'EC Is Autonomous': Centre On Bihar Voter List Revision, Says Can't Respond On Poll Panel's Behalf

Last Updated: There were repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament as the opposition demanded a discussion on the issue of special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar Amid protests by the opposition against the voter list revision in poll-bound Bihar during the ongoing monsoon session in Parliament, the Centre has said while it is prepared to discuss all issues, when it comes to the Election Commission of India, it is an independent, autonomous body. According to government sources, the Centre cannot answer on behalf of the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Parliament. 'The government is ready to discuss all issues, but when it comes to the Election Commission (EC), it is an independent autonomous body. How can the government answer on behalf of the Election Commission in Parliament? The opposition should understand this," the sources said. There were repeated disruptions in both Houses of Parliament on Wednesday as the opposition demanded a discussion on the issue of special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Rajya Sabha was finally adjourned for the day soon after it met for the post-lunch sitting, while the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the third consecutive day amid noisy protests by the opposition. The Rajya Sabha had its first adjournment after it met at 11 am, and the second one at noon. Both times, it was adjourned after the opposition protested over the Bihar voter list revision issue. When it assembled for the third time at 2 pm, it was adjourned for the day after witnessing similar protests. At 2 pm, Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal moved the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill 2025 for discussion and passing. As AIADMK MP M Thambidurai stood up to speak on the Bill, the opposition members continued their protest demanding discussion on the SIR issue, with some even trooping into the Well of the House, while many others remained on their feet. They raised slogans against the revision exercise, and also demanded that Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge be allowed to speak. Bhubaneswar Kalita, who was in the Chair, told Thambidurai that he can continue his speech later and adjourned the House for the day as the protests continued. Earlier in the day, too, the opposition members created uproar in the House following rejection of their adjournment notices demanding discussion on various issues, including SIR. Soon after the listed papers were tabled, deputy chairman Harivansh said he has received 25 notices under Rule 267 demanding discussion on SIR, demolition of slums in Delhi, alleged discrimination against migrant workers from Bengal in other states, and air safety. The Chair, however, rejected all the adjournment notices, leading to massive protest and sloganeering by the opposition. At noon, Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair, called the Question Hour to be taken up but opposition members were on their feet and demanded that the SIR issue be discussed. Protesting members ignored requests by the Chair to allow the Question Hour to proceed, forcing adjournment. On Tuesday (July 22) also, the Rajya Sabha had witnessed several adjournments, mainly over SIR, and could not conduct any substantial business. WHAT HAPPENED IN THE LOK SABHA? Waving placards and raising slogans, opposition members stormed into the Well of the House during the Question Hour, leading to the adjournment of the proceedings for the day. Earlier the proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm when the protests and sloganeering continued. Opposition members raised slogans like 'SIR wapas lo (Roll back SIR)'. Speaker Om Birla said the protesting MPs were behaving as if they were on the streets and warned that he would be forced to take 'decisive" action against them. 'You should behave in a manner that reflects the hopes and aspirations of the people who have elected you. You should work in a manner and debate and discuss issues that will make people's lives easier. But you have been showing street-like behaviour in Parliament," Birla said. He added: 'The MPs are not supposed to carry placards. If you continue with such acts, I will be forced to take decisive action." The House witnessed repeated adjournments and could not function on the first two days of the monsoon session due to opposition protests over the demand for a discussion on Operation Sindoor and the SIR in Bihar. "We exposed terrorist acts of Pak to the world," All-Party Delegation member Thambidurai says

New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): All-Party Delegation member and AIADMK MP M Thambidurai on Sunday said that the visit of the delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad was a successful one and they exposed the terrorist activities of Pakistan to the world. As the delegation arrived at New Delhi airport, Thambidurai while speaking to ANI, said that all the countries were on Indian side when it came to combating terrorism. 'From AIADMK, I participated in the delegation headed by Ravi Shankar Prasad. We visited France, Italy, Rome, London, Brussels, Denmark, and Germany. We exposed the terrorist activities of Pakistan to the world. Most of the legislators, officials and diaspora were convinced... We got a very good reception. I am very thankful to Prime Minister Modi for this opportunity. Among the various countries, officials and even parliamentarians- all those countries are with India. They are supporting India against terrorism and what happened [in Pahalgam]. Thus it is a successful delegation to European countries,' he said. The Indian Embassy in Germany on Saturday said that the All-Party Parliamentary Delegation concluded its visit to Germany. The delegation successfully conveyed India's firm and principled position against terrorism. In a post on X, the Embassy stated, 'As the All-Party Parliamentary Delegation concluded its visit to Germany, India's firm and principled position against terrorism found resonance across the top political leadership, decision- makers and think-tanks -- reinforcing depth of the India-Germany Strategic Partnership.' The recent visit by the all-party Group-2 delegation, led by BJP MP Prasad, took place amid growing international concern over terror attacks, notably the Pahalgam incident in Jammu and Kashmir, which has drawn widespread condemnation from global partners. During their Europe tour, the delegation held key meetings with government officials, parliamentarians, and think-tanks in countries including Germany. Vice President of Germany's Bundestag, Omid Nouripour, met with All-Party Parliamentary Delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad. He remarked that 'India is the country on earth, for the last decades, which has been most affected by terror attacks... we have to stand at the side of the people in India and help, without any escalation, that the country is kept safe.' All-party delegation member Thambidurai calls Pakistan 'name-sake democracy', lauds PM Modi's tough stand on terrorism

Berlin [Germany], June 7 (ANI): AIADMK MP M Thambidurai, a member of an all-party delegation led by BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad, on Saturday slammed Pakistan, calling it a 'name-sake democracy' and attributing its support for terrorism to repeated military failures. Addressing the Indian Diaspora at a community event in Berlin, the AIADMK MP praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's strong actions against terrorism, noting India's overall democratic development and its stance against terrorism from 'Kashmir to Kanyakumari.' 'Kashmir to Kanyakumari, it is one India... India moved towards development in a democratic way... These are the achievements of India... However, there is no democracy in Pakistan, just a name-sake democracy... They cannot succeed in wars; therefore, they are using terrorism... India and PM Modi have taken strong steps to destroy the terrorist camps and not the civilian people. Therefore, it is our duty to come and speak to the world to get support... India is taking the lead; every country is saying that terrorism has to stop,' Thambidurai said. Congress MP Amar Singh, also part of the delegation, stressed the unity against terrorism. Citing the recent attack in Pahalgam, he said the act was an attempt to divide communities. In a nation, the opposition and the government do not agree with each other. It is a part of democracy. But why did we come together here? Let me tell you, in India, many terrorist attacks have happened till now... The incident of Pahalgam was done to divide the two religions in India. However, after that, all the residents of J&K protested against that incident... The whole of India came together to fight against this incident. So, the political parties also came together... Pahalgam is not the first incident... We are not here to advertise India... We are here to say that it is important to isolate Pakistan on a global level,' Singh stated. Meanwhile, another delegation member and Rajya Sabha MP Ghulam Ali Khatana highlighted Pakistan's destabilisation efforts in Kashmir, the sacrifices made by Kashmiri Pandits and advocated for peaceful neighbourhood growth but firm retaliation against aggression. 'Pakistan wanted to empty the Kashmir that is under their control. We sacrificed a lot. Our Kashmiri Pandits, significant assets of Kashmir, had to leave Kashmir. Pakistan was troubled because of the development in Kashmir. Tourism, G20 events, even yesterday, the Chenab bridge was inaugurated in Kashmir by the PM... We want our neighbours to develop, but if we get a 'goli', we will retaliate with 'gola',' Khatana added. The delegation, led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, also includes BJP MPs Daggubati Purandeswari and Samik Bhattacharya, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, former Union Minister MJ Akbar and former diplomat Pankaj Saran. The delegation arrived in Germany after concluding their visit to Belgium to convey India's resolute and united stand against terrorism. (ANI)
