aspects: tajwid (pronunciation accuracy), tarannum (melodic recitation), fasahah (fluency), and vocal quality, while the Memorisation category will be assessed based on memorisation accuracy and fluency. On the selection of the theme, Mohd Na'im said it aligns with Malaysia's vision of developing a highly civilised society, not only in terms of infrastructure and physical development but also in spiritual, intellectual, and moral dimensions. He noted that Malaysia has long been recognised as a leading host of the MTHQA since its inception on March 8, 1961, with one of its notable achievements being the Best Quran Programme Award in 2016 from the Kuwait International Prize for the Holy Quran.

Religious minister: Jais to call two new witnesses in eHati probe tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) will summon two new witnesses tomorrow to record their statements as part of the investigation into the eHati marriage programme, which is alleged to involve immoral activities and the dissemination of questionable beliefs. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, said that the case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995. 'So far, I can confirm that the investigation has begun, and we hope that the witnesses will be present tomorrow,' he said after officiating the pre-launch ceremony of the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), today. Mohd Na'im said that two women, who were the initial witnesses, had previously lodged a complaint with the Jais Research Division. 'However, I was informed by the Enforcement Division that both complainants appeared somewhat hesitant to come forward and provide further information to Jais. I hope this issue can be clarified, so that everyone understands the situation and the truth can be revealed,' he said. 'It is crucial for witnesses to come forward and assist the Jais Enforcement Division in carrying out a professional investigation, to ensure that no party is unfairly treated,' he said. He added that the Jais Enforcement Division is also working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), which will investigate the case from the standpoint of potential civil law offences. In this regard, he urged all parties with relevant information to step forward and fully cooperate with the authorities. 'I sincerely urge all parties involved, or with relevant information, to come forward and assist the Jais Enforcement Division by providing truthful details, so that the matter can be resolved fairly and transparently,' he said. The public was recently taken aback by revelations on social media alleging that the eHati motivational programme, reportedly organised by a married couple, involved immoral activities and the propagation of dubious beliefs. In a recent post on the user's Facebook page, it was claimed that two women had performed a nude dance during a session, held at a convention centre in Shah Alam. It was further alleged that participants were given a liquid of unknown contents that induced emotional changes in a short time and were instructed to undergo 'holy cleansing baths' and 'rebirth' rituals resembling practices from other religions. — Bernama
