Methanol Market worth $55.80 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 4.1%, says MarketsandMarkets™

Delray Beach, FL, July 01, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Global Methanol Market is projected to grow from USD 45.56 billion in 2025 to USD 55.80 billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 4.1% during the forecast period, as per the recent study by MarketsandMarkets™. The increasing requirement of methanol-to-olefins (MTO) and methanol-to-propylene (MTP) processes plays an essential role in the global methanol industry. With these technologies, methanol can become a key feedstock for producing noble petrochemicals like ethylene and propylene, which are used extensively in plastics, packaging, and textiles. China, in particular, has invested heavily in MTO/MTP plants to wean off reliance on traditional naphtha production, securing a stable demand for methanol. The growing acceptance of methanol as an alternative fuel has also supported market growth. Methanol's cleaner combustion properties make it a favorable candidate for mixing with gasoline, marine, and heavy-duty transport fuels, thus allowing industries to comply with increasingly tighter emissions regulations. More and more countries are now looking into methanol-based fuel alternatives to help them transition to low-carbon energy infrastructure. All these factors play an important role in the global demand for methanol. Delhi HC allows 16-year-old rape survivor to terminate 26-week pregnancy

The Delhi high court on Monday allowed a 16-year-old survivor of two separate sexual assaults to terminate her 26-week pregnancy, despite a contrary recommendation from medical experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, abortions are legally permitted up to 20 weeks. (HT Archive) Calling the case 'unfortunate', justice Manoj Jain observed that the pregnancy, a result of sexual assault, had caused the girl 'grave mental injury and serious mental trauma'. 'The physical fitness of the minor is not in doubt, as this has been certified. However, AIIMS has expressed reservations about terminating the pregnancy. That said, it is not difficult for this court to understand the grave mental injury inflicted upon the minor. The situation is unfortunate,' the court said. The girl was allegedly assaulted twice by different men—once during Diwali last year and again in March. She did not reveal either incident until June 21, when a medical consultation with her sister confirmed that she was 26 weeks pregnant. She then informed her parents, following which an FIR of rape was filed. Given that the pregnancy had crossed 24 weeks—the legal threshold for termination in most circumstances—she approached the high court through her mother, seeking permission to terminate it. Under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, abortions are legally permitted up to 20 weeks. Following a 2021 amendment, certain categories of women—including survivors of sexual assault—may terminate pregnancies up to 24 weeks, with medical board approval. The law also permits courts to allow termination beyond 24 weeks in exceptional cases involving foetal abnormalities or serious risks to the woman's mental or physical health. The high court had on June 27 directed AIIMS to examine the minor and submit a report. On Monday, the court noted that while the AIIMS panel found the girl physically fit for the procedure, it advised against termination citing that even though she was physically fit to undergo the abortion, the procedure had the likelihood of adversely affecting her capability of conceiving in the future.. Nevertheless, acknowledging the psychological toll on the minor, the court directed AIIMS to proceed with the termination and asked the Delhi government to bear the costs of the procedure and post-operative care. 'Keeping in mind the overall circumstances and the fact that the minor is a survivor of twin sexual assaults, the petition is disposed of with the following directions: The medical superintendent, AIIMS, shall ensure the termination is carried out without delay, by a team of competent doctors, in line with the MTP Act and related guidelines,' the court said. It also directed that the foetus be preserved for DNA testing and further investigation into sexual assault case.

Abortions in Kerala rise 76% over nine years

KOLLAM: Kerala has recorded an over 76% jump in abortion cases over a nine-year period, given the improved access to reproductive healthcare, according to data with the Health Management Information System (HMIS) portal. The state reported 30,037 abortions in 2023-24, compared to 17,025 in 2014-15, marking a 76.43% increase. In the latest period, 21,282 abortions were conducted in private hospitals, while government hospitals accounted for only 8,755 cases, indicating a growing reliance on private healthcare facilities. The data includes both spontaneous and induced abortions. In 2023-24, the state reported 20,179 induced abortions and 9,858 spontaneous abortions. In 2014-15, abortion procedures were almost evenly split between public and private hospitals, with 8,324 and 8,701 cases respectively. However, since 2015-16, private hospitals have consistently recorded a higher share of cases. From 2015-16 to 2024-25, Kerala reported a total of 1,97,782 abortion cases, of which only 67,004 were in government hospitals. Private hospitals accounted for 1,30,778 cases during this period. The report also noted a steady rise in induced abortions over the period under under review, reflecting better access to reproductive healthcare. Health experts, however, express concern over the increasing dependence on private hospitals and stress the need to strengthen the public health sector. Speaking to TNIE, Dr Leema, senior gynaecologist at the Women and Children Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, said more patients now prefer private institutions due to better facilities and enhanced privacy. 'Medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) is a high-risk procedure,' said Leema. 'It is high time govt invested in better infra' 'Under the MTP (Amendment) Act, 2021, the permissible abortion limit has been extended from 20 to 24 weeks. Most women seeking abortions today are aware of their rights. They trust private hospitals for better operational care, post-procedure support, and, importantly, privacy — something often lacking in government institutions. Women today don't want to take risks with their lives and naturally lean towards private care,' she said. Dr Pandu R, senior gynaecologist at Kannur MCH, said it is high time the government invested in better infrastructure to regain public trust.

Chandigarh: STF orders chargesheet against 2 senior doctors for dip in sex ratio

The special task force (STF) of the Haryana health department, set up to improve the state's sex ratio, on Tuesday decided to chargesheet the former chief medical officer (CMO) of Charkhi Dadri, Dr Rajvinder Malik, for 'persistent non-performance' in duties related to sex ratio monitoring, a government spokesperson said. Directions were also issued for a similar action against Dr M Nehra, officiating SMO of CHC-Gopi, Bhiwani, due to low sex ratio in his jurisdiction. The STF meeting held here focused on intensifying the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao campaign. (HT Photo) The STF meeting held here focused on intensifying the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao campaign and increasing efforts to curb illegal abortions and further improving the state's sex ratio at birth (SRB), which stood at 906 girls per 1,000 males on June 23 against the annual SRB of 910 recorded in December 2024. The STF, headed by additional chief secretary (ACS-Health) Sudhir Rajpal, also directed close monitoring of 'SAHELIs' associated with pregnant women, especially in cases where abortions have been reported. The spokesperson said that the ACS (health) ordered strict surveillance of community health centres (CHCs) and instructed that senior medical officers' (SMOs) accountability be fixed in areas where illegal abortions are being reported. The STF also ordered cancellation of the registration of an AYUSH doctor in Kharkhoda, Sonipat, against whom an FIR has been filed over illegal abortion practices. The ACS (health) further directed that any woman arriving at a hospital with bleeding symptoms must undergo reverse tracking and be tested for consumption of Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) pills. 'If any violation of the law is detected, appropriate legal action must be taken without delay,' Rajpal said. Between June 17 and June 23, at least 28 inspections were carried out across the state to check the illegal sale of MTP kits. One shop was sealed and two FIRs were registered. The number of wholesalers selling MTP kits has come down from 32 to 3, and a significant decline in MTP kit sales was reported in 15 districts. The ACS directed officials to ramp up raids on ultrasound and MTP centres and increase birth registration drives, particularly in Charkhi Dadri district, where targeted interventions are needed. He also emphasised the need to expand the 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' campaign to urban areas. Officials were instructed to identify SAHELIs who have played a key role in ensuring the successful delivery of girl children. These SAHELIs will be incentivised by the respective CMOs to recognise their efforts and encourage greater community participation in this important cause.

Gurugram sex ratio improves after March slump

After a steep decline in the sex ratio earlier this year, Gurugram has shown signs of recovery with the figure crossing the 900 mark for the first time in 2025. According to the district health department, the sex ratio in May stood at 917 girls per 1,000 boys — a marked improvement from 751 in March, which had sparked alarm across the administration, officials said. Gurugram sex ratio improves after March slump Health department officials attributed the turnaround to intensified inspections, legal action, and awareness campaigns aimed at curbing gender-based sex selection. 'The declining sex ratio was a matter of serious concern. We intensified our inspections, especially after the March data. After taking action, the figures rose in April and May,' said Dr Alka Singh, chief medical officer, Gurugram. Official records show the monthly sex ratio for 2025 as follows: January – 877, February – 850, March – 751, April – 907, and May – 917. District authorities cracked down on illegal practices under the PCPNDT (Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques) Act. In one case, an ultrasound technician was arrested in a sting operation for disclosing the sex of a foetus. The centre was sealed, and action was taken against the accused, according to district health officials. Dr Pradeep Kumar, deputy civil surgeon and PCPNDT nodal officer, said, 'We are taking help from decoy patients and using sting operations to catch repeat offenders. Our team conducts surprise inspections and follows up on every complaint.' According to Kumar, licences of 66 ultrasound centres have been suspended or cancelled this year for non-compliance. Eleven raids have been conducted under the MTP (Medical Termination of Pregnancy) Act and two under the PCPNDT Act. To further tighten surveillance, a district-level task force has been constituted under the Deputy Commissioner. It works in coordination with the police, health, and legal departments to monitor ultrasound centres and prevent sex determination. 'We organised awareness camps in areas where the sex ratio had fallen below 750. So far, we have conducted 18 such camps. We also informed the public about a ₹ 1 lakh reward for credible information on illegal sex determination,' said Kumar. Gurugram's annual sex ratio was 899 in 2024, 928 in 2023, 922 in 2022, and a low of 914 in 2021. The figures stood at 917 and 923 in 2020 and 2019, respectively. 'We are hopeful that this trend will continue, but awareness among families and community participation are equally important to bring about the changes,' Kumar added.
