Condemning Recent Houthi Attacks On MV Magic Seas And MV Eternity C
July 8, 2025 The United States condemns the unprovoked Houthi terror attack on the civilian cargo vessels MV Magic Seas and MV Eternity C in the Red Sea, which resulted in the tragic loss of three mariners, with many others injured and the complete loss of the MV Magic Seas and its cargo. These attacks demonstrate the ongoing threat that Iran-backed Houthi rebels pose to freedom of navigation and to regional economic and maritime security. The United States has been clear: we will continue to take necessary action to protect freedom of navigation and commercial shipping from Houthi terrorist attacks, which must be condemned by all members of the international community.

US condemns Houthi attacks on cargo ships in Red Sea
The United States has condemned a pair of recent Houthi rebel attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea, warning that the escalation by the Iran-backed militants in Yemen risks jeopardizing freedom of navigation and 'maritime security.' 'The United States condemns the unprovoked Houthi terror attack on the civilian cargo vessels MV Magic Seas and MV Eternity C in the Red Sea, which resulted in the tragic loss of three mariners, with many others injured and the complete loss of the MV Magic Seas and its cargo,' State Department spokespersson Tammy Bruce said in a statement on Tuesday. 'These attacks demonstrate the ongoing threat that Iran-backed Houthi rebels pose to freedom of navigation and to regional economic and maritime security,' Bruce added. Houthi rebels attacked a Greek-owned Eternity C bulk carrier on Monday, according to authorities. A search and rescue operation took place overnight, rescuing five crew members as the search continues for others, United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) center, operated by the British military, said in an advisory notice on Monday. The vessel was going toward the Suez Canal. UKMTO said that the ship sustained 'significant damage and has lost all propulsion,' adding it was attacked by 'multiple rocket propelled grenades from small craft.' On Sunday, the Liberian-flagged Magic Seas ship came under fire from the Houthis, with the crew abandoning the vessel, which ended up sinking in the Red Sea. The attacks come roughly five months after the U.S. military began striking the Houthi rebels in Yemen over the group's attacks on vessels passing through the Red Sea. 'The United States has been clear: we will continue to take necessary action to protect freedom of navigation and commercial shipping from Houthi terrorist attacks, which must be condemned by all members of the international community,' Bruce said.

17 Pinoy seafarers to return to PH on July 11
The 17 Filipino seafarers aboard the MV Magic Seas are expected to return to the Philippines on Friday, July 11, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Wednesday night. 'They are due home on the 11th of July. We'll provide further details on this,' DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac said in a press briefing. The rescued seafarers are currently accommodated at a hotel in Djibouti in East Africa. DMW earlier reported that the Filipino seafarers, along with two other crew members, escaped the Liberian-flagged vessel they were boarding, which was under attack by alleged Houthi rebels on Saturday. MV Magic Seas was attacked by men with automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades while it was sailing roughly 51 nautical miles southwest of Hodeidah. Meanwhile, Cacdac also reported on situation of the Greek-operated bulk carrier Eternity C that had 22 members on board — 21 Filipinos and one Russian. Five of the 22 crew members of Greek-operated bulk carrier that was attacked on Monday have been rescued, the DMW reported. Cacdac said DMW has yet to confirm the reported fatalities on the Eternity C, as rescue operations are still ongoing. According to a Reuters report, four seafarers were killed during the attack off Yemen. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

Two crew killed in attack on Greek vessel in Red Sea
Two crew members of the Liberia-flagged, Greek-operated, bulk carrier Eternity C were killed after an attack by sea drones and speedboats off Yemen on Monday evening, Liberia's shipping delegation told a meeting of the UN shipping agency IMO on Tuesday. The deaths, the first since June 2024, bring the total number of seafarers killed in attacks on vessels in the Red Sea to six. Shortly before Monday's attack, Yemen's Houthi group claimed responsibility for a strike on the Liberia-flagged Greek-operated MV Magic Seas bulk carrier on Sunday, saying the ship sank. Two crew wounded, two missing in attack on ship off Yemen; Houthis claim assault on Greek bulk carrier
The ship was adrift, an Aspides official said later, after an attack by sea drones and four speedboats with individuals who launched at least four rocket-propelled grenades. The ship had not requested escort or protection from the naval force, the official said. There was no claim of responsibility for the attack. Earlier, the Houthis claimed responsibility for Sunday's attack on the Greek-operated MV Magic Seas bulk carrier off southwest Yemen. The raid involved gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades from eight skiffs and missiles and four uncrewed surface vessels. The 19 crew members were forced to abandon the Liberian-flagged vessel as it was taking on water. They were picked up by a passing ship and arrived safely in Djibouti, sources said. Houthis said they sunk the vessel. However, Michael Bodouroglou, a representative of Stem Shipping, one of the ship's commercial managers, said there was no independent verification. The crew had reported fires at the vessel's forepeak, in the bow. The engine room and at least two holds were flooded, and there was no electricity. Aspides had earlier warned of a risk of explosion in the ship's vicinity. Since Israel's war in Gaza against the Palestinian militant group Hamas began in October 2023, the Houthis have been attacking Israel and vessels in the Red Sea in what they said are acts of solidarity with the Palestinians. Israel has struck Houthi targets in response, launching strikes on Monday for the first time in nearly a month. A US-Houthi ceasefire deal in May did not include Israel. The latest attacks highlight a growing operational risk to commercial operators whose vessels have called at Israeli ports, said Maritime security firm Diaplous. Magic Seas was carrying iron and fertilisers from China to Turkey, a voyage that appeared low-risk as it had nothing to do with Israel, Bodouroglou said, adding Stem Shipping had received no warning of the attack. The fleet of Allseas Marine, Magic Seas' other commercial manager, had made calls to Israeli ports over the past year, according to analysis by UK-based maritime risk management company Vanguard Tech. 'These factors put the Magic Seas at an extreme risk of being targeted,' said Ellie Shafik, head of intelligence with Vanguard Tech. The manager of Eternity C is also affiliated with vessels that have made calls to Israeli ports, security sources said. John Xylas, chair of the dry bulk shipping association Intercargo, said the crew were 'innocent people, simply doing their jobs, keeping global trade moving'. 'No-one at sea should ever face such violence.'
